I went out to Prairie Coulees natural area again last weekend. It was cool out, about 50 F, but I was snake nervous for some reason. Normally I don't even think about them when I hike the badlands. But that day I just felt different. About a half hour of hiking nervously checking out every sage brush along the animal trails. I spot an outcrop of the Judith river formation on the side of the coulee. As I'm climbing this was about half way up. Dam think didn't even move a muscle. I noticed its eyes as I was reaching for the next hand hold. First picture is the way I first came into his zone. Even when i was walking around him taking pics he didn't move much. **** No reptiles were harmed or abused on this trip****

He, (she) must not have been to worried about you being there. I noticed that the buzz part never came out to warn you. Glad everthing worked out the way that it did

Maybe it was guarding that pile of rocks. It looks like maybe some interesting stuff in there. a lot of different colors in that pile. It's a rock hound snake.

I do believe I'd be hard pressed to go in that hole after seeing its guardian at the door

I can see why you didn't see that one right away. Blends right in. Do you ever wear snake chaps when hiking around? Steve

Sure makes a certain part of your anatomy pucker when you hear the buzz before you see the snake. Don
