Curious....." Everything seemed to be going good until the polish stage" This appears to be a recurring theme especially for me and the Loto. Don't really have this problem with Lakers (hard) but with most other rocks including Rios I do.

These are from Little Girls Point in the U.P. on Lake Michigan. It's a 4 hour trip one way for us. We have been up there about 4 times and really enjoy it. Family usually spends the day picking rocks and playing in the water. It's a very popular rock picking place so you really have to dig through the rocks. I don't really know what I'm looking for other than "cool" looking rocks. Quickly found out quartz doesn't tumble well and the black looking rocks don't either.

That's a great looking batch. I like the red and green striped rock a little right of center in the first photo. I did one very similar that was from Lake Superior.
Your problem with the last stages in the Lot-O is more about the rocks than the tumbler. The softer minerals are wearing away faster than the harder ones. Some of those are granite. That's why I try to avoid picking them up. They always look good until the end.

I meant to say granite instead of quartz in my above post. Thanks for the compliments everyone. I think I will remove the "problem" rocks and put the rocks that didn't quite get a good polish on them back in the Lot-O. Here is a panoramic view:

thought those looked like Michigan rocks! Great shine, nice variety. Looks like a fun place to get tumbling sized rocks. So many rocks so little time!

I was intrigued to hear that you found these in the U.P. on Lake Michigan because I never really see any posted from that area. I did a quick search for little girls point and all I came up with was a county park on Lake Superior near the Michigan/Wisconsin border. Was that a typo or were these from a different park then the one I found in my search? Thanks Chuck

And I might add, that sometimes at the very last stage a rock will fracture out a piece and that dang little rough piece or the rough edge of the big piece will ruin the batch. It is amazing how such a tiny sharp piece can ruin a shine. So it is best to remove anything that looks like it might break apart before you run the last stage or two. Those are some dang good shines you got though!

Some really nice finds you got there and a super shine. I guess because they are beach finds that they have been smooth out a bit by Mother Nature.

Well gosh, they look about perfect to me! The Washington beach rocks I've tumbled always had a few that would never quite "work". Then again, I never really took the time to pick through 'em to take out the potential troublemakers!

They do have camping spots available. It is probably 10-15 miles north of the WI border. Your GoogleFu is right on. If you type in Little Girls Point in Yahoo and look at the Image Results, they are all of Little Girls Point. It's definitely a rock beach.

Those are some dang good shines you got though! That was indeed the problem. I had put these stones through the rough stage time after time until there were no flaws in the rocks. Not even a fracture. Get to the last stage and things went haywire on some of them. I'll cull out the trouble makers and put the one's that didn't get a great shine through the last stage or two. I think next lot I work through the Lot-O I will have to look at putting in some sort of thickner to see if that would help.

These are some of the nicest polished beach rocks I have seen. Love the yellow/orange one!
Thanks for posting. Ian
