Hint, for obsidian, go with the higher dollar tin oxide for a polish. That seems to be the final polish I always get the best results with. Forget who here told me about that, but when tried the tin oxide instead of my usual AO, it made a world of difference in my results.....Mel

Obsidian will be a fast tumble for the contest. I am looking forward to it. The last couple years have been brutally crushed agates. I have mixed reaction to using obsidian for the contest due to the fact that it is so common. Seems hard to police people to using the 3 pounds that are shipped to them?

Maybe they'll irradiate the 3 pounds to track what's what?? LOL.
Mel - tin oxide is all I use, so works out for me.

I'm on the fence about entering. With only 3# of material I'm afraid it would get lost in my UV18 if mixed with other ob. Maybe I can run it with a bunch of marbles or something. Don't want to break the rules. Will make my decision in a couple days, application printed and waiting to be sent.

That way I can keep it full without mixing obsidian.

Don't know about giving Chuck a run, but I'm excited to try obsidian for the first time!

This is like a bad dream Jan. 'The Fraternal Order of Obsidianites' will revel in their brilliant reflections

Ha Chuck! With all the beautiful obsidian RTH turns out, I'll be very surprised if we don't get at least 2 of the top 4 spots. Hopefully a sweep!

Still a bit early to be running a tumbler in the garage in NE Ohio, but I didn't want to wait anymore.
Got a few large chunks of my own obsidian in with what I was sent, so no chance of mixing up with the small stuff. Rather than buying colored glass, I'm using busted up marble as filler. Got the broken pieces from a trophy shop for free!!
Anyone else rolling yet?

Already done. I'll have to freshen them up when it's time to send them in. Less then 30 days from start to finish on this batch. Obsidian does not present a time challenge in the first stage like most rocks. The Brazilian agates I submitted last year took a full 4 months to complete.

Rolling mine but have made some errors .... Chipped up larger pieces when slurry over thickened with borax .... frosted larger pieces when volume got too low .... Looking better now, frosting gone, chips nearly ground out, some ready to move on. Funny I should be having issues with the rough grind. Most have issues with finishing steps, no?
