Actually the female lions do the killing. The males basically fight each other for the females eat the food the females provide and make baby lions.

The best thing that could have happened to that game park. Since the death of the lion. The park has raised over £300,000 in donations. But tens of thousands of poverty stricken people starve in that country. But no one seems to care about them!! www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-33734879

It has been shocking how some have reacted to Cecil the lion's death, especially with the influence of the internet, such as social media. The donations were given to the research center that had been tracking Cecil's (and other lions) movements for the past 8 years. People can and do support more than one cause or issue, such as starvation in the world. There's also live wildlife web cams that many people enjoy watching. I watch the Atlanta Zoo' panda cubs that just turned 2 years old. A couple of years ago, I looked for famous racehorse champion, Cigar, at the Kentucky Horse Park in the paddock, but only caught a glimpse of him once. There was also the eagle nest that I enjoyed watching. If there is a live cam at the park where Cecil and his pride live, I do not know, but I do not believe there is one. Here's a post with several wildlife cams that a few of us enjoy on the opal forum. www.opalholicsanonymous.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=103Is anyone watching the "Zoo" television series based on the James Patterson novel by the same name? I read the book but the tv show is not anything like it. It will make you think... ETA - There was a guy that shot a Florida panther in LaGrange, GA (where we live) near West Point Lake and was taken to the cleaners. www.fws.gov/southeast/news/2011/11-057.htmlJust remember not to tick off the internet. (just kidding)

1. The gov. sold him a hunting licence for lions. 2. The animal was shot outside the park boundaries. The lion was shot illegally. This is not the first time the dentist has been in trouble for illegal hunting. bushmanbilly, from what I've read on the park's website, the lion was killed on a farm and the owner did not have a quota to kill lions on his land. Do you know if they were spotlighting, or was the animal killed in daylight? "Ladies and gentlemen, on the 7th of July 2015 after receiving a tip-off, our law enforcement officers immediately started investigating the matter and discovered that on the 1st of July 2015, this lion was illegally killed by Dr Walter Palmer, a United States of America national and Theo Bronkhorst, a professional hunter with Bushman Safaris on Antoinette farm in Gwayi River Conservancy. The lion had a fitted GPS satellite collar as part of current research efforts being done in Hwange National Park and its surrounding areas. The lion was well known and regularly sighted by tourists. Mr Honest Trymore Ndlovu owner of Antoinette farm was issued with a hunting quota for 2015 which excluded lions. Antoinette Farm is located in Gwayi River Conservancy in the Hwange Rural District and is adjacent to Hwange National Park. The professional hunter is alleged to have connived with the Antoinette land owner to kill the lion. The incident came to the attention of the Authority on the 7th of July 2015 through an informer. This was followed by an investigation which clearly demonstrated that the illegal killing was deliberate. Firstly the land owner was not allocated a lion on his hunting quota for 2015. Secondly, the use of a bow and an arrow was meant to conceal the illegal hunt by using a means that would not alert the rangers on patrol. Execution of the illegal hunt violated a number of provisions of the Parks and Wildlife Act. The professional hunter violated Section 66 of the Act which regulates the manner in which trophy hunts are conducted. Both the client, Dr Palmer and the professional hunter violated Section 123 of the Act which controls the use of bow and arrow for hunting. The client also violated the Act through financing an illegal hunt. The land owner violated Section 59 of the Act which controls hunting on private land in that he allowed a hunt to be conduct without quota and necessary permit."www.zimparks.org/index.php/mc/214-press-statement-on-the-illegal-hunt-of-a-collared-lion-at-antoinette-farm-in-gwayi-conservancy-hwange-district-on-1-july-2015-by-bushman-safaris-professional-hunter-theo-bronkhorst

Cecil led two prides containing six lionesses and 12 cubs along with another lion called Jericho.
Following his death, his own six cubs will be killed as the new lion who takes over the pride will not allow them to live, conservationists say. Been a month. Haven’t heard how that turned out yet.

Definitely an eye opener. I understand Hippos do the same thing.

parfive, don't know if there's any truth behind it, but I read that Cecil's brother is caring for the cubs. I think that one of the major concerns with lion conservation and Cecil's death is that another male will take over Cecil's pride and kill his cubs which decreases the lion population. Didn't know that about hippos either, spiritstone. Watched a show one time about a hippo, and a couple would allow the hippo to come into their home. Craziness.

Normal occurrence in the lion society. Why does anyone care that it happened THIS TIME??

I think Cecil's death has brought some very alarming threats to the dentist via social media and the internet, but has also brought some positives as far as bringing the importance of conservation, poaching, and research to light. The weeks before it was Caitlyn Jenner and the removal of confederate symbols. Who knows what will be next.

Both social media and the progressive mainstream media have been in an uproar over the past few days about the death of “Cecil,” a 13-year-old lion in Zimbabwe. Cecil was killed in an organized licensed hunt by a big game hunter, Minnesota dentist Dr. Walter Palmer, who has now gone into hiding after receiving numerous death threats from outraged animal rights activists. However, it would appear that the outrage surrounding the death of Cecil is what is commonly known as a “First World Problem,” as residents of Zimbabwe were mostly unaware of, and really don’t care about, the death of just another lion. “What lion?” was the response of acting Information Minister Prisca Mupfumira, after being asked about the death of Cecil. Though the government had yet to give an official response to the lion hunt, local authorities opened an investigation into whether the professional guides who led the hunt abided by the rules and regulations in place for such things.
According to Yahoo News, that hasn’t stopped angry animal rights and anti-hunting activists from ruining the life of Dr. Palmer, with some calling for his arrest, extradition and even death for hunting the lion with a bow and arrow and finishing it off with a gun. But most people in Zimbabwe don’t care about the dead lion, as they have much greater problems to deal with, such as an 80 percent unemployment rate, insane monetary inflation and a hugely corrupt government. The truth is, most locals in Zimbabwe actually look forward to the big game hunts that Westerners engage in, as the high price tag for the hunts means money pumped into the local economy, not to mention the meat from such hunts is required by law to be given to local tribes and villages.“Why are the Americans more concerned than us?” said Joseph Mabuwa, a 33-year-old father of two. “We never hear them speak out when villagers are killed by lions and elephants in Hwange.” conservativetribune.com/zimbabwe-truth-cecil-the-lion/

That's good to know. I'm not anti hunting, by any means. Mostly, I think it's good news because I hated to think of there being copy cat killers out there looking for their 15 infamous minutes. I hate to see these animals, and especially elephants, killed illegally. What happened to Cecil was beyond horrible and reprehensible. However, I don't think it rises to the level of selling dead baby parts. Which I think was the original point to the post.

bushmanbilly, I read the comments that the Information Minister commented about 'what lion.' Cecil the lion, named after Cecil Rhodes (De Beers) was a favorite amongst tourist, the park, and played a very important role in lion conservation since he was followed since he was a cub. Cecil is not the first animal to be loved by the public and have a huge following, nor will he be the last. Thanks to social media and the internet, his death was made aware to the public, and then the media outlets went haywire. I do think the dentist should be fined for shooting Cecil illegally. I don't agree with how some have reacted to the lion's death in a negative light, but I also don't understand why compare the lion's death to starvation, abortion, and other issues.
