Happy Camp Idocrase ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/Flipper018.jpg) Australian Opal on a Davis Creek Obsidian cab ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/ObsidianCabs010.jpg) ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/ObsidianCabs008.jpg) This one is carved from Stony Creek Jasper found at Black Butte Reservoir in Northern California. I used a local snail as a model as I was carving. ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/New%20Photos/Race1.jpg) The snail challenged my carving to a race. ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/New%20Photos/Race4.jpg) Sometimes the snail cheated by hitching a ride. ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/New%20Photos/Race3.jpg) The snail gave my carving a kiss for letting it win the race. ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/New%20Photos/Race2.jpg) The carving up close. ![](http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s160/Rocksbob/New%20Photos/Race5.jpg) Bob

Hi Bob, is there anything that you can not do to perfection? Wonderful creations, and yes; I love the photo-series with the snails. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Love the fish one. What kind of stone is that?

The fish was carved from a piece of Idocrase from Happy Camp, California. Sometimes it is referred to as Happy Camp Jade, though it isn't any kind of Jade. This material is also called Vesuvianite ( named after Mt. Vesuvius) or Californite. Bob

All of these are beauties! The real snail's reaction is the best proof you sculpted that snail correctly ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Are the opal elephant and fish simply overlapped on the obsidian, or have you been carving the obsidian to host the opal? Adrian

Adrian, I carved the Opal and mounted them on an Obsidian cab that was made with a flat top to accomodate the flat back on the carvings. Bob

bobby1 I. Love. These! I'm considering getting a Dremel as an entry into carving. I am NOT artistic though so will likely stick to hearts and the like ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Can you tell me what you use to carve?

This member hasn’t been active for over a year. He might still be around or not. Sorry if he's not. I know most use dremels, flexshafts or foredoms with diamond bits/burs. The dremel will be the most cumbersome to use but a good entry. You can alway get a flexshaft attachment for the dremel to make it easier too.
