I'm bumping this ancient thread to ask what size gauge is recommended? I tried 20g as was recommended in another video, but that leaves too much of a gap in the groove. I measured my bit and it varies between 1.36mm and 1.46mm, but I suppose that's also going to change throughout the life of the bit. According to this chart, that leaves me around a 16g to fill the gap without going too large. But as I'd like to try this with sterling silver, I'd like to ask for someone to help me avoid making an expensive mistake to by checking my analysis, as I'm only stumbling through the problem with common sense and not any experience. Thank you!

Personally I'd test it with copper first. What kind of bit are you using? I use my Inland glass grinder with a horizontal disk for cutting the groove. 20 gauge square wire works perfect for me.

Whoops, missed this comment. Thank you for the response rockbrain . I'm glad you asked the question. I'm using this bit from Gryphon. You prompted me to find an alternative bit with a smaller thickness of 1 mm. According to that chart, the 20 gauge will fit much better in there. Also upgraded to 600 grit for a finer cut. Perfect! Thank you once again.
