An experiment from a stone I collected from my stroll through the Phoenix barrio. It just small tumbler stone but that green really got my eye. Its way different for Phoenix rock. So I was wondering how deep that green goes? Just did a small window polishing. It jasper hard & underneath that green is a nice bluish color. Sort of larimarish hue. Of course the picture lacks in showing it off. bright sun! But its unique stone for the area Thanks for taking this stroll with me Ed ™

Very interesting rock, mohs. Took me on a stroll with the name for it, Ed. Had to look up 'barrio,' which means "neighborhood," so I am going to guess that you found it close to your home? What is the dendritic slab that your barrio stone is sitting on?

O jan you get me into the history of Phoenix The barrio that I'm referring to is section of vacant land about 100 acres (next to my workplace and not far from my residence). The section was once where the Hispanic barrio was . Separated from the told Phoenix town site of 1870's . The two areas grew up together. In the the 1970's Phoenix & Sky Harbor airport acquisitioned the land to expand & build freeways. So the land sits on huge & Vacant lot. EXCEPT there is this huge well preserved Church located on it. I think the Hispanic community made the City of Phoenix preserve the building . I ts really quite a sight. I'll get a picture sometime. Anyway I stroll this vacant lot on my breaks at work picking up stones, building cairns and basically looking for artifacts. Because a large community did live there for 100 years. Its also the adjacent to Jacob Waltz's land. So I figure that ol'codger might have dropped some gold bearing quartz on his trek back from the Superstition Mountains. Its a theory. The blue dentritic slab is what I like to use for one of my most popular combos with green moss. Ed ™

Heres a project I found this rock in the Barrio cut in half A figured it would make a nice commemorative heart to the Sacred Heart Church Its a major project and much more difficult if I don't have an even slab Would anyone have a brilliant efficient way to grind the heel side flat ? Thanks Ed

Wow, that'll make a beautiful heart, Ed, and very thoughtful of you to make it in honor of the church.
Not sure what to suggest to you about removing the material from the heel, especially on grinding wheels (no fun), but have confidence you'll be able to do it. Could you use the rounded area of the heel as part of the dome of your rockin' heart? Doing bottoms of cabs are one reason a flat lap is on the maybe one day we'll get one list.

Here's a pic of the heel side of the heart Partial flatting of the heel and profiling. So far ...all the work been done on S/C wheel on the cabber. Plus rough sawing on the tile saw. It looks like a real butchering job out there. Blood on the cabber. Red everywhere. The 2 angel wings have lot more grinding to be done . Lots! Unfortunately I have to shut down the operation. I just called my Mom & both her & sis have some sort of flu bug, UUUGGHH! Mom was up all night with sis vomiting. Real serious. I think they both ate something unagreeable. Hope that all it is. So I need to go over and do some heart work Ed

Thanks for the inquiry & concern Jan !!! Not sure if it was food poising of just some sort of bug? I stayed late last night. Took care of my sis getting her in out of bed, made some buttered noodles, which sis ate, and helped my Mom. She had the damn dry heaves! This is real concerning with her hernia. Anyway they had pretty peaceful night and were feeling much better this morning. I'm not sure what both of them got into that caused the same reaction? one day at a time Thanks gingerkid©

Thanks for sharing, and that's good news to hear. Dry heaves sounds terrible, mohs™.

Here’s the project after considerable more profile grinding. What I’m trying to show on the heel side is some of the inherent problem. There no way I can lap it flat enough to get that natural crease out in the stone. If I did the slab would be to thin. In theory the heel is flat enough that I could epoxy the halves together and fix what ever unevenness out in the doming process. But the heart still as lots of grinding to be done before it ready to be joined… O everything fine gingerkid ©

Thanks Jan I don’t expect any taker on the CL ad and I’m surprised no one on RTH does surface grinding But they are big heavy expensive Yet if I want to be productive on the rock’n hearts to make a set of them say of birthstone hearts I’ll have to invest in that I did make good progress on the heart profile and the flats today just needs a little more tweaking and get the groove zipped I need to buy a groove bit for my Gryphon they want $25.00 for it at this shop here in Phoenix that a bit expensive-- but convenient. I can zip the groove with my dremel I like to put the groove in after I have the flat it pretty good then I can finesse grind the rest that way I’m grinding less rock in the middle it really helps with the process

mohs™, how do you zip the groove with your dremel? Yep, I agree with you that 25 bucks is a lot of money to pay for a Gryphon bit, but like you said, it is convenient to be able to purchase it locally.
