It's been raining a lot here, so I haven't had a chance to take pics of my bounty. I brought home about 20# from Stillwell plus a 17# yard rock... 43# from Marfa... 28# from WWR. ;D Later, jeri

"... first time work ever saved me lol" Would have liked to meet you too, but it sounds like it was a good thing you weren't on the road! "I am going to try to go in early june" Be careful! The rattlers will be out by then. (I hate snakes!) "where did yall find the best rock?" Trick question. Depends on what you like: Plume/bouquet (Most of the pieces I found would make 1 or 2 cabs)... If Teri Smith of the Antelope Lodge in Alpine is doing rockhound trips to that 'ranch south of Marfa', it's worth the cost. $40/person plus $10 to join a rock club, but you can keep as much as you like! No per pound charge. Red & yellow moss, colorful jaspagate, carnelian, 'biscuits': You can find slabbing sizes of the first 2 at WWR. The second 2 are smaller sizes, but still need to be cut. Oh, Chuck found a huge sagenite at WWR! Red & yellow moss, pet wood, flint, misc. agates & jaspers: Stillwell (the better stuff seemd to be mostly at the tops of the hills). It's a very diverse place! At all 3 places; the bigger pieces are found the farther you walk from the road. Unless the road was recently graded, then look IN the road. lol "did you see any wildlife (4 legged kind)!" Javelina, mule deer, rabbits... "any large agates big enough to slab?" Depends on how you define 'agate'. I have some that are gonna be difficult to cut on my Workforce. Oh and there is that 17# yard rock too. "did yall have a fire ring?" Yep... We camped on a water & electric site near the store at Stillwell... I think some of the primitive sites had them as well... There aren't any fire rings in "The Strip" though... Later, jeri

I'll have to get some pictures up, but it may be a while; our family is going on vacation next week for Spring Break.
Jeri, as you know I've got you beat on pounds of rock! LOL
We collected almost exclusively cutting material and brought home around 300 lbs (perhaps more). We found several rocks in the 10+ pound range at Stillwell. Biscuits and plume are all less than a pound, but should be cut.
The one thing you'll find at Stillwell that I've never found anywhere else is flint with an agate shell. It's really disappointing to find all these nodules that look like they'll be great agates, then you chip one and find a flint center. In fact, the only real agate you find is seam agate, no biscuits or nodules. Of course, as mentioned above, Mark found some beautiful agatized wood.

Yay! You're cabbing again! Those are beauties!
Mark, send me your address. I have a couple of things for you. It will be a couple of weeks before I can get them out, though.
