Hi, I wanted to bounce things off my RTH family since you probably have more imagination than I do at this point. A friend of mine who owns a bead store suggested I change my business name since Rockhound Designs doesn't scream jewelry to anyone unless you know that's what I do. I am beginning to agree with her but am at a loss for names. She suggested Aphrodite Designs but I'm not really keen on that one. Since you are fellow wrappers/jewelry people I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone can help me come up with a name. If you've been on here any length of time you have seen my work and/or know me so who better than to ask for help when it comes to names. After all, it took me a long time and lots of brain cells to come up with Rockhound Designs so I could use some help. Got any suggestions? I'd like to keep the word "jewelry" out of it but other than that anything's possible. How about a brain storming session on here? I know there are some more creative than I am on here and a lot of you have such good business names. Any ideas?

I think the biggest challenge is to come up with something unique. I think I took 3 months to figure out my business name "Zoria's" I know I didn't want my brand name to have jewelry or something like that in it, but still my tag line is always "Fine Art and Jewelry" or "Wire Wrapped Jewelry" So people know what I'm selling Anyway, I would start with tossing around just general words that you feel your jewelry exudes, what do you want the name to be like? I had a list of probably the top ten words I wanted my brand name to say things like "elegant" "natural" "genuine" "unique" things like that. Then I personally went the way of your friend's suggestion and started looking through names of all sorts of religion's goddesses. Zoria's is the Slavic goddess of beauty Do you have some key words we could work with that you'd like your business and jewelry to be correlated with? Krista

I went with Mostly Monochrome for selling my photography. Something unique and simple that describes my work.

Really great topic. A business name is so important and a lot of thought should go into it. I think you should consider your target audience. Who do you want to appeal to? What might catch their interest? What feeling do you want to convey? Do you want casual, comfortable, high end, sophisticated, etc? I don't think you have to have jewelry or anything in your name if you can get established with a catchy name. Consistency would be key. Besides as it has already been mentioned, your byline will describe what you sell. Like I am Tela Formosa, but my store is Tela Formosa Jewelry or Tela Formosa Designs or Tela Formosa Jewelry Designs etc. Once you get a name established, people will remember it and search for that. I get tons of search hits just for my name on both my stores. BTW Tela Formosa roughly translates to Design Well Formed in Latin Personally, I think the whole Goddess name is overdone and I wouldn't do that. Throw out some ideas for us to thumb up or down. Chose a few names unique to you or your passions or your history or where you live, etc.

I went back to look at your store and I see classic wire wrapping with a flair. I'm assuming you also do your own cab. If I am right, then it isn't obvious enough and should be. Maybe something like Classy Cabbed Creations or something like that? Or, Classy Cabs etc. (Just throwing out ideas.) Personally- I would find a good actual name and brand it. I think it works on many levels. Most of the better sellers and artists I see use a name, whether real or not. Something that says "I made this." I'm not making much sense am I?

My personal thinking is that whatever you choose, as said above, needs to be unique.....and apply to you.
The most *recognizable* names in any business are very simple.....ie; wal-mart, zales, bloomingdales, kohl's, etc etc etc....simple 1 word names, easy to remember. That's the human side of things...
For the online selling part tho...your biz name should reflect something you do on a regular basis.....ie; Superior Agates......we cut/cab/wrap a lot of lake superior agates.....Stones that rock ie; they cut stones....& Cabochon......people look for cabochons.......this helps for search engine recognition....a big big deal in selling online.
So for instance, if you work with a lot of jasper stones......simply Jaspers might be ok....I know silly analogy, but you get my drift, every time you list something made with a Jasper of any kind, google/search engines will pick up on your stuff quicker simply because your biz name and a listing coincide.
I see a LOT of people with LONG drawn out biz names, and, while unique, they are not easy to remember for people, and don't really have a key word in them to make search engines pick up on them.....
tie your biz name directly with a word that you will use in listings on a regular basis, keep the name as simple and easy to remember as possible....
Just MHO.... Marie

The reason I picked Rock Wrapsody is because I wrap the rocks! And I liked the play on words. How about something that has to do with the earth and jewelry? Oh, and be sure you file a Trade Name, only costs $10 here in AZ and is good for 10 years. No one else can use that name. I own the name Rock Wrapsody! My ideas are: Molten Rock Designs Metamorphic Designs Rock'n Designs Of the Earth Designs The Wrapped Earth! I personally love that one
I will think on it more.

