edmohs, the tumbler has not been put out to pasture just yet. It is only resting . I'll get a lot more mileage out of it before I'm through with it, just have to get my butt in gear and do it. Now that it's cooled down and I won't need the A/C until January or so, maybe I can afford a little electricity to run the tumbler. I'll probably have a heart attack when I get last month's bill... You made it happen, Ed, thanks again for your kindness! Jean

No, Scott, not at this minute. It's waiting for me to make some preforms before starting the next batch of rough. I have a vibe tumbler for subsequent steps (purchased at Quartzsite about four years ago and never used yet). Does that say something about my ADD? Bought it and lost interest before even using it? I WILL make those preforms and start a new batch, promise!

My tumbler has been down for a week. The grit made the bearings for the motor shaft a lot bigger. New used motor has different bolt pattern so i added a new slot for the narrower 2 bolts
with two 4.5 inch grinder wheels. !/8 inch thick steel with 7 inch long slot about 5/16 wide. Sparks in the scalp galore. reduced from 1/2 to 1/3 HP and smaller pulley so it is running more slower
than HP reduction so i should be fine. So i grind slots and Jean would mill hers out titanium 6061 alumyana. I had an employee that called aluminum 'lumyana'. Fell out laughing every time.
Your retrovintage is bad to the bone.

Awesome job on the tumbler.
When you plan to tumble your preforms how far along do you have to have them to get a real nice smooth one sided cab?
George was one of the best back when comedy was comedy. Red Skelton (sp) was my all time favorite though. I would love to watch all of his stuff all over again. I will have to check to see if it is available.

Thank you, James. I have to say real bearings did the job. Bet they didn't think when they made thosew with the plastic sleeves that peopl would still be using them still. So is your (more slower) tumbler running now? Which one is that, the tire, or the big barrel? Not titanium - manganese, magnesium, molybdenum, something like that (kidding). And that would be 6061-T6 aluminum. I knew someone that called it ma-luminum. Do you remember the cartoon, where there was a mysterious planet called Muni Mula (aluminum spelled backwards)? Yeah, it was Ruff and Ready. Edit - Thanks, Jim. I haven't tumbled any preforms yet, but I'd think a week or two in the rotary, before going on to the vibe. Depends how much I shape them beforehand, and how hard they are.

I had a job welding satellite dishes for Scientific Atlanta. All we welded was 6061-T6. You know stuff. That is cool. I keep tellin' ya, I'm smarter than the average bear!

Thanks for the clarification. When a cousin was young, he had a pronunciation problem, absolutely insisted it was "roonium", sorta stuck with me.

Lumyana stuck w/me. Only every time i think of that metal. And the other employees would stay amused by Wesley's pronunciation. If you said lumyana pole to Jerry he would start laughing. Jerry was his boss 35 years ago.

Yes, James, I know what you mean. So I'd guess transparent aluminum would be around T-967 or so? Be kind of hard to weld it, since you couldn't see it... They probably have some kind of magic wand they can just point at it and it automatically fuses.

Jean, I've just puchased a Scott Murray tumbler semilar to this one. I needs the same kinds of repairs. Your information will help alot. My barrel is a two sided model like Matt's. I'm going to order the "full size" liner to use for my larger stones. I'm also planning to use this tumbler for the rough grits and switch to a viberator style tumbler for the finer grits.
The rock club I belong to just had it's annual show. We went though a lot of tumbled rocks for the kids activities. I am one of two of the club members that donates tumbled rocks, so I've gotten my marching orders to crank up the tumblers and keep them running 24-7 until the next club event. Bill

Wow! Your skills are amazing. Feels great to get something to work!
There might be a manual online for your machine.
