Alright folks, here's the KCC for August 2012!
Rules:
Entries do not have to be started within the time frame of the contest, only finished by the deadline. All entires still require a photo of the slab, preform and finished cab.
Remember, entries submitted to this contest must be unique to the RTH version of the Killer Cab Contest. I will monitor the other forum(s) for duplicate entries, and any duplicates will be disqualified.
Entries are cabs only. Completed during this monthly contest period. Not cabs pulled from the drawer.
We include a pic of the original slab, then a pic of the preform, and finally, the finished cab.
Please try to remember at least a pic or two of the original slab and or preform.
Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the mineral, and or what ever else you would like to share.
You can enter any shape cab and your choice of mineral.
Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs can not be entered in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs.
Cabs posted here are only for the contest.
Now get cabbing!

Nice! Very interesting material, too.
I am going to submit this month. I am only saying this here because having publicly said it, I won't chicken out- I'm committed. (and nervous)

Thanks Tela. Blue-G is an interesting material. The material in the rough made me worry that polishing compound would get caught in the little lines and seams created by the crystal growth in the material, but it didn't seem to be a problem in the end. the finish is a little textured due to the variety of minerals in the stone. The tan/yellow/black color seems to undercut a bit and doesn't polish as well as the blue areas. The stone as a whole does start taking a nice polish at around 600 grit. I suspect that I could get a higher shine if I worked the material through higher grits past 1200, but again with the texture, I don't think a smooth glass finish is possible, at least with this sample.

Cool cabs!
that BlueG does not like getting polished with water based methods as it does undercut, the diamond compound does much better!

Ok I'm in, I have only cut 2 cabs for the month and my daughter snapped this one up strait away . Its a piece of Andamooka opal that I got from an old fellow a couple of years back, as is often the way I had to make a compromise with a pesty sand spot , that wouldn't go away without distorting the shape too much.Thats it 2nd pic top left I hope you like it, not the sand spot but the opal the piece The cab, sorry the preform pics were pretty crusty Bill

No Lies ;D Seeing how I had such a memorable experience the last time I entered the contest I thought that I would do it again. I hope to be able to push everyone's button this time and excite everyone with this entry. I took a lot of photos. I have some hand shots for those who have a thing for hands , I have some out door shots in natural light with some reflection that is sure to blind you so be warned LOL I have a killer back lit shot at sunset that I took using a technique called fill flash so as to preserve the flesh tones of the hand, I wouldn't want anyone to think that those magnificent colors were juiced up. Oh and of course a couple of shots in the light box on a black background. This time for your viewing pleasure I am entering a beautiful piece of Agua Nueva with a nice druzy. I got the slab from West Coast Mining on Ebay and so far I am very pleased with the quality of their material this being the second slab that I have worked from the purchase that I recently made from them. So now on with the show THE SLAB: THE PREFORM: THE CAB NATURAL LIGHT WHITE BACKGROUND OUT DOOR BLINDING REFLECTION SHOT LOL AS PROMISED FOR THOSE INTO HAND SHOTS FINALLY BACK LIT HAND HELD AT SUNSET WITH FILL FLASH TO MAINTAIN SKIN TONE A COUPLE IN THE LIGHT BOX FOR COMPARISON I hope you all enjoyed the show and tanks for lookin Stu

Very nice Stu. Good choice on where you cut the cab from the slab, and a great choice of material and vendor. West Coast Mining is a class act, Dale and Linda are the best.

Well Stu since you want to make such a big deal out of it (but I can not because I will get kicked off) I am just going to throw up the hands that you swear are the hands of a 15 year old boy and just let everyone compare. NOW REMEMBER, YOU STARTED THIS, NOT ME. jIM

Jim I have no idea what you are talking about or what your problem is. Perhaps you have a thing for young boys. To each his own. However you should really keep the posts on this thread pertinent to the contest. So what do you think of my Agua Nueva cab? Do you like it? If so I would appreciate your vote, though for some reason I don't really see that happening. The elaboration about hand shots in my post had nothing to do with you. My mention and inclusion of the hand shots was done to simply assuage anyone's concerns that the pictures in my entry might have been enhanced through photo editing. So Jim why don't you just try to enjoy the forum and stop trying to start trouble. Stu
