Yup, Mariposite was a low grade gold ore at the Pinetree & Josephine Mine near Bear Valley too.ls at Devil's Gulch where part of an old shaft is still showing with Mariposite in the floors and walls....Mel

Regardless of any gold content, the rock at the top left would make a dynamite sphere if deep enough.
Care to sell it?

Someone here posted a thread awhile back with a small Mariposite sphere they had made. I was surprised that it took a shine as well as it did as "soft" as it is. I was thinkin' that the top left piece would make a good sphere because of the white vein running through it. That piece on the right looks like a heart.

I have a mariposite sphere but can't find the pics. I need to get caught up on my imaging. Mariposite does indeed polish very nicely using the AO from The Rock Shed.

Well that took me awhile, but I knew I had seen one! forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/60793 Deserthound, what are the dimensions on that rock? Is there enough there to make a good sized sphere? I'd love to see a couple more views of it if you are interested in trading it for something. If so, what's it worth to you and what are you looking for?

first off Shotgunner i must say that is one great look sphere you did..very impressive..captbob i think you could get a solid 4" out of it maybe a bit more, it weighed in at 5.64 lbs, it is a super rock with the white stripe being solid all around and thru...if that would be of any use to you let me know we can go from there...when you cut it we split any gold......

I'd love to have it! I was hoping the white band went all the way around. I'm happy to do trades or pay a fair price, as you wish. I HAVE to run right now, but will be back in touch later tonight. A PM with how you want to proceed or what trades you would be interested in works. Do you cab or tumble?
Gotta run! thanks!!

Well then you got yourself a chunk of rock cptbob ..pm your address and i'll get er done...so hows this sound.. i put it into a mfr but it looked lonely, so i threw in two big chunks of obsidian, to tighten up the load and keep the mariposite from getting lonely..you do one of the obsidians for me in exchange for the other and the mariposite..one is rainbow 7.05lbs, other is almost all black with a large spot of brown 5.67lbs. Do the rainbow for me ?

I truly appreciate that you are willing to part with that chunk of mariposite, it's a fine looking specimen.
I do believe that we have a misunderstanding though. I wrote that I thought it would make a nice sphere.
My intention, if I were able to pry it away from you, would be to have it made into a sphere. But, I would send it off to someone that I know to have that done, at a pretty substantial cost.
I've got a fairly extensive rock shop, but I don't have my own sphere machine yet.
I'd love to have the rock, but I would have to pay you for it or trade material. Either is fine with me, although paying would be the most simple.
If you are interested in trading, I really don't need anymore obsidian, I would be interested in other "western" rock specimens if you still needed to fill that box for shipping. Or, just go with a smaller box.
As for trading, mineral specimens I've got! Just what interest you? Would you be looking for tumbling material or slabs for cabbing? Naturally, rough would be easier for me, but what would interest you?
Sodalite (Brazil), Rose quartz (Brazil), Rosetta (Mexico), Tiger eye or tiger iron? My list is close to endless.
The majority of my mineral collection is display specimens. Is there anything specific that you've been looking to add to your collection? I'm not going to be sending a $1,000 pyrite specimen, but I want to make this worth your while as I am coming to you!
Thanks and sorry for any misunderstanding. Bob

I always thought Listwanite had Mariposite as part of it's makeup but was a harder more silicified stone. The Mariposite I've collected is mixed hardness but still pretty soft stuff and I'd kill to be able to get a polish on it as nice as on that sphere.....Mel

hey cptbob i guess i did misunderstand by a long shot...well guess we will have to go with Plan B..i would be interested in some pyrite of equal value... would like to see before sent..i have some agatized mcdermitt wood that is beautiful and takes a polish like glass. i have been polishing the ends and trading them away..

Well, that caught me off guard ! Guess we're even I'm sure I have some pyrite cubes on matrix (from Spain) out there, but I'm gonna have to go digging. Maybe some stand alone pyrite pieces. I'll check. If I'm not limited to pyrite but you want display pieces over rough, let me know. " of equal value" - I'm giving this Mariposite a hundred bucks value because I'm really interested in it. That's almost $20 per pound. Could be a thirty dollar rock, but I want it... is that fair trade value?

okay, I've put together a box which I hope you think makes a good trade. Found a couple pyrites, a pair of rosetta slabs, piece of hematite, cube of galena, septarian "egg", a nice piece of Tampa Bay agatized coral, and a calcite clam piece from Ruck's Pit, (Ft. Drum Fl), some malachite, a nice small natural piece and a little slab, rainbow fluorite, a chunk of banded iron, and a sand calcite from South Dakota. All packed up and ready to mail tomorrow if this works for you.
