Hello, everyone! I was planning to make an obsidian knife a while ago, and asked Tony Catmandewe if he could help me with a big obsidian slab. He gave me a REALLY big slab, very suitable for my project. He also stuffed in that box a gorgeous pictural jasper (rocky butte maybe?) which I'm going to use for the handles. Thank you very much Tony! Here are the slabs: The pics above and below depict the same slab, different faces. The pieces - cut: then rough ground: After that I smoothed the blade: Then I glued the handles with two part epoxy: I kinda brought a shine on the blade... ... but scratches are still there. I will have to remake it. Anyway, the sheen is a nice surprise! Looks cool in some light angles That's all for now, I will post pics of the further progresses. Thanks for looking, Adrian

Uh oh! Been there, done that. shold have polished the fron edges of the handles before glueing. Going to be hard to do now. Also, the sharp bend at the back is going to be HARD to do, also. but you will figure it out. I have seen your other work. When 2 rocks meet at 90*, once you sand and polish one face, the other has scratches from that sanding. You may need to sand it down to about 45*. I have found that tacking the handles together with 2 small drops of glue and then grinding and sandind and polishing all the front edges and then soaking in acetone to remove the glue works best for me. THEN glue the handles to the blade with epoxy and then sanding and polishing the rest. Maybe you can come up with something better. Let me know if you do. Ken

In the words of a famous Knife Lover....Crocodle Dundee... "that's not a Knife...this is a Knife!" I don't know if he was ever a famous knife lover but it sounded good. ;D He may have well been talking about your knife Adrian! I'll bet that is gonna look fantastic when all finished up. Ken has some good points, but I've never tried one so I wouldn't know. I have seen your other work and I'm sure whatever you come up with....it's gonna knock our socks off! ;D Steve

Thank you, all. Steve, Crocodile Dundee is one of my favorite movies, I know that scene ;D Ken, I hope my diamond pads will do the job, if not I will grind the front edges of the handles at an oblique angle. Thank you for the tips, coming from a knife master I'm sure they are efficient. And, talking about knife masters, the credit for the shape of the knife goes to mr Jay Fisher, I was looking for a knife shape suitable for obsidian blade and found this on his web-site: Adrian

I love watching you make things. This one is going to be fun to watch and there is no doubt in my mind that it is going to come out like everything else you make; Superb.

Hi again, I finished it today. The cerium oxide works great for obsidian, indeed. Much more efficient than diamond pads. Here it is: Thank you everyone for looking and special thanks to Tony Catman for the materials. Adrian

Thank you everyone, I'm glad you like it.
Lee, I sand and polish with diamond pads. The flexibility of those diamond pads and of their rubber/velcro support allow to sand and polish also concave areas. To increase the flexibility, sometimes I stick the diamond pads on a smaller support. This way the outer area of the pad is loose and could bend easier. I'm sure there are also dedicated tools for concave surfaces, though.
Now I'm thinkin' on a display support matching with the knife, obsidian is pretty fragile.
