My guess would be turtle as well, but which one? Not much colour. Common snapping turtle?
Darryl.

You guys are bang on. Took a year for me to get him out of the lily ponds. He has been tearing up my water lily stock for a long while. The Snapper is said to have 7 textures of meat. My Aunt used to cook them up for me and my cousin. She was a real Florida cracker and preferred Soft Shell over Snapper.

We've got a giant "giant " snapper in a creek behind our house.there used to be an older gentleman that lived up the street from us he said that snapper was in the creek when he moved into the neighborhood back in the late 70's.he is every bit 24-30" across his shell, with a maw big enough to remove a couple fingers in one snap Dave

As Dave says, yes they get big. Another type of snapper mostly in Florida gets bigger than the ones here in Atlanta(alligator snapper). They probably reside in Dave's area too. I have seen 2 in FL. that were huge. the real big ones are rare. But the common snapper is the grumpiest, no social skills whatsoever.

My mom recalls as a youngster putting her ducklings in the cattle pond and to her horror watching them one by one get pulled under by something. Something like a snapping turtle or maybe a big catfish. Our neighbor in Michigan was from Kentucky and he was fond of turtle meat. He said it was a real pain to clean them, but the meat was really, really good. He never got around to sharing any, ha ha.

actually this common snapper is quite large for an adult male. Females get double that.
Jim, nice images. Thanks for sharing.
Love the devils toenails welding cap.

I was sitting on the shore of Lake George one winter staring off in the distance when I saw something bobbing out in the water one morning. Couldn't stand it, had to wade out and investigate. It was a male snapper on top of a female. was impressed w/the male, the female was more like a sea turtle. Took me a while to figure out what he was doing till I saw the giant of a female under him. They went on w/their business never mind me. She was a huge turtle. Was in amazement. Apparently they get very old. Good descipt-devil's toenails. Can't wait to get down there. Maybe in a month or so.

yep them snappers are badass. I see them crossing the yard. They can move pretty quick. They don't drag on the ground like the smaller box turtles. Seen one crossing one year and it had a huge piece of mud on its back the size of a bowling ball.

Seen one crossing one year and it had a huge piece of mud on its back the size of a bowling ball. those guys can dig down deep in our hard clay. They got some power in those short limbs. I put one in the floor board of my beat up car when I was a kid and it tore the carpet out by the time I carried it home. I wonder how fast their strike is. My bulldog found out one day. Had a hell of a hemorrhage on his nose.
