Once spammers, 5 minute cabs, etc. get a lot more attention . . . Hmmm? Five-minute cabbers? A rare breed indeed. Can’t say I’ve met any around here. I'm not at all interested in carving so I guess I'm one of the reason's you're leaving. Hate to see you go but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. And yes, I think the 5 minute cab thing was a slap in the face to about 90% of the people here. Maybe it was intentional, maybe not. Best to you my friend! Curt

This is a sad thread, but in the light shed by kk's post, an inevitable one. It brings to mind the reasons we have for posting, and why we continue to post. Is our motivation to share, inform, amuse & educate ... Or simply to get attention and praise, or make a profit? The question of motivations is a complex one, with complex answers. What's my answer to the question??? ... All of the above. More than anything, though, it's the sense of community, the gathering of voices that keeps me here. It's sad to see anyone leave because they're not being given enough attention, but perhaps it's best for them to seek more active ways of fulfilling that need. Best wishes to kk in that endeavor. Hope you leave the old content up as I need something to go back and look at when I do give it a try. You're too late on that one Tony, he's deleted the pics on the other threads. That'll teach us to start replying. Thats a real shame that he did that. As I mentioned to him in a PM I was just getting ready to buy my Foredom to start at carving. I was really looking forward to his input. As one whom I considered to have been a highly respected member to have removed all of his pictures does not seem like the right way to have left. As far as the 5 minute cabbers I would like to know who here can turn out a quality cab in 5 minutes. It can take me an hour to just frame out a scene to cut a preform. I don't think I have yet to do a cab that took less than 2 hours from start to finish

Since my skills have not advanced to carving level I haven't really had much to contribute to this section. You, Jim and others have inspired me to the point of purchasing carving rasps, but so far life has not allowed it to progress beyond that.
And yes, there are 5 minute cabbers. The guy who sold me my first saw and old FranTom combo machine gave me my first cabbing lesson, took about 5 minutes from preform to finished cab, and it was a very nice cab. Still takes me from 30 minutes to several hours to make one and most are not competition quality, but thanks to the help from my friends I keep pluggin along.

Hi Kurt - I don't want to say goodbye because I am hoping you will stay. I love an artistic mind and appreciate your work. I don't comment as much as I'd like because I have had limited time lately. I have found that everything on the internet tends to slow down in North America in the Summer with so many people having things to do. I think the slow down in views and such has as much to do with that as anything else. It certainly isn't a reflection of your work.

I tried to get Kurt to come back and read all the comments... but he won't. Maybe he'll change his mind later.
Kurt is the reason I'm on this forum to begin with. He was the first person to respond to me on the other forum that I found before this, but I bought a tumbler, and wanted tumbling info. The reason I stayed here was because I saw Kurt here too. He will always be my first rock buddy, wherever he is. Sad doesn't begin to describe how I feel about him leaving.

Kurt, I don't think I've ever commented on your posts. I'm a cabber and collector, not a carver. That doesn't mean I haven't viewed your work. I enjoy seeing and reading about just about anything rock related. I'll miss seeing your creations, and the progress you've made in your craft. Perhaps if I weren't getting so old, and my hands weren't getting stiff with age, I'd give carving a try. I have one big hunk of mottled green nephrite that I haven't slabbed because I can see the shape of a big bull frog in it. I wish I had your skill, so I could expose that frog.

I am absolutely heartbroken, I was going to start my first carving, all because of you, Now what am I going to do when I have a question about my carving? Please don't go.

Sorry to see you go, Kurt. Your creations brought something new on the board and it's pitty you decided to leave. But in the same time I gotta say that a "five minutes cab" can sometimes hide inside thousands of years in which the Nature painted on it a breathtaking pattern. We here are mostly fascinated by the natural beauty of the stones. Adrian PS. Sorry, but the more I think the more "slapping" I find your five minute cab thing, so may I kindly ask you: "how long" carvings would you name yours, compared to these ones?

Adrian, don't take it too personal! I think he was trying to say cabbing does not compare with carving but was a little abrasive the way it came out. I've yet to be able to make a cab in less than 30 minutes cabbing and carving are like apples and oranges so no way to compare. I don't mind if I do not have a huge following I do this because I like to and share my results for others to see. If I wanted a classroom with teachers I would find an accomplished artist to tutor me and not expect a forum and its members to do that chore. different strokes for different folks!

I wrote him a nasty letter and let him know that there was absolutely no reason to go out like that. Plus I informed him that if he is just doing the carving for attention he is not an artist. Artists do it for the sake of doing it. Well that is the way I feel and I think a lot of the artists on here feel the same way. If you make some money off of it and get that fuzzy feeling that is the icing. He was a good friend but after that I told him that I probably would not miss him that much. Jim BTW He informed me that he is not coming back to read this so not much use in wasting any more time here.

Man I'm bummed that your leaving, artists get feelings hurt pretty easy. It,s just the nature of the beast. But you should know even though you can,t see this, Ive told a bunch of people about your cheese and mouse pendant, and Ive seen there faces light up, and a smile come across there face. I agree that carving is it's own thing, and the only thing I can carve is stick man. I'm also one who wouldn't fully comprehend the time or patience it takes. Your a great artist and will miss your comments and your Work! .................Hub

I will miss seeing his work. It seemed out of character for Kurt to imply the things he did with the 5 min. cab jab. But, I guess he has his reasons for mass-dissing. I think Adrian has a good point in posting photos of work far superior, When one is climbing a tree it is easy to be tempted to piss on those lower than you, whilst forgetting there are limbs above you as well.
So long, Break a leg as the saying goes. . .

I think he was trying to say cabbing does not compare with carving Yeah, but why say that at all? I love cabbing, it's one of my favorite pastimes. Not sure that any of us do 5 minute cabs here. I don't get offended by much, but that sort of offended me. Not sure what I or any other cabber on these forums did to deserve that comment, so with that being said, I hope that the door doesn't hit him in the ass on the way out. I could not figure that one out either after all it is a forum for all rock related hobbies!!! don't know what batch of sour grapes were consumed to be so down about it Oh and well, onward and upward don't have time to dwell on the negative

We don't know what's been going on in pm's guys. Somebody already confessed to sending him nasty pm's. There's been alot of unnecessary heavy handedness going around lately.

I don't think Kurt meant any disrespect in his comment about 5 min cabs. That was not his style. Everyone has their own specific needs that need to be nurtured and fulfilled. Recognizing those needs brings you half way there to fulfilling them. I hope he finds the satisfaction which he craves Stu
