Economic impacts on the U.S. of an extended drought out west may be coming up soon. May not be so regional.

Scientists Are Coming Up With 'Last Ditch' Remedies for Climate Change Richard Branson, the billionaire chairman of Virgin Group Ltd., has offered a $25 million prize for the best solution in the field known as geoengineering. Smart Stones: www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-08/carbon-sucking-gems-among-last-ditch-climate-change-remediesSmart Stones, based in the Netherlands, is working with olivine, a yellow-green mineral found abundantly in the earth’s crust. Once a favorite of Egyptian jewelery makers, olivine absorbs CO2 as it weathers. The idea is to mine olivine, crush it and scatter it over land. A ton of olivine can capture about a ton of CO2. Cost estimates range from 3 pounds to 41 pounds ($4.60 to $63) a ton. “I could make sure that every year as much CO2 is absorbed by this method as is emitted by humans,” he said. That's some pretty funny stuff right there! Richard Branson is a d-bag of the highest magnitude. uh... how is this olivine supposed to be acquired, crushed and spread about? They wouldn't have to use air polluting machinery throughout this entire process would they? The solution creates more of the problem than it solves. Absolutely Brilliant!

Precipitation is selective. Rain in some places, dries up others. Position of jet stream often dries Georgia and dumps on Texas. Vice versa. Changed a 5 year drought in a month.

Ha, 3 to 5 to 7 year wet/dry cycles in Florida create variable shoreline conditions on interior lakes. Many a sucker has bought waterfront property when you could drive to the dock in your back yard. Other times the water is 100 yards out. A lot of lakes outside the Ocala National Forest. Most oscillate with dry/wet conditions. Many have development.

No welfare, food stamps or free housing for that horse. He earned all he has coming by working hard and winning.
OBVIOUSLY NOT a Democrat!

Do y'all remember when Japan did cloud seeding to stop the rain at the Olympics? There's a website that spiritstone may know that has information about cloud seeding. Wonder if they could do something to produce rain? Might not be a good idea to mess with Maw Nature though. Too bad American Pharoah is going to make a killing with his offspring and won't even know it or get to spend any of it.

I believe it is not allowed to use frozen in the horse biz, gotta do a natural breeding. Frozen can be used in the dog biz though.

california farms people for it's revenue. born and raised in northern cal. although I think the line for northern ca. should be above sacramento! we used to farm everywhere, living in extreme northern ca. we do not have too bad of a drought in some areas, and others it's bad! look at google earth live and see eagle lake, or shasta dam oroville dam too. it will all come back we hope. where we live we have a well, so joker jerry brown is going to build two dams to watter so. ca. and put meeters on our wells to pay for thier water, if I was not born and raised/and have precious family I would move to alaska! even if they hate californians. from spending time in new england in the 80's plastering pools, I found out all californians had blue eyes, blonde hair, surfed, and lived on the beach. well I havent lived below 4300 foot in over 23 years! the north valley is not the same place we all grew up in. big city is coming to your town soon! I dig obsidian!

Long drought + ice pack issues + over population + water use issues I think that sums it up. I suppose farming will be gradually terminated if it continues. About the only solution unless they pursue alternate water source. "The cities continue to grow and grow and grow … Why should I suffer for their sprawl? Bill Trampe, Colorado Farmer" Looks like a war to me. Bet the south will win this one.

*LOL* The one thing that dipsh*t governor moonbeam don't get is you can't stop farming unless you want folks to stop eating. You need to stop encouraging population growth and development by limiting immigration and building permits for new homes, like many drier areas do. You need to prioritize food production over city landscaping, freeway plantings and home lawns etc even if it discourages population growth. I worked with Aussie farmers for awhile one time and Aussies understand this.
And you know what else, at some point in time folks are have going to have to address population growth, period. This current trend of everyone wanting big families and everyone cranking out kids is freaking ridiculous. The planet has a carrying capacity for gull danged destructive humans and we've already way exceeded it to the point where we are destroying our own environment by our very numbers. Gulldanged breeders need to learn how to use birth control before we become like in the movie Soylent Green and have to start eating people. I really cannot believe what dumbasses a lot of humans are and as I get older, there seem to be more and more of these dumbasses too *L*....Mel

The Australians have been there done this eh ? It has a gigantic desert. And probably not many gas stations to make it to the next glass of water. Thought provoking situation. The shear mass of people in the SW presents issues Australia never faced. Guessing homesteaders figured out the desert long before it became an LA. Common sense used. The trap created by the drought in the SW is precarious man made manipulation of water and marketing development to desirable ocean fronts, natural beauty, casinos, etc. With a massive response of settlers over many years. Only a few percent of such a massive settlement running out of water will sure be more than a squeaking wheel. The water shortage can ramp up exponentially if it continues. Going from a huge demand to being cutoff in a hurry is unforgiving at best. Food shortage much more forgiving than water shortage. Driving from Alpine TX to Zapata TX during the worst of the Texas drought a few years ago in the summer. To many deer, wild pigs and cows dried up laying around and too few gas stations for this easterner. Instinct on full alert. Prefer gators and moccasins personally. They consume far less mammals than that drought.

The people that know it all in China lifted the one child rule because it worked so well. haha The small city I was in (only 3-4 million) has so many people packed into a small space it is almost like an ant hill you kicked the top off of.
Talking with ladies in South America and Eastern Europe and 90 percent of them want a big family with many children. Most people don't have a clue how bad the overpopulation is and it doesn't look like anyone is really trying to educate them. Women have the natural drive to have babies and men have the drive to stick it in them and damn the cost.
Then there is the debate about abortion where one side wants to outlaw it completely but then cut the food stamps that feeds them. I guess starving to death is okay but anything else is out of the question.
Maybe we could teach the older children while they are still in school so they will make better life choices. hahaha Most of them do not have a clue how to balance a checkbook or make the money last three days past the next payday instead of three days before.
Okay, I did not solve anything. NEXT Jim

No problem if they limited the population via building permits. Must be doable. You guys out that way have a paradise and that may be what cuts the throat in the end due to the appeal. Don't you think that the wealthy politicians knew about the water arrangements and proceeded ahead. Probably moved down to Florida and have a 100GPM artesian well in their back yard laughing on the way to the bank to re-stack $ daily. People are concerned enough to begin getting uncomfortable at this point. No way to live having water shortage glooming.

Over population effects all- fuel/water/food/space. More(greedy) people to fight over the remaining resources. oh no

Agree, overpopulation the largest part of the problem. State/government regs next on the list, along with waste and just plain ol' lack of rain/snow.
Did you hear about this?
So, in their infinite wisdom, the govt wants to control all sources of water, like they know best. "To protect it" they say... Bullsh!t! They (read: DEMS) just want more control of everything, take control out of the hands of private citizens. Watch out James, Big Brother wants to be able to tell you how to run your life and business. DON'T TRUST THE GOVERNMENT!!!
