Due to lack of interest and general absence of discussions on carving matters, save for a handful of fantastic artists, I'm going to withdraw from RTH. I seem to have overstayed my welcome here (looking at page views and responses). Once spammers, 5 minute cabs, etc. get a lot more attention than something that takes weeks to create, it’s time to move on, hence, I'm going to remove all the content too, as its going to be missed by very few anyway. I love talking and getting people’s ideas as to how to improve things. When this is taken away, there is no incentive going through the required time and effort to post. It only leaves a bitter aftertaste. Over the past year, I got to know some fantabolous people here and hope to stay in touch by email or other platforms. This last post is for you guys/gals, because without your help and kind advice, I would have never come that far. 14 Highlights of the past year while indulging on the forum with some of its fantastic members to remember me by, for those who are interested: and finally Sorry again, will keep the account as such for a possible eventual return when there is a more conductive environment for someone like me, so if someone would like to contact me in the meantime, you can do so by email at bchallenge@yahoo.com at any given time or reach me on FB under my full name. Best regards, Kurt

Sorry to see you go Kurt - I may be following you soon myself. I completely understand your view and reasoning. It's tragic, however, as you are right - there are so many great people here. I know that and I haven't even been here very long. But I can attest to the issue of interest that doesn't help you further your art - and so it ends up being more of a burden in time and effort to post and reply to the few who do share your passion - both from the doer and the viewer points of view. Time you could be spending elsewhere, where the terms of involvement are more equitable. And quite frankly there seems to be more interest here in politics than there does in a lot of hard work put forth bringing life to stone. That issue pains me greatly because if I were to post as much about rocks on a political forum as I see about politics on this rock forum I have no doubt I'd be 86'd from the members list. No doubt such words will stir some heat my way but ya know what - bring it on. I probably won't even read it (because I'm here for cabbing, carving, mineralogy and geology - you know, rocks). Apologies for my own soapbox - I guess your leaving here is really going to put a dent in the place. For me at least, and other who love your work in stone.

Kurt:
Glad to see you will keep your account open as this is a very "dynamic" board, one that evolves on a regular basis. Members come and go, others get side tracked by life events and the political topics ebb and flo.
I used to post more, read more, but my habit of reading the "most recent posts" as a way to keep up, has been stymied by the inundation over the last year with political diatribes, hate posts, and paranoia. I have chosen to drop back and be less involved. It gives me more time for my rocks. Where I might have answered a post or posted a picture in the past, I just move on. It used to be the only posts that weren't about rocks were some funny jokes that I enjoyed and shared with some of my non-rock friends.
Let me say that I have enjoyed seeing your carvings. I have rarely commented, for the reasons mentioned above. You are a skilled artisan and I am better for having experienced them. Best of luck in your endeavors and thank you for sharing.
Sue

I am amazed at how each one of your carvings has progressed & would be very disappointed to see your pictures disappear! I am especially impressed with the dinosaur bone squid & I still can't get over the frog!!! (I like frogs)! I don't do any carving, don't believe I have the capabilities to do so, but then I have never tried either! I am hard pressed to have even patience to drill a hole ( much to my brother's dismay, he has been waiting months!), much less carve anything in stone, esp that small. Hats off to you for honing such a skill & your amazing talent! I am also tired of all the political back & forth!!!

I guess this must be going away day. At least you have a valid reason for going. I got the carving thread started and it has not been as popular as I had hoped. The carving path is a better forum for carvers because that is what the people there do as a first instead of a second hobby.
But I feel that this being our first summer here we are not accustomed to the drop in interest because people have a lot of things to do in the summer besides rocks and carving. If you have been here you know that most people in this country have a good sized yard and maybe a garden to care for and we do most of the repairs on our own houses. Many people are gone on vacation at any point in time through the entire summer. Grand kids come to visit because they are out of school and grand parents spend a lot of time with them. The list goes on and on as far as things that take us away from our hobbies during the summer.
Then there are the hundreds of people that look but for some reason will not make a comment.
As I told third rock there is no reason for anyone to click on newest threads because if you only use that method like me you are missing a lot of posts that pass by while you are away. It is a poor way to use this forum because going down the list of things that you are interested in instead of everything listed gets you straight to the point and you do not have to skip over a lot of stuff you are not interested in. I have found that using the newest thread button has caused me to miss several things that I really am interested in so I am going back to my old way of using this thread which is not going near the newest thread button.
Ok, I am done with my ten cents worth and I know that we will cross paths many times in the future. Good luck Jim

