Never seen chicken track with such nice, clean colors or pattern. By the way, a rock shop has a bunch of chicken track available here in Glendale, AZ (or maybe it's Peoria). I'd say a couple of hundred pounds or so, at least they had it the last few times I went in there. Anyway, their rough is usually $3 a pound for most of their rocks. I might have to pick some up. trust me its chicken track there were some that was more color out there just not alot

Got a question about all these different varieties...
While some pieces are vastly different, many look darn near the same.
I have some Wild Horse that looks pretty much like Cripple Creek, which can look a lot like some material from Succor Creek, which kinda looks like ...
"Picture Jasper" seems to be a huge blanket term for dozens (hundreds?) of different types of material from a rather large area. Many other rock types, such as many California jaspers & agates, have names seemingly given them by the person selling the stuff.
Are you simply using the name given to the rock by the seller? Which someone else is calling something else? Not like this stuff can be DNA tested for coming from a specific locale. And even knowing where it is from doesn't mean that different folks don't have different names for the same rock.
I guess my question is: how do you know what's what? My Wild Horse vs Cripple Creek is a good example of this question. They look the same!
Question #2 Hans Gamma is supposed to be coming out with an updated picture jasper book in "early 2015". Anyone know any more on if/when this is coming out? I can't find a good (new) copy of the original release, so I'm waiting for the new printing.

Excellent questions, captbob! I've wondered the same. Do you have Mr. Ron Gibbs' book, "Agates and Jaspers?" jakesrocks, I really like your banded Wild Horse material! Very unusual Chicken Track jasper slab, megalotis. It looks as if Owyhee and Chicken Track may have had a one-night stand. Very pretty slabs you cut, Fossilman!

Bob, I'm no expert on the subject. A lot comes down to finding a few sellers who know their picture jaspers, and can be trusted.
I'm waiting on Hans Gamma's new book too. I check his web site almost daily, to see if the new books are on sale. I'm hoping to get an autographed copy. I managed to get his first book just before it went out of print.
Jan, wait until you see the black cloud Owyhee picture jasper that's coming today. Pretty wild looking stuff. I'm told it comes from a lower level seam, below the original Owyhee picture jasper seam.

Excellent questions, captbob! I've wondered the same. Do you have Mr. Ron Gibbs' book, "Agates and Jaspers?" Don't have that book Jan. Was looking to get it and saw more than one review saying that the book itself falls apart in a quickness. Hard to justify a buck fifty for a book that won't hold up to multiple readings. Looks like good info, just kinda hope there is another printing. ETA: I also really like that banded Wild Horse Don! You finding most of this stuff on eBay? (don't worry, I'm hunting a different material this month - Indian Paint) mostly did just hit this one today: I like my rocks big! www.ebay.com/itm/121594590390?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

jakesrocks, will be looking forward to seeing your black cloud Owyhee!! Have you had any free time to polish any of your slabs or cut rough? I hope they will reprint the Agates and Jaspers book, too. Noticed the prices for the book listed on evilbay since Mr. Ron passed away, captbob. I have a copy of it that he signed for me. The book was around 40 bucks then. His website is online and it has a treasure trove of information on it. theimage.com

jakesrocks, will be looking forward to seeing your black cloud Owyhee!! Have you had any free time to polish any of your slabs or cut rough? Jan, after mamma's surgery I barely have time to sleep. I'll begin cutting slabs and polishing the best slabs I already have as soon as she's able to help herself to do a few things. I just got a new polish pad for my little vibrolap. Most slabs are pretty smooth already, so won't take very much lapping.

The black cloud was a bargain at whatever price you paid! It is hard being a rock addict!

Got it cheaper than I thought I would. 4-1/4 lb chunk for $20.50. It has a couple cracks in the top black area, but should still get some nice slabs out of it.

That's a beauty, Don, and you purchased it for a very nice price! I see some gray clouds in it. Were you giving it a drink of water? J/K. I hope Mamma jakesrocks' knee is healing well and she is able to get around without any assistance soon. ((you have muchos picture jaspers to cut, slab, polish, and cab)) Does she have edema in her knee?

((you have muchos picture jaspers to cut, slab, polish, and cab)) Does she have edema in her knee? Actually, I took the pic wet to show the colors. Mamma had a full knee replacement. She's starting to walk better, (with a walker), but still can't get up off the toilet by herself, and needs help getting in and out of her car. Supposed to hit the low 60's tomorrow. If mamma's meds knock her out, I may drag the saw out and cut a slab or two. That is if I don't fall asleep too. I'm exhausted from having to help her all hours of the day and night. Been running on coffee, (lots of coffee), and about 4 hours of sleep in every 24. Even missed a bid tonight because I dozed off in my recliner.

I hope you are able to get some much-needed rest, Don. Please take care of You, too. The pretty picture jaspers can wait.

LOL. I'm off to get some sleep right now Jan. Mamma's meds just kicked in. Should be able to get at least 2 hours. If she wakes up and needs me, my alarm (Jake) will wake me. Every time mamma calls for me, he comes running down the hallway barking.

Have a good one, Don! You can count picture japsers instead of sheep to help you fall asleep faster. On second thought, counting (or thinking about) picture jaspers may not be a good idea.
