I would think cabbing is a type of carving...
Noun 1. carving - a sculpture created by removing material (as wood or ivory or stone) in order to create a desired shape 2. carving - removing parts from hard material to create a desired pattern or shape Is that not what we cabbers do... John

Dear Friends,
I finally had courage (after being urged to do so, by a number of people who did contact me after the post) to actually open the post, and was ready for all sorts of …… Yet I find myself in a mostly hearth warming environment, something that I was missing these past few months (kind feedbacks are nice, but not what I was looking for). RTH at its best as such, together as a family.
Bill of Grayfingers, hit the nail on the head 99.9%, yet for exactly the opposite reason. I’m no better than my neighbor, and I feel only together we can succeed. No-one can hit me on my head with superior work, because those are the works that I aspire too and every time I pick up a stone or tool remind myself what could be if I keep practicing, yet fully aware that I most likely will never get there. I have been speaking to the creator of the snail for a while as he has continuously produced absolutely stunning pieces (this being only the latest published one). That’s what I shall be aiming for in the future.
Being who I am, I need roots, if I ever want to get there. MY ROOTS ARE HERE AMONG EVERY ONE OF YOU, but if you feel not qualified to correct me, then I will stop learning. And that’s wherein my decision to leave lies. Not born in ego, but in need to be corrected to get there. Just because some of you have never done carving, does not mean that you shouldn’t have the right or be afraid to voice your honest opinion on something. My rather rapid advance to the current level should be proving exactly that point. Without all YOUR help, I would not have gotten here.
As for the 5 minute snipe: I knew that that would be something that hurt some people, yet would be perfectly understood by others. So let me clear that up.
While written in spite at the time, in no way did I ever intend to insult anyone, nor was it meant to be taken literally. A five minute work by Picasso sells for millions of dollars, yet I still call it that way. Heck; this guy produced nearly 500 works in a single year at his height.
Adrian: To the creator of the snail (quite akin to you and your sword), my creations are 5 minute works (by the way, he worked on the snail for over 8 months). Plus I must note here too; I fail to remember a single occasion where I would have lifted my small gifts above anyone else’s and or compared myself to anyone. If memory serves right, never have I openly or in PM’s done so in any form. Opposite; I know my limitations, yet try to break through them and encourage others to do so too at the best I can. The motto has always been, “If I can, so can you”!
So in the end, I will not return as it was, but after reading the posts, I do think I did wrong by all of you, for taking down all the pictures. To correct that, I do feel it just and right to reload the text and pictures where possible, without pushing them all up on the list (and have done so while rethinking this note) as they where to give others the chance here to learn from my mistakes.
Finally in closing as written to a few members through PM:
If I'm just about showing off; don't you think I would be quite happy to remain? A mouse can teach the Elephant, as long as the elephant is willing to listen. Any and all opinions, I have and always will welcome and respect.
You must understand, I have no resentment against any one person on RTH and hold a lot of people here in high regard, because, I focus on their work, and incredible wealth of knowledge, not on their activities outside the rock-theme.
By the end of the day I think, we are all here to learn and enjoy this amazing hobby. In my case, it looked like I could not partake really in either anymore, so I moved on. Most people do so quietly and no-one realizes, but that's not me , I prefer people know what’s going on and through that, possibly delay their own demise for the same reason.
Thank you all once again for your kind words and help over the past year, and remember my signature: Anything that is not given; is lost! I pretty much, live by that and it has held me in good stead, hence now that I have asked for, there is no real return.
Be blessed and stay in the light! Kurt

As for the 5 minute snipe: I knew that that would be something that hurt some people Then why say it at all? Honestly, we don't cab to get attention from others. We cab because we love to do it. You took a good thing and turned it into a bad thing. I don't recall any cabbers ever saying anything about your work that could be taken in a hurtful way. There are a few people in your corner, but I'm not one of them. You can stay gone, I'll forget about you by next week until the next one comes along.

Well said, Randy. Most of us have lots of reasons to be here, the best being the comfort that community provides. It's sad to see a talented person derailed by themselves over their own need for the spotlight. Sadly, kk reportedly removed the images of their fine work, thus assuring that they will be forgotten. And yet, as evidenced by this topic, they are still lurking, seeing if they're getting any attention. Smacks of a pathology, that. So, back to the happy task of community! Going to go see what new rocks have come to grass! Ta-Ta, y'all! Kris

I think it's good to remember there are people here who don't speak English as their first language. I get where Kurt was coming from and it wasn't the lack of limelight it was the lack of honest feedback. I'm not defending or arguing just putting that out there. When one is learning they need that honest feedback. Kurt knows he is still learning and came here for help with that. I hope he finds a place where there are more carvers to give him constructive criticism. As for the cab comment-- I took him to mean that some people slap them out without thinking of the artistic quality of the stone in front of them. Just my take. It is good to remember, though that not all of Van Gough's paintings are masterpieces --- wait--- bad example, but you know what I mean. Nothing wrong with a few that are just for the helluvit, but shouldn't we all be striving for some idea of perfection? Yet, maybe comparing cabs and carving are like comparing apples and oranges. I don't know, I never tried carving. I don't think I have the talent for it.

Normally this would be the case, but what he said, coupled with the fact that he deleted the pics from his previous posts. Here's the comment that he made (direct quote from his speech).... "I'm going to remove all the content too, as its going to be missed by very few anyway". To me this spells out attention whore in every sense of the word. We see this from time to time, so they're always easy to pick out. I don't come here to associate with people like this, I come here to associate with people like you

Thanks Randy But Kurt realized that what he did was wrong: And, the fact that he was mindful not hog up the new post spots tells me he isn't an attention whore. As I said, I hope he finds the constructive criticism he needs to be the best he can be.

Most all of us that carve are not teachers and I for one am self taught.
The forum is not a school for learning the finer points of carving, for that you need someone who is very accomplished and apprentise under them or be schooled at a collage for the art of carving.
All he will get in this setting is more novice carvers and non carvers looking and conversing but no real benefit in the learning area.
I hope he can find what he needs to further his skills as a carver, China is full of some very skilled artisans!
this is a place to have fun with like minded people and I think he tried to put too serious a spin on it. He in my opinion just tossed the baby out with the bath water

From Shakespeare's As You Like It, 1600:
All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first the infant, Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms. And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school. And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard, Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel, Seeking the bubble reputation Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lined, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances; And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice, Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

This is an example of why I can't stop looking at this board. Shakespeare and rocks all together in one place.
