Update: Sprinkles had a series of seizures a year or so ago. May have left him deaf and blind at the time. We think sight and hearing may have returned a bit. He gets around very well out of the palace.
However, he cannot feed himself. Tries, but always misses his mouth, so he is still being hand fed and will never be able to live in the wild outdoors.
He looks mighty healthy and has gained weight.
Odd that being hand fed and living indoors, he still goes through preferences that would be normal outdoors. He devours avocados during avocado season, but refuses them at other times. He sheds for summer and grows a thicker coat for winter.

 Sprinkles and Loki by Pat, on Flickr Sprinkles last December. That is after the stroke. Cat Loki is in the cat carrier. The heating pad is for Sprinkles because he frequently gets cold. The two are not exactly friends, but they seem to have a truce (somewhat enforced), and are a bit competitive for daughter's attention. |

We have the same greys and blacks in our yards here. My wife feeds the birds and squirrels.....comical to watch. Over every morning, I think they hear Sharon firing up the coffee pot. Hey, Works for me as well!

I have a live gopher trap. It is very effective for gopher control........
I'm not sure if it is a he or she barn owl. I've had a barn owl box up in my shop eaves for about 5 years now. No owls last year because of the drought, they either went deep for moist soil or died off somewhat. With all the rain we have had there are masses of gophers and a resident barn owl. I haven't heard any babies yet but they will arrive with all the food source this year. I walked by the front of the owl box this morning and he/she was peering out at me.
What surprises me is that with all the oak trees and abundant acorns here there are NO squirrels up here in the Gold Country. I was used to lots of squirrels in the Bay Area though.

UPDATE: Sprinkles had another series of strokes last month and died. He is buried in our backyard.
Daughter now has a new squirrel who is blind in one eye. His behavior is different from Sprinkles, he makes a different sound, and he loves to eat rose petals ---- and does. His name is Pangolin. Don't ask me why! Picture soon.

Pat , so sorry to hear of Sprinkles passing. Wow, you have had him for almost six years! That's a very long time in squirrel years.
Glad that she (your daughter) now has Pangolin, blind in one eye or not. (I won't ask about the name , lol.) A special needs child.
Isn't it amazing how two animals of the same species can be so different behaviorally? But anyone who has had dogs or cats, can attest to this. Individualism.
ETA, you are talking about one of these, right?

I told her that Pangolin was already in use. She likes the sound. She had a squirrel; not something else. |