Wow, thanks for the ideas and suggestions. I thought of Diane's Designs but that brings to mind designing as in "interior design", at least in my mind. No, I don't make my own cabs yet. I have made a few thanks to Sheri but don't know if I'll be making all of them for quite a while. I don't have any up on my website right now but I intend to have beaded jewelry and possibly beaded items like hair clips too. Cathy, I can't help it but the treasure idea just brought up pirates to me...lol. Sheri, I like Wrapped Earth too although I think of dirt when I think of earth...maybe my demented mind...lol. Rockrookie, you do make sense, it's my mind that isn't working...lol. Marie, you have a good idea there about the search engine thing. I had never thought of that. I use the term wire-wrapped a lot but that seems to be overused plus it excludes beaded jewelry. I thought of handmade but that's overused as well. I work with a lot of different stones so not one in particular (plus superioragates is taken...lol). Anybody notice a word or two I use a lot on my site? Maybe my problem is that I don't have a signature type or design of jewelry I make. I'm basically all over the place from casual to classy, beads to stones, wire to stitched beading, and so on. I wish I could concentrate on one thing but that's just not me and I don't wanna (stamps foot...lol). I don't wear jewelry much, I'm not a girly girl, I'm about nature, simplicity (although you wouldn't know it from my wire wraps - even my mom can't figure out where the swirly fancy comes from), and being down to earth. I do know though that a lot of my target audience is the people who wear jewelry, like bling, or are into showing off pretty stuff, at least that's what I'm thinking. I prefer to use natural stones but I also use glass and crystal - definitely no plastic though.
What about -
Artemis Gems (Artemis is the goddess name that corresponds to the Roman goddess Diana) Pendants and Presents (but doesn't that limit me since I want people who want to buy stuff for themselves too and not just pendants)
Geez, this is really hard and my brain hurts now. How about some more ideas from you all?

Hi Diane, Artemis Gems is nice, but what about Artemis Gem (Jewel) Creations? Since it's for your entire business, online and offline, the more specific the identity the better. The addition of "Creations" sparks the curiosity of the potential customer beyond gems, to jewelry. "Artemis" is a nice touch, defying identification as male or female. I would find a classic Grecian medallion with Artemis, and use that as your store avatar. It also gives you an opening to explain your business name to potential customers at shows and public events., Since your designs are essentially "Classic" in design, with fluid curves and meticulous execution, that word might fit well into your business name. Upon reflection, I'd suggest Artemis Classic Jewel Creations. Descriptive, dignified, defined. The prospective patron knows what to expect, but you still have room to surprise them. Good fortune, good business! Kris

I had to go with the obvious when I choose mine, TByrd Designs, I like it. I haven't had a problem with the designs part because you usually don't have just you business name without a one liner. I use Unique beaded and wire wrapped designs, you will need to come up with something for your business. What you use in the one liner should be something you use in your descriptions online, that way they come up in the search engines quicker.
Good luck, I hope it works out for you. Tammy

Just read your reply to the thread and what I immediately though.... and don't shoot me: "Diane's Down & Dirty Designs" It's kinda a play on you being down to earth. LOL! Actually, I rather like it. It's fun, funny, unique and let's face it-- sex sells. Anyway- just thought I's share that. ;D

Agree with Kris, "Creations" is an evocative word sparking curiosity. How about "Down-to-Earth Creations" Jean

Ok, rockjunkie, get your mind out of the gutter...LOL. I agree sex sells but I don't think I want customers who might be interested in more than jewelry if ya know what I mean. I get enough porn junk mail. I do like using "creations" in the name and I could incorporate that word into my listings. I'm torn between Artemis and Earth. Hub, good suggestion but then again it kinda pigeon holes me in wire wrapped jewelry. Keep the ideas coming, there may be something in it for the person who wins my heart and comes up with the new name ;-) How about that for incentive?
