I just want to add a quick thank you to the people that have helped my daughters collection by donating some of these minerals to her.. people from here and in the rock groups on FB... .thank you... we are going to Alabama to rock hound later this month and will be near the AL/GA border and we will be hitting both sides of the border so hopefully we will have more to add when we come back!!

Wow !! Wish I could find $65.00 display cabinets that nice in the thrift stores around here.
As soon as I get a chance, I'll dig through my minerals and stuff, and see if I have anything to add to your daughters collection. I see fossils in there. I have some fossil shark teeth from Shark Tooth Hill in California that I could send her.

Hey Mike, I still haven't discovered where my wife "put away" my whale vertebra. I haven't forgotten. I'll send you one as soon as I unearth them again. When my wife puts something away, it's almost like being on a fossil dig around here.

the fossils are mine but then again... everything is hers eventually anyways and as she is just starting to build up some steam on the subject... we are planning a vacation and she is already talking about finding stuff, mineral & fossil, to add to the cabinet, so I am stoked to help her get that going. I even have plans for plexi stairs to put on the shelves so more can be displayed in the space in the cabinet!!
I found the cabinet at the local thrift and talked about getting it for a week,, no one else had any interest in it, but the day after I bought it, someone came in and tried to buy it before I could pick it up.

Hey Mario, look up acrylic display risers. There's a bunch listed on ebay. But I'll warn you in advance, they ain't cheap. I use them in my Fairburn agate display cabinet. Hope my wife never finds out how much I paid for risers for 5 shelves. If you order some, check the measurements in the listings. You don't want to get them too long, wide or high for your shelves. Most places won't take them back after they've been taken out of their wrappings. I'll see if I can find the company I bought mine from. The prices were pretty good. Great wrapping and very quick shipping. I forgot to bookmark the company I bought from, but I think this is them. www.collectingwarehouse.com/Product-Home-Page/Acrylic-Stairs I used all 3 tier risers, and they left just enough room at the front of my shelves to display a row of thumbnail boxes.

A cheaper alternative to the stair-step type can be the bench riser sets used for retail cases, like these. The frosted type let light down to lower shelves, but don't show every speck of dust (a consideration if your cabinet doors don't seal tightly). Mine specimens are in now trays stored on shelves, so this is a project I've yet to tackle

It would seem I found my eBay nemesis. Don, you and I must have out bid each other on quite a few specimens! I recognize several of your specimens from John Sobolewski as ones that I had bid on. I wonder how many I have that you bid on. Here is an outdated photo of the letter A. I've recently completed it, I'll have to set up the light box to finish cataloging. My favorite thumbnail is a gypsum twin.

LOL, Geoff, I wouldn't be surprised. Lots of people bid on his specimens. I haven't bid on any for a couple months. Too many other irons in the fire at this time.
My catalog system is a mess right now. 2 notebooks full of scribbled notes. About the only specialized collection I have is a growing collection from the U S Borax Mine at Boron Dry Lakes in California. Some are so rare that the chances of getting a specimen are slim to none, but I keep watching for them.

Speaking of scribbled notes (which sadly is my method also), has anyone used Carles Millan's Mineral software? I downloaded a copy, but have yet to actually type anything into it. I'm just wondering about what it features & whether it works OK.

I've had that program on my computer for quite a while, but haven't had time to type in all of my specimens. It seems to be easy to use. I really haven't explored all of the features yet. Maybe this winter when we have 3' of snow on the ground I'll play around with it.

Whoa whoa whoa. Where did you get that?! Hey Geoff, got it from this guy. stores.ebay.com/THE-COLLECTOR-SHOWCASE?_rdc=1Kind of expensive, but I had $63.00 and change in ebay bucks to cash in. He's got some really nice specimens for sale too. Box seems to be well constructed of wood with vinyl covering. At least my thumbnails have a good home now. I can finally throw away all of the used small FRB's they were stored in.
