Hi all,
I needed to place a large order and I ran across Johnson brothers lapidary. The prices on what I was ordering where good.
To be honest, I was a little worried about my order after reading some negative posts on this forum. So, here's my honest assessment after getting my order:
After I placed my order, I wanted to add some additional items to my original order that I originally forgot to add. Every time I called, I spoke to Yogi, and he was pleasant to deal with and accommodating. I recieved my order and I'm really pleased.
The only negative issue (which is really not a big deal) is that I was originally told that the order will be shipped on Monday and in fact it got shipped on Wednesday.
All in all, I would definitely order from Johnson brothers again.
I hope this review helps you guys next time you need to make a purchase.
Thanks Sak

Always like to see reviews, good or bad... Thanks for taking the time to post. Hi - Thanks for your comments. The main reason why I posted about Johnson brothers is that many of the posts on this board where negative in regards to Johnson. Specifically, I read one post about how the person couldn't get them on the phone etc. I didn't have any of those problems. At the same time I placed this order with Johnson brothers, I also placed orders with Kingsley & the rock shed. Those transactions where absolutely perfect. I guess I should also point out that I have no affiliation or connection to any of these vendors, other than being a customer. Thanks Sak

The more info the better. Then we can make an informed decision on whom we may wish to patronize...

I have purchased from them at shows and was happy with their pricing. It is good to see that they are listening to customer feedback and have improved their turn time for mail orders. If I recall correctly the main problem people have had with them was their turn time for the "resurfaced" Nova wheels. I prefer expando wheels with diamond belts to Nova style wheels so I have no input on this, but I'm curious as to whether their turn time for these has improved.

Hi Rockoonz - Since there seems to be some interest in this post, I thought it would be appropriate to respond with more details regarding my order. Before I begin, I need to re-iterate, I'm not complaining, in-fact I'm happy with my experience with Johnson (I'm just being anal with details right now so that others can make better informed decisions)... My order included mostly, grits & pellets. Sorry no experience regarding the wheels. As far as the turn times...as I mentioned in my earlier post, the order was supposed to go out on Monday. On Wednesday, I sent Johnson and email asking where my tracking number was. He responded that day with a tracking AND it was shipped that day. The point here is, maybe you just have to be on top of them to make sure they ship quickly (I'm just making an assumption here). Another issue about shipping (again not a deal breaker for me) ...when I placed my order, I gave Johnson 2 shipping addresses, (1 business, 1 residential). I told them to ship to the cheaper of the 2 locations & let me know which one he was going to use. I was under the impression it was going to go to my business address (typically, large/heavy orders ship cheaper to business addresses). Unfortunately, Johnson didn't confirm the shipping location, & to my surprise, the package showed up at my residential address. Again, it's not a big deal, but I was left wondering, if in-fact it would have been cheaper going to my business address. At the end of the day, I think the shipping cost was fine. My shipment was 28 pds, and it was being shipped from the West Coast going to the East Coast. The total shipping costs where $27.97. When I entered the details in the UPS shipping calculator, the cheapest rates I got where about $50. And since we're talking about shipping, I should mention...they did a superb job with the packing. Each item was individually boxed within the larger box & some cushioning was added. Absolutely no damage to my shipment.... Now, you guys have all the details to make a decision.... My decision, I would definitely order again from them. Hope this helps. Thanks. Sak....

I bought some stuff from them in the past, a year or two. I don't remember exactly what I bought, but I do remember that I was happy with it. I know that is vague, but hey, that's how I roll lol

They are open to the public also. I have been there and dealt with them face to face. No complaints here. They have cheap blades in stock usually. You can browse the isles in their small warehouse. The owner is not a rockhound so he doesn't know alot about equipment outside of what he sells but is always willing to engage in a conversation and knows their products well. Friendly guy.

Yep I will be getting a notched and segmented blade for my 16 inch saw... I'm hoping the shipping isnt a whole lot. A few lapidary folks i know buy from them. They have the cheapest rock grit per pound price i have seen thus far (found that out too late but oh well)

I ordered 2 weeks ago also.... Supposedly today they are going to mail the blades and stuff out but i have not recieved the tracking or a message saying that they have yet... I do need the materials and its a rather cheap price but i can wait for a while and hope that there products are good. So far all i can say is they need to work on letting the client know whats happening... Myself as rare as i sell stuff or a service i let the customer know whats happening minimum of 2 days if there is a problem... I was kind of expecting the same from this company.

I placed an order on JB website on Feb.3 for a gyroc motor, belt and some drill burrs. Gave pay info Echeck, and requested confirmation of shipping method before shipment. Waited a few days, then I called and got a recording stating they were out of the office til Feb18. Ski season I imagined. No worries. Called Feb.18, Yogi on phone, says they were @ the Tucson show. Turns out burrs weren't in stock, holding up the rest of the order. 2 weeks til burrs come in. No comm informing me of back order. OK, Fine! Pls delete burrs from order and send the Motor & belt. OK fine. Will ship tomorrow and email confirmation yada, yada. Today 2/21 and still Nada. Their price on the motor was 98.00, anywhere else was $164.00. Amazing the shit folks endure to save a buck, but for me that Buck saved means something. When did these small tumbler motors get so pricey? Ok, rant is over.

You can buy the Gy-Roc motors directly from Graingers if you are willing to cut shaft and mounting screws as needed. The Fasco number is on the motor housing. Manufacture bumped all motors to $200 last year.

The motor I'm getting(?) is 95.00 from JB's. Maybe it's old stock, I don't know. I looked around and couldn't find a motor that was identical- Gy-roc's may be proprietary. I have the model "B" , if that makes any difference.

He buys them at Graingers. He has to cut off the mount screws and shorten shaft. I don't know if he adds the cord or not.

Does it bother anyone else that JB's blade ad shows great prices in large print with small print "prices low as..."? Advertised prices are for 10 or more blades. Also, added charges for credit card purchase. How else would you order from a website? Maybe it is just me. There used to be a company years ago with terrific prices. People would call and want me to match their prices. I would not. Several called back to order after finding out they added a hefty credit card charge, handling charge, and inflated shipping charge.