I am so sad to read of your departure. You have always displayed a true spirit for the art. I can understand that you might not want to post anymore as to the change in direction that many feel the forum has taken. I do not understand why you would want to remove all of your posts. That seems to be such a waste and compounds the loss of you leaving. Why would you want to do that? There are many people both present and future that will surely benefit from being able to see your work Stu

Sorry to hear you are going. I really enjoyed the progressions and final product of your carvings. you have been an inspiration for me and I am sure a lot of other people. when I get brave enough I would like to try carving myself, I have been wanting to try wood for lots of years but didn't know where to start until I seen your carvings I couldn't think in 3D until then and hope to start on wood then progress to stone. nice meeting you and thank you for the knowledgeable post I will miss reading them. Once spammers, 5 minute cabs, etc. get a lot more attention . . . Hmmm? Five-minute cabbers? A rare breed indeed. Can’t say I’ve met any around here.

This makes me sad Kurt. Please don't delete your posts, let them live to teach others that might want to venture into carving.
I've never carved yet but it is something that I would like to try someday. I can find a picture in a stone and frame it but I have yet to figure out how to take that picture and turn it three dimensional the way you so expertly do. I admire all of your work and it will be very sad to not have your positive and happy presence here on the board. (you always make me smile!)

Kurt, although I don't always have time to comment on photos of everyone's projects, I must say that your carvings have always inspired me. You definitely have a skill and passion for it! While I have never carved stone in my life, seeing your carvings has made me want to start. I have a chunk of green rock, that I think would make a great frog. My biggest problem, is I think I wouldn't have the patience to do a project that could take from weeks to months... How do you stay focused?
That said, we will certainly miss you, but I am glad that you will be leaving your account open for possible return in the future. Please leave your posts up as well, so they may inspire others. Jean

I'll be the first to say that I'm not a carver (or cabber, for that matter), just a general hobbyist and collector. However, I'm hoping you'll stick around. I like viewing your work (and Jim's and others) and it would be a loss to RTH. However you decide, I do appreciate your work and thanks for posting your photos.

Wow, I'm a little shocked. I thought there was a ton of interest. Keep in mind that for some of us, carving is a very difficult and slow thing to get started with. Expensive too. We can't all post as often or offer valuable ideas to more advanced members. It doesn't mean we're not interested. We just may feel that we have nothing useful to say on the topic. I don't feel comfortable posting my feeble attempts to date. It doesn't mean I have no interest!!!
Why not continue to post here while meeting higher level carvers also on the carving path? I don't think there is any rule against posting your projects at both places. Here you can inspire more beginners and those of us who try to carve the occasional item, and there you can meet more advanced carvers who can assist with more challenging projects.
Also, as parfive says, my cabs may raise a chuckle but they take more like 2 hours than 5 minutes. I'm sure if I had your gift, they would take me 5 minutes. But I don't...for me, it's slow going, and it's a big triumph just to post my drilled items. A few months ago I could not even drill a hole in stone and to be honest it's still iffy as I still have relatively few perfectly shaped and drilled pendants...

Kurt,
I have always enjoyed your post and I think your work is amazing. I have to admit that I do not always respond to your post but I look at them. I admire your work and enjoy seeing your progress and growth. I think you will be missed....but we all must follow our hearts.

Kurt, as you can see (read), your work is a part of this forum and would be missed. I, like Randy, always look at posts but don't always reply to them. We all have an interest in rocks or we wouldn't be here. But, our interests aren't all in the same area of carving ,flat lapping, tumbling, cabbing etc... All who post thier work here bring something to the rock hobbie table. Yours is no exception!! Reconcider and let your ART be shown here. Roger has posted two very good sentiments, of which I agree to both!

Hey Kurt, I look at everyone of your posts but since I have never carved anything I don't really feel I have anything to contribute except maybe "thats cool" or such. You have inspired me to go buy a foredom and some bits and when I get some time to sit down and play with it I am going to give it a try, but I don't see that happening in the very near future. I will miss your posts but can understand your needing a different sort of forum, although I think there is definitely interest in your work here. Hope you leave the old content up as I need something to go back and look at when I do give it a try. Have a great day my friend...............Tony
