Whew. It has been over 10 years since my last book was published, in the old-fashioned method of my publisher tells me what to say, I do only the writing, and they provide the editing, photography, type-setting, and publicity, and of course they print it out on the classic dead trees. I had to learn a lot of new techniques for my new ebook. This is a bit of a pet bird specialty item, since it is a roundup of 28 previously published magazine articles, but I learned a lot of skills about formatting, converting, and so on. It's called www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007P5Z1PM/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_img?tag=533643275-20, The 10 Best Things You Can Do For Your Bird, by Elaine Radford, and the title article came from one of the bird owners surveys I did for Bird Talk. Over 200 bird owners participated in the survey, so we got some nifty stories. So...If anybody wants to take a look at the FREE sample and "like" it on Amazon, or heck, even break down and buy a copy, I'd be thrilled. Don't worry. It is NOT a Kindle Select, because I wanted to reserve the right to put it out on ePub for the Nook, which will be happening in a day or three. So you Nook/Adobe Digital Editions people will be able to read it too very soon. Anyhoo...if anybody is interested in this topic, or if you are an ebook writer/publisher on any subject who would like to comment and exchange ideas with me, I'd be thrilled to hear from you. Kind of a long shot from my rock hobby friends, but sometimes active people who create in one area create in others, so I figured I'd toss it out there and see what you folks think. Anyway, the free sample includes at least one whole chapter, maybe two, so enjoy!

I should also mention that if you don't have Kindle, you can download Kindle for PC from Amazon and it's FREE. So you'll be able to read tons and tons of Kindle books, even those pesky Kindle Selects that are only in Kindle format. Also, don't forget your public library can now send Kindle books to you, so you can check out books without ever leaving home. So, even if you have no interest in pet birds, it's a great thing to look into, for the books YOU want to read.

To Ed: in my parish the public library is badly underfunded and now that the libraries are working with Amazon, I can pick up library books on my Kindle, without driving over to the library, that I couldn't always get before. Don't worry. I'm not giving up my personal collection of 3,000 books, but at the end of the day, paper books cost trees and resources, and I'm starting to be convinced that some books (especially how to type books like the one I just published) are better in a nonphysical format....but I will never give up beautiful books as works of art.
To Rockingthenorth, well, I haven't heard back from B&N yet but they say it takes 72 hours. As soon as it's available for Nook and Adobe Digital Reader, I'll post again. I appreciate your kind words.
I can't believe it has been so long since I published a book that "they" actually invented a whole new kind of book, something that happens, what...once in a thousand years? Heh.

Yep you cant stop the future libraries may become virtual but the printed word will take a long time to fade My friend may be a bit of Luddetite on this issue but I understand her cautions A concern I would have is on the classic books Electronic meddling! A hard copy is a hard copy but electronic text could easily be altered I could see that becoming an issue in the future Otherwise I think its fabulous technology can read with out a light on and instant download of text is marvelous I’m going to buy one right after I buy flat lap, a diamond wire saw, vertical belt sander and some more rocks right now though…. I’m going go read the old fashion way I just thought of this old collections of book may increase in value dramatically

Hey! I hope you don't mind but I put your link on my fb page. My friend Pat, who belongs to bird clubs and dog clubs picked up on it and reposted to all of her friends. Hope it takes off for you!

I always had dogs as pets til my wife bought my son a Cockatiel. What a love able little guy. Everybody loves "Henry". If I could only get him to stop crapping on my shoulder...
Good luck with the book! Apple has a cool new ebook publisher program out now that allows you to drag in photos and videos with the text and it makes the formatting simple. Might check that out for a new market.

Thanks, all! I truly appreciate the encouragement.
Cathy, since I'm not on Facebook, I'm really grateful that you did that. That's a wonderful help! Anyone who wants to link me, like me, whatever...feel free. Also, if there is anyone out there who has a review blog for pets, pet birds, parrots. etc, and you want a free copy to review, then please leave me a message. I've squinted my eyes at the Amazon contract, and it seems to be OK for me to distribute some free review copies.
Jim, right now the support on Amazon's Kindle for formatting photos and videos is not where I would like it to be -- Kindle has a reputation of losing your great formatting for tables, photos etc. So I'm avoiding that stuff for my first few efforts. But I'll keep your suggestion in mind, for when I get more photo intensive. This first book, it's a reprint book where I owned the rights to the writing, but not to the photographs, which were taken by dozens of different people over the years. So I just used one of my own photographs for the cover and went with a text-based book. I have a lot of experience writing in simple HMTL so for this book all I had to do was use Guido Henkel's "Take Pride in Your EBook Formatting" to step up to very basic CSS and then use the Calibre conversion program. The book looks beautiful on Kindle and Kindle for PC. I'm a little annoyed with Amazon that they dropped the proper formatting for the un-ordered list in their free sample program. Argh. The free sample should look as beautiful as the real thing. But I suppose that's a quibble. For that matter, the book looks great in ePub on my end, so I'm itching and twitching to see when PuBit/Barnes & Noble posts the beast.

Oh, to Ed-- about the value of old collections of books. I'm seeing it go the other way. The price of most of my used books has absolutely cratered. It's scary. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule, where people are asking hundreds of dollars for a single book. There's a million dollar comic book out there. But for most books, go to Amazon right now, and start inputting ISBNs to see the value of your book. Most of 'em are posted by somebody for a penny. Scary, scary stuff. This year, I've sold two used books, for $14 a pop. That's it. The rest of them, I log 'em in and check the price and then there's no use in posting them, because I would lose money to sell them. I don't have to MAKE money on a used book, but since I'm not working right now, I can't LOSE money getting it into the right hands.
We live in a fragile world. If you have to evacuate quickly for a flood, if your house is picked up by tornado, whatever...you lose all those physical books. But your books in the "cloud" will always be there for you. So there's a huge argument to be made for the virtual product. I can't evacuate with 3000 books. My birds go first, some of my smallest and most valuable spheres or other gems, and then finally a few of the most costly bird field guides.

Congratulations! I also shared it on my FB. I think you jumped an era of book publishing between your new ebook and your last tree book!
