When I posted those pet wood pictures, I mentioned that they came from the estate of Myrle Kirk who past away at 95 years young. I was able to get her slide collection. Much of it was labeled. Some came in binders. Some loose in boxes. But there was also a 3 foot high slide cabinet that was filled. Near the bottom was one drawer labeled "Rock Trips". The photos below are just a sampling of the images I found there. I will be compiling a book of the images (plus the ones from my club) much like the Agate Index's but focused on historical material. I hope you enjoy. Hope you enjoyed your history lesson! Lowell

I love to compare the old photos with recent ones. A lot of those places you'll never get a chance to go to now. Photo Lowell posted: Sidewinder Mtn for Verde Antique Marble Jan 1960 Photo Christopher posted in March 2013 Not the exact same angle, but you get the idea. Thanks for posting those, Lowell. Looking forward to your upcoming book of similar images.

Wow those are fantastic. "More please" And some of those I can even say were before my time, LOL. I did recognize the Brownie Roll Camera - my dad used one a lot. You gotta wonder what nice material they found back then. Wonder what it will look like in another 50 years, yikes! And what the rigs then will be. Thanks Lowell!

Thanks for the show, those old pics. are nice to see. About ten yrs ago, a couple in our club put on a 2 1/2 hr. slide show for us. They went on their first rock trip in '47, don't remember when they started w/slides, but what fun to see. Me being a long-time auto enthusiast makes it double the interest.

Christopher's image is "from" sidewinder mountain. Looking down on the gathering. The old image must be as well. Here is my image "of" sidewinder mountain taken from near the site of the gathering. I believe the diggings in the distance in the "from" images is the Pfizer "shasta white" quarry. It's really big!

Thanks for all the great replies and responses!
I'll be posting a few new ones soon, but I had to pack up the scanner for a few days while getting ready for the new school year.
I love how the then and now photos are being done! Thanks for adding!
And I really would love one of those non-aerodynamic truck/campers they drove around in back then.
Any new photos will be added to this thread and I'll post the update date in the title so you can know when I added images (unless you as a group hate that idea and request new threads.)
Thanks again!
Lowell

Ed stoner, it's on the jade! Have a closer look. I promise it's there. Picture of the Pfizer mine from on top of verde antique. Much higher up than both the old image and Christopher's. The Pfizer mine is in the distance ~1/6th of the way in from the right.

Lowell, I too love the old trucks and to see how they camped inside them. Personally I cannot wait to see more, and do not care how you do it, here on in new threads.

I see the Brownie. My Dad gave me his 1957 Rolleicord twin lense reflex. Totally manual large format and taught me photography from the ground up.
Still despise AUTO mode on cameras and still shoot manual. I have that camera in the safest place.
That is a walk in the past. Those were the golden days of collecting and lapidary.
The thing that blows my mind is the vintage camper shells. I see old vehicles regularly but never those shells. I am sure they scrapped out.

One of my early childhood memories is camping by Mt Shasta in a 15 foot (appreoximately) Aladdin towed by our old Pontiac wagon. Lee

I found it. My wife got pulled all over the country by her Dad with one of those when she was a kid. Her job was to pinch his ear lobs when he was getting sleepy at the wheel. Strange family.

Love that chicken dad is holding! How fun! I can't believe how small those things were, and yet, they took entire families on vacations. Guess we are just spoiled today.
