Thanks snuffy, This was a stressful batch since it came from Kystee. I didnt want to screw it up. theres just a few edges and sharp points that frosted but I didnt get any chipping at all.
I read somewhere about adding corn syrup to the mix to thicken it and slow down the action in the rotary. Has anyone tried this method?

thanks for that link Jean. I might not be able to get them any better at this point but I have enough for another batch so I may keep researching it. I also read somewhere about cutting small strips of felt or leather and adding that to the mix to cushion and help polish.

There was a recent thread on here about how to break up obsidian. I got some in a trade recently but haven't tumbled it yet. What method did you use to break it up, Chuck? I just said upchuck. That's funny.

Ok, I'll just have to go read that thread again and see what Krystee recommends. I'm excited to try obsidian too. Unfortunately I'm excited for about 10 other things that I haven't tumbled yet too. There's definitely an advantage to that awesome 8 barrel tumbler you build, Chuck.

Snuffy, thanks. What causes it, and how can you get rid of it? Does it only happen to obsidian?

Pat,I'm not an expert on obsidian tumbling, but I suppose banging together without enough cushioning is the main problem.Somebody else can answer better.Obsidian is the only problem I ever had with frosting.

That's my understanding too. That's why I went with 50 percent ceramics in the 500 grit and in the polish.

I've seen this "frosting" of the edges in rose quartz also. It was polished in a vibe tumber.

AWESOME Chuck!!! Your batch looks fantastic!!! Yes, the absence of lots of cushioning or a stray hard rock chip that slipped into the batch will cause frosting. I always do 50% ceramics. I don't polish in rotaries so I'm not sure what the best method is to slow it down. Have you tried adding Borax to the load when you add your grit? In the vibe it thickens it up a lot and burnishes a bit while sanding. Maybe a couple of tablespoons would get it nicely thick and slow? I'm soooo happy to see this batch! I knew you would nail the obsidian just like your other incredible batches!!!

I have a batch of obsidian and slag glass in 60/90 now. I loaded it more full than normal with lots of ceramics to keep the action from beating things up too much. I hope what I end up with is half as nice as what you have Chuck, your batch looks really nice!
