Nine more specimen pics coming soon. (won them last night). Got some rare ones.
I have a question for our members. Does anyone know what the foam material in the bottom of perky boxes is ? I don't think it's styrofoam, but another type of plastic foam. I want to buy some in black as a contrasting color to display light colored minerals. I have access to a hot wire cutter to make clean cuts. I need the material in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" thicknesses, so I can cut it to sizes to fit larger boxes that I use for specimens too large for perky boxes.

Yup, saw that one already. I don't want to have to pay for shipping foam from Germany when I can buy the material here and cut it to the sizes I need.

Don, since you only need a little maybe www.thefoamfactory.com/ will help. My guess is closed cell polyethylene is what's used. At least it is in other settings.

Thanks Scott, but I think I found what I need. I can get it in 12" X 18" sheets in almost any color, and they accept paypal. Gonna send the company an email to make sure it's what I want.

Yeah, if I find something I want on Mikon, I just order from Shannon and sons. They are a partner in Arizona.

Cerrusite and barite on galena from Mibladen. My topaz. I have more in my MM drawer. I got a deal on the red Mexican topaz. $1 each. Pyrite I'll drag out my light box and start taking real pictures today.

I just bought a bunch of specimen containers from UKGE: www.ukge.com/usa/specimen-boxes.aspEven though they are in the UK the shipping was very cheap. They have black specimen boxes that would provide the same effect you are looking for and you can get permanent glue dots at the craft stores to set them in the boxes.

Forgot to mention, I've been looking for a source of 1/16" clear plexiglass rods to make short pedestals for smaller mineral specimens. Finally found one this morning that would accept payment by paypal. I bought a bundle of 40 pieces for $14.45, shipping included. Way more than I'll ever use. If anyone needs a few pieces, give me a shout.

Just ordered 40 clear acrylic 2X2X2 inch boxes for my miniature specimens. Cost me $27.76. Free shipping. If anyone needs some, the seller has lots, and sells them in boxes of 20. Let me know, and I'll PM seller info.

I am guessing that most of those are from the internet. They are from so many distant places. A lot of travel required to buy in person. It is mind boggling to see the variety of mineral compounds. Lot to look at in a small area. Keep em coming Don.

Found something else I've been wanting. I've been looking for radiation warning stickers small enough to fit on thumbnail boxes, for my radioactive specimens. They're impossible to find without having them custom made. I was looking a novelty rubber stamps on Etsy, and found a 3/8" radiation stamp and a neon yellow stamp pad. I already have 1/2" blank stickers. As soon as the stamp gets here, I'll make up a sheet of stickers and post a pic of a marked box.
Next I want a tiny skull and cross bones stamp, so I can mark boxes that contain minerals with arsenic, mercury etc.

LOL, guess I need to check more boxes in the basement. Found this specimen today. Sphalerite, (Black Jack Ore). Collected in the mid 50's in the Tri State Mining District near Joplin, Missouri. Too big for a thumbnail box. I'll mount it in a 2" cube box and print a label tomorrow.

WOW !! The deep pockets bidders were out in force tonight. I watched specimens going for double and triple what they were actually worth. Oh well ! I have 6 nice specimens coming that I won earlier this week. Pics coming when they arrive.
