Buyer Beware: Attention New and Veteran members. Due to the recent influx of bad sellers/scammers on the forum,it is strongly advised that you do proper vetting of the person you are conducting business with. Find out as much information about the Who,What,Where, and Cost of what you are doing. Also ask yourself...Dose it sound to good to be true? Is this seller active on the forum? Is this their first time posting? Dose anyone (Veteran) on the forum know this person and will vouch for them? Will they do something in good faith to ensure that they are not here to scam you as a buyer? Ask alot of questions and cautious ..We want to believe in the best of people, but again BE CAUTIOUS. That being said.. Sellers Beware: We on the forum appreciate you wanting to do business with us. We have many sellers who have built a good reputation on here. They are also active on the forum and not just here to sell their wares. If you would like to sell to the members it is strongly suggested that you be an active participant .Hang out get to know the people on here. It's not that we don't want to buy /trade from you ,we would like to get to know you first. To many of us the RTH is our second family. If you just want to sell then you might want to try Ebay . If you scam one it is like you have scammed us all.. Quote: " If you want the honey from the hive, Don't tick off the bees'." .....John I copied this from another post..It gives the forum owners input on the 100 post rule ... There is no 100 post rule. Scammers are caught out naturally. Great friendships can be formed over a spot of trading. Some people take a chance and buy, some don't. Most payment processors offer some kind of protection if the transaction complies. My philosophy is along the lines of giving people a chance until they prove they aren't worth it, instead of assuming they aren't worth it from the off. There are exceptions and these are normally fairly obvious. My philosophy isn't for everyone though. I feel that with an individuals common sense in place, the harm:gain ratio falls favourably to the right for both seller and buyer. My two cents:) Thanks Mark for your imput...

Has there really been a large number of bad sellers/scammers recently? Or, is one an "influx"? Of course, it has always been sage advice to look before you leap, but I haven't really noticed any recent surge in scams or intentional deceit here in The Buy Sell and Swap Shop.

Actually, there were three recently. There was the guy who is somehow related to the new scam and there was George. Good advice!

This advice should be one of the "Sticky's" on top of this "The Buy Sell and Swap Shop for Members".

I have been reading regularly on this site since 2007,and joined in 2009. I have never been burned by a first time poster, selling. That is because I never order anything from them.I watch from the sidelines as the story unfolds,at times to the detriment of fellow RTH'ers.
I have noticed that several long time members have tried to warn members in the past, only to get blasted on here by a couple of members.I will not join in issuing warnings ever again,if you jump in to a stranger on the internet its your own fault, and getting burned will cure your urge the next time. Many newer members haven't encountered these scammers before, but they are out there, and this board has seen them.
Hope yall have a nice day!!

I appreciate the heads up on stuff like this! Trying to find equipment and communicate with potential sellers, I am looking at folks on here who have "Mega High star ratings", and they've been on here a while.

Just like everywhere else, you never hear about the people that are trusted and end up being stand up people. Jim
Edited to say: Mattatya is a perfect example. I trusted him and he has proved his worth and thanked me a dozen times. My hat is off to you Matt.

Snuffy I am going to suggest that the old timers whom got blasted weren't blasted for an attempt to "warn members" but instead were blasted for being incredibly rude to new members. This post on the other hand is no rude nor a personal attack on any individual. It is timely, appropriate and correct. There needs to be a fine balance between a warning and being incredibly rude. I know, pot/black... haha

I've been more or less silent on this forum for the last couple of months. One of the reasons is exactly what Snuffy mentioned. I try to warn people, and at the same time try to inform newbie sellers of our unwritten policy of 50 posts first before selling. For doing so, I've been repeatedly blasted by members. So for that reason I have chosen to keep silent when I see a newbie trying to sell within the first few posts. I instead report the person to our mods, and let them handle it.
On several occasions, I have come very close to removing myself from this forum. I'm still on the fence about that. I'm sick and tired of being the punching bag for others on this forum, (mostly newbies themselves).
If my silence means that some of you get burned by newbie sellers, then tough luck. You wouldn't listen when I was trying to warn you. By being burned, maybe you'll learn your lesson.

I admit i joined to trade and sell and share my hobby..I never ever expected to have my character challenged, having to prove myself to unknowns, i admit i was insulted...i mistook everything as a personal attack..I became rude, defensive, and made an azz out of myself...I'M SURE I WAS ONE OF THEM THAT GAVE DON CRAP...Since that time i have got to know a few and follow some..Don your one i like to follow now, your post, your collection, your knowledge, your wisdom on the forum is unmatched. Hope you stick around for a long long time, at least till i get 1000 post then i can apply for the punching bag position.

A warning about something or letting people know that you have had a bad experience with some one is great, but some times it goes past rude! Let people know about the selling but you dont have to bash them over and over especially if you have not had any personal contact with them. I agree everyone needs to get to know you before you start selling unless someone asks if you want to sell something you have posted then go to PM's with that person. Don I love that you and others share your knowledge with us! I have learned a LOT from the members here!

I am sure there has to be a way to put a banner or some short message in front to the new sign ups when they sign up. If it is very short and to the point they may even read it. Jim

Jim Naw, we need do nothing. Really, exactly nothing. If we all do as snuffy and ignore their ads, the real deal folks will hang around for the witty repartee and friendly banter. The scammers will disappear. Profound silence discourages bad behaviour.

I know I've said things that were harsh to our regular members, but I hope people understand that I do not disagree with what they are saying as much as I detest the way it is being said. To sit there and tell someone that we have an unwritten rule of 50 posts before selling....I'm all for it!! To blast the person with rudeness in order to get your point across, no, I disagree with that. I, too, am at the point of not bothering anymore. If we lose potential members because of it, so be it. I've only ever argued for not saying it as an accusation against someone. And to that end I offer this simple advice to anyone thinking about buying from a new seller.....
Ask for the material up front & explain that it is an act of good faith on there part so that good things can be said of them in the forum to others that might be interested. If they refuse, that too says a lot. Ask for $$ up front if they are buying and explain it the same way as above. they have to earn their way into our good graces to become reputable.
That's all I have to say on the matter.... Other that good luck! But please don't attack them, that to me, makes the forum look bad. Wait till they screw up and then let people know about it, to protect others and hopefully shame the person into coming thru with their promise.

As there is no barrier to entry for anyone to join this forum people should not develope a false sense of security when it comes to buying or selling on the forum. All of the rules and well intentioned warnings should not take the place of the age old saying "BUYER BEWARE". As another member stated if the deal sounds to good to be true it probably is. If you do venture into a sale always do it with Paypal. Paypal is your safety net. I beleive you have 45 days to open a case of non delivery. If you do open the case you will get your money back. If you wait beyond the 45 days well that is just foolish.

I am one of the members who was burned by George recently. I searched the forum for previous transactions with him and found positive interactions. It wasn't until people started to get burned by him that others came out to say that they had sour deals with him. If a deal goes south, people need to speak up and post it. I have not been on this forum for some time now because of this transaction and others inaction.

I have to admit I was wrong. I did my damnedest to try to trust everyone and give them a fair shake. In a public setting like this it did not work. This is tough for me to say, not because I hate being wrong (that happens all the time) but it is a sad day that I have to be like the Chinese and not trust anyone, period. It goes against my grain so I will still trust people that I run into face to face but here, where others may also get burned, I need to be cautious.
Living proof that old fools can learn new s..t. Jim

I know I feel a whole lot better buying or trading on RTH than I do in a Facebook group. We are very fortunate to have this great group and our sage advisers too.
