I'll bet my dog can climb a tree better than that ol' turtle.

I said I have box turtles w/different colors. Orange markings on their head instead of yellow. Maybe red too.

James: My wife and I used to have a breeding colony of Three toed Box Turtles in our backyard. The males of those had incredible bright red orange heads on them. We had them for like 30 years and had quite a few babies. Very cute and tame little turtles....Mel

Haha, I did not see your query. I'll take the heat for the mistake. Generally I speak jamesp but is a little obtuse.
Male eastern box turtles are variable. They might have yellow heads or red heads or any color in between. It is the red eyes of the breeding males that is diagnostic.
I love box turtles. Three toes, eastern, florida... all of them are way too cool!

Those box turtles are smart as all get out too. I used to keep a meal worm colony in a kiddie pool on our patio. I'd put the box turtles in it so they could eat their fill but the dang things would always be in burrows in the yard and hard to hunt down. The turtles learned that the vibrations when I was by my shop whacking up rock for the tumbler meant they'd get fed. So, I'd be smacking away at the rocks and I'd look up and box turtles would be gathering from all over the yard. Some would even try too climb in my lap. Real easy way to gather them up for a feeding.....Mel

Scott, They must live a pretty long time as they were big and mature when we got them and we had them more than 30 years easy. I had a Desert Tortoise all my life that I bought at a pet shop for 50cents when I was like nine years old and they were legal to catch. Carried him home on my bike. Had more than a hundred growth rings and was full sized when I bought him. He finally died when I was in my late fifties. Man. I loved that old turtle. He was in almost every birthday party film my folks ever took *S*.....Mel

I had a client whose family owned a desert tortoise. They had an image of "Jimmy" with the turtle in front of a road sign near where he collected it. The back was labelled "Jimmy 1906". Jimmy was my client's great grandfather and she was in her 40's. The tortoise dies in 2002 - 96 years in the family. I'd put the original tortoise at 10+ years but not adult in the 1906 image. Jimmy's tortoise was written into two wills. Somewhere there is a record of an eastern box that had "1876" (or similar) carved in the shell. ha! I found the link!

Mel and Scott. That is the coolest discussion. I am impressed w/people that can care for an animal so long. I have always been curious about the orange and red on them. It is solved. I was a kid when i was curious about it and it resurfaced on this forum and completed a long unanswered question. I always wondered about that. The problem with having a sweet turtle that long is the sadness when it passed away. Turtles are sweet critters. I see so many box turtles.

We rarely have fire ants in the forest. Open fields for the most part. with our high percentage of thick forest the turtles are safe and prospering.
Never knew the fire ants posed a threat.
