I live in a cape style home built in the 50's as homes for returning veterans. About 5 years ago my husband decided to re-do the insulation in our upstairs bedroom (originally an attic) when he was gutting the room he noticed a bunch of blue wood that was on the two far sides as part of the houses original framework, obviously reclaimed wood. He got further along gutting and found this one piece with an image on it, took it down and set it aside. The room is finally ready to be carpeted and i got an appointment for tomorrow so i went up there to get the empty paint cans etc out and sweep and mop it... and stumbled across this board. My heart jumped into my throat! Its an old lock display board from corbin company founded the next town over. I called up the industrial museam in new britain that is full of stuff like this and began telling the woman about it and she was really excited with my find. She asked if i could bring it down for them to look at... I offered her a better deal, i asked her if they wanted it. I dont care about its monetary value, i just want to know it finds a home where it will be treasured as a part of the rich history of the town i was born and raised in and shared with others. Really fascinating place, like stepping back in time. Heres a link to their website: nbindustrial.org/And the board i found:

That would be a good home for that poster. More value in the satisfaction of finding a good home for that. It can not be reproduced.

I definitely have a new found appreciation for the upstairs of my home. The woman at the museum thinks its from the 1930's from the look of it and style of locks displayed but couldn't find anything on it in any of the old catalogues she had. I gave her my email in case she comes across any further info. Its not everyday you find something like this (and in your own home no less) heritage and history isnt something to be hoarded and hidden away, I am more than happy to have donated it

They are diverse in age and materials. Perhaps the most diverse of many sites I have collected. Probably the most diverse of any site in the state of Georgia. The town is about all families raising kids and high on education. I think I am going to donate that collection to them if they have a cultural museum. The developer bought a very large tract of land and did his thing without any archeological studies. I think it was 40,000 acres. I collected on 6 golf courses over a period of 10 years. Over 100 fine classifiable points, and hundreds of not unrecognizable types. The state archeologist would flip out if he saw them. But why should I hoard them to myself ? Hey, they can say 'Collected by jamesp' Who is jamesp??? ha. it is the righteous thing to do though. They were kind enough to let me collect...

Thats really cool james, I bet the cultural museum would love to display those! Also they should put the name of the donater and a little back history of where it was found if its an interesting story on whatever plaque they put up for the display, at least the industrial museum I donated to does. Im all for collecting antiques, im building a reading nook and bought an antique medicine box and a couple books from the 1940's to go on the shelves a couple weeks ago (ill add pics)... but if an organization is actively seeking items, giving back to the town and sharing such rich history with residents id say thats a much better home than my own. Its also one thing to go out and buy an antique, typically they are items that arent extremely rare if they are in my price range. Its completely another to accidentally stumble across an antique especially if its in a place that no one would have expected it to be (ie: the framework of a house lol) without researching the find there is no telling the rarity of the items. Monetary value aside, it could be something that changes perceived notions about the subject and provides historical fact for something that only had speculation. The value in that is priceless. Heres the stuff i bought medicine box from 1897 books from the 1940's

Lmao! I actually avoid antique shops and up until recently ive never had enough money to buy much from them anyways so i dont own a lot of stuff, gloves and scarves mostly. However for the nook i want a very distinct feel for it so i went to the flea market downtown looking for books and a medium sized chest to go under the bench seat. I found the books that fit my perferred genres and didnt find a chest but i did find that box and i couldnt walk away without it. Its small enough it should fit the shelves nicely. 12x12x8 ish, plus i haggled the price down $5. Going tomorrow to this awesome awesome shop (yes thats awesome twice) with my grandma. Ill try to snap a pic inside. Trying to find that elusive chest that wont break the bank. Like a steamer trunk or treasure chest looking thing. Once i find what im looking for i can build the bench seat to fit around it. Got a ton of free pallets from work and spent 3 hours breaking them apart. My husband thinks im nuts lol

I knocked a few spider webs off before clicking If you go in that store the bank account may have insufferable damage.

Ha, if all you did was remove spiderwebs you have a remarkably dust free home.
Like i said i try to stay away from antique shops... and stores in general unless im looking for a specific item. Stick to the list is my shopping motto.
This book nook is going to be a bank buster, between building supplies (nails, screws, sandpaper, stain and varnish) thankfully the wood was free, seat cusion wont be cheap either i gotta make that from scratch due to the shape of the closet, this chest to store my comics, the comics ive had on my want list for quite some time but havent bought because i have no where to store them, the vintage books to give the space that feel and smell, plus lighting... im going to have to put myself out on the corner to afford it. Good thing im figuring this is a long term project to fill the space. Once its built i can take my time with it

Awesome lights! Favorited her shop and look forward to seeing more stuff. Im actually looking into buying lights in old brown or red glass bottles. All ive found so far are mass produced flamless candles in glass bottles. I was going to go searching thru etsy once im closer to buying them

Ps: whats that saying? Ill sleep when im dead. Lol! I figure if i bust my butt to make the perfect spot to just lounge out i might actually do so In all honesty tho ive been having serious issues with finding a spot to craft. (I think i was going thru craft withdrawls and thats why i painted my house lmao) I used to have an entire room for it and since having kids and working on the upstairs my craft room is split between bins in the basement, bins in the dining room and a shelf on the kitchen table. Going to move it all upstairs and finally have a space for myself. Its been much needed and a long time coming so im hauling a$$ to get it done. Hopefully next week it doesnt rain at all and i can start measuring and cutting pallet wood

People that do not want mass produced ones are the ones that buy her lights. Hope your search is successful. Red glass hard to find. Etsy a good source. It is really competitive. .

Yeah ive done quich searches and there are similar ones on etsy. Ive also found old kerosene lanterns that were converted to electric which id like since it woukd provide useful lighting more than ambiance lighting that bottle lamps would provide. Good thing christmas and my birthday are right around the corner lol

I know a guy that makes pallet wood furniture. Does well. Roughsouthhomes on Etsy. He is not selling there much anymore though.

Well not supposed to be an issue but renovations made it one. The upstairs covers the entire length of the house and 5 years and 2 kids later its still vacant. The insulation was horrendous so we moved our bedroom into the dining room and while hubby was laid off he started removing the drywall and insulation and put all new stuff up and painted it. He only had the trimwork left to do when he went back to working crazy hours that conflicted with his fathers schedule (he was helping) so there the room sat unfinished allowing the rest of the house that was already out of order to get more chaotic as time went on.
About a month ago i had finally had enough of the mess and when he got laid off for a week we had a long discussion and i got him to finish it. Now he is back to work and in about 2 days i finished painting the trim work (finished that today, i didnt waste any time) carpet is installed, now we just need to move furniture up there. Hopefully over the weekend. Then my entire house is getting a much needed over haul. I already cleaned out the junk in the basement and called bulk pickup to come get it. Im going to redo a room in the basement to be a walk in closet once my craft stuff is out of the bins that are stored in there. I already have the dressers down there and railings hung on the rafters we just need to rearrange the snake tanks since theyve passed and itll give us more functional space.
Ive seen some amazing pallet furnite... hubby still thinks im crazy for attempting it but if i can turn an old fence into picture frames i think i can make stacking crates into a bookshelf from pallets. The tricky part is the ceiling is sloped so i gotta bevel the ends just right so it sits flush against the walls... good thing i have an unlimited supply of pallets lol
