wow... I have a suggestion for what white text means ... If you ask why they are selling:
comes up with different stories every time or just needs the money.
Has too much of it, needs to clear out space, financially burdened, to get other material Those sound like pretty good reasons to sell to me. Other things to consider are: are they willing to share info about there lives with you (having a good rock hound chat) or are they just in it for the business. Also see if they are willing to swap material if you don't like something. You start asking for info about my life and you will never hear from me again. Some people sell because ... wait for it ... they make money doing so. They are not looking for new BFFs. Crazy world, eh?

Not the point I was meaning but I fixed it to better reflect what I was trying to get across (I think) In reference about peoples rockhounding lives i'm simply saying like people posing the question "find / buy anything interesting lately?" I'm not meaning some long personal private life chat. Any rock shop you ask that question at will be willing to tell along with people... and if its a shop they may try to sell something to you. As for the first quote you excerpted i'm talking about the green is good and red is bad... I have had one person try to sell me something saying "it was my grandmothers one day and the next day saying it was their brothers" Also when people say "I just need the money" I sometimes think tht the people are needing money to buy drugs or something.

red bad green good - got that part.
"just needs the money" is a fine reason to sell something.
They have an item which they want to sell ... for money. They would like for it to be your money, but probably don't really care as long as someone buys it.
Wal*Mart has stores full of sh*t to sell because they "just need the money"
Called Capitalism (this is different from "give me free sh*t") and works the world over.
What the seller does with the money ain't your business. BUT, if you are worried about that - don't buy from them. (they won't care)

However if they are people that do drugs it is possible the item could be stolen which would not be good.

Pixies are mean tricky minded creatures. They ride my horses and put what we call Pixie braids in the horses mane and tail. The braids are twisted and snarled messes that seem to appear overnite and require a lot of effort to untangle without creating a gap in the horses mane! Don't like Pixies, just dont like them atall!

Glenn is saying he would rather deal with friendly respectable people compared to people just looking to make a buck which in some cases can be rude and dishonest.

A tight knit community such as this forum is the exception rather than the rule. One can get a feel for a seller is this type environment. That's why the newbies have such trouble selling here.
I'm saying that when looking online to purchase rocks, all I can go on is the quality of the material and the track record for delivering what is advertized in a timely manner. I have no idea if the seller beats his dog or how he spends his money. That's just not part of my buying process.
If they are selling "to make a buck", and I am happy with what they are charging for their product, we can do business. More power to 'em. Kinda hard to stay in business if you're NOT making a profit. I'm not looking for a new BFF when rock shopping. And, with a few exceptions, I would justa soon the relationship ends with the completed transaction.
YMMV

I'd like to add; there is also a huge downside to buying from "friends". It's kinda hard to complain about what ya get in a trade or sale when the trader/seller is a known identity. Over my many years here, I've received rocks that I wouldn't throw out in my yard. I'm talking boxes of crap that I have actually thrown straight in my garbage can. Did I ever complain? No. I say that I received the material and thank you. Then never do business with the person again. In a situation where I am buying online, say eBay or an online rock shop, I have a right to complain if the material was short of what was depicted. I'll take Grumpy Gus and his quality rocks at what I consider to be a fair price over the forum favorite sending me his crap rocks any day. I can bitch with Grumpy Gus if not satisfied. The Traveling Rock Box became a good example of this. NONE of this had a darn thing to do with the thread topic, and I'm done bumping this thread over threads where folks are actually trying to sell something. just

I read alot about the newbie seller, being one at one time.. this is just my personal experiences: i have had great luck with newbie sellers, the buyers are who have burned me, i for that reason i dont sell online...now the traders are hit and miss sometimes you get junk, sometimes you get gold...james and keith and roy all give up gold..and tony is the best..i really dont think a fail safe can ever be found. It will always be a never ending battle to keep the uglies out of the forum, as a group you can apply that pressure. i guess the ole saying buyer beware..well it goes both ways, seller beware also....anyways thats my 2 cents worth.take it with a grain of salt and you'll be ok .

A successful seller, will be friendly and respect people. For me, I don't care the motive of the seller. As long as the deal is good and we both win, I am a happy man. Rude sellers no matter their motive can move along to the next industry to be rude in.

One thing that I do on forums if I am going to buy something from members with a lot or a little post count is feel the person out and get to know them. Here is some instances which can help identify a scammer easily in my experience. These are questions I ask before even talking about about the Items. red text = possible scammer
Green text = possibly a good dealIf you ask why they are selling:
comes up with different stories every time or just "needs" the money.
Has too much of it, needs to clear out space, financially burdened, for profit, to get other material
If you ask for pictures of exactly what you will be getting:
can't provide clear pictures or any pictures at all
provides clear pictures, a lot of pictures
Other things to consider are: are they willing to share it here rockhounding stories with you or are they just in it for the business (buying to resell). Also see if they are willing to swap material if you don't like something.
I have had plenty of people that were in the red from that may have had something nice but that couldn't provide clear pictures or could not keep the same story. These were people I did not buy from (they were not on here).
I also had a few people that I bout from that I will buy from again If they decide to sell more rock, one person in particular on here that I will buy from again is Donnie.
If you see this Donnie I thank you again and look forward to seeing your next box if your still cleaning.
but i really do have to much rock and need to sell some to buy more ! that just makes me a rockohollic lol!

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS MEMBER. (purplpixie) She kept promising to send my box. She finally sent it 3 hours after I filed a paypal dispute (1 month after I had paid). She tried very hard to get me to close the dispute after she sent me a picture of the tracking number. I know from experience you cannot reopen a dispute once you have closed it so I told her I would close it after I check out the Bruneau. I paid for 40 lbs of Bruneau jasper with orbs and got 33 lbs of junk rock. I have escalated my paypal dispute to try to get a refund. Tony Tony what happened? ? Did you get your money refunded or received a better/newer shipment from Kelley? ?? I have filed a complaint with PP and have until 12/12 to file further charges for money back but she has sent me another box of material which I should receive this Thursday. I'll wait and see what's in the box before escalating the complaint. 39don

Paypal is still reviewing the case. She sent an answer to their inquiry but I was not allowed to see what it was. I will probably have to pay to send the junk rock back before they issue a refund but I am still waiting to see what they say.
She told me she had sent out 7 boxes of the Bruneau and no one had been unhappy with their purchase. That was a blatant lie so I am not interested in any more shipments from her.

Tony The only time I was scammed that Is exactly what I was told... if true the people were probably not buying from her again or just didn't know. This was not on here and probably not the same person.

If she just wants to get rid of the stuff I'd take it for free as it would just be going in the garden of rocks (pile in the woods) Just joking of course, If I was to ever get something like this though I would probably use it to practice flint knapping or possibly tumbling. I hope pay pal is on your side as it usually is Tony and others who are going through paypal

glennz01, that's what I was thinking about the bruneau. I think it would look great as arrowheads. Id like to have a bunch of practice before I used it though.

Yeah, Practice is what the purple person sent out by the looks of it. The only material that can be knapped locally can only be done via percussion, although can make nice cabs also
