There are a lot of Von Weise gear motors on ebay right now. Do any of your motors have the Von Weise part # on them ?

WOO HOO !! Just found and ordered another one of these. Should be here in about a week. The one I ordered has been completely rebuilt. I have the new bushings to rebuild my old machine, but just haven't had time.

They're a sweet little machine, but they left one thing out when they made them. Since the shafts point uphill, they need grit slingers added to prevent grit and mud from running down into the oilite bronze bushings. On the machine in my pic, the bushings and shafts are badly worn. I've come up with an idea for grit slingers, using the felt washers that fit under spools of thread on a sewing machine.

Well, so much for getting another small sphere machine. Damned seller sold it to someone else after he got my paypal payment. Money has been refunded, but a report was sent to paypal.

No reason why it couldn't be hung upside down. But the way it is, It's a nice portable and easy to store machine. Anyway, I've figured out a way to protect the bushings.

The low point is the bottom corner of the cup. No way grit gets behind that.

Unless you are splashing grit mud on them the slush doesn't run uphill from the bottom corner of the cup to the shaft. At least on any of the machines at school and mine here.
Bushings suck anyways. They most likely wore out from simply wearing out.

I can't believe it's been 3 years since I started this sphere machine project. Anyway, I haven't made a sphere in a long time due to other projects. One of those other projects was getting a super grinder put together so that I can make better sphere preforms. I got 10 7" tile saw blades off of ebay and put them together on my Frantom grinder and was happily grinding off corners and edges from my preforms. Went a lot faster than using my coarse diamond wheel. Here's a picture of some preforms: Here's a picture of some preforms after the super grinder step. You can see the super grinder to the right (not a very good picture). This is an obsidian sphere in the machine and after the coarse grind:

They most likely wore out from simply wearing out. My little machine is at least 35 years old. When I pulled it apart for servicing, I found mud between the bushings and shafts. With the cups aimed uphill, the mud coats the cups, runs down to the shafts and bushings, and wipes out the bushings. With the shafts and cups aimed slightly downhill, there's no way this could happen.

I have one and it works well. Also makes some interesting slab chunks for the tumbler.

Those sphere indexers are pretty neat. Can someone tell me how wide the base is? I'm wondering if it will fit into my 10" slab saw vise.

It nearly fit, but not quite. So I ground some of the threads away from the base where it sits and made it fit. Somewhere in a thread I posted pics and a measurement.
