September 2015 Friendly Cab Contest /Challenge
This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation.
Theme: none n/a
Rules:
Cabs entered must be completed by the deadline (they can be started before the month). All entries will require a photo of the slab or rock, preform and finished cab. So no cabs pulled from the drawer.
You can enter as many photos of the finished cab as you like (within reason) on the same post. If you decide to add another photo later on, please edit your original post.
Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified) in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the item as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.)
We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). any duplicates will not be included in the voting list.
Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share.
Also, don't forget to include the name of the material.
If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first.
There may be a prize for this contest, I will know on the 1st of the month (if no one else enters last month's competition).

There seem to be some difficulties in rustling up entries for cab competitions. Have people here thought of just voting on their favorite entries in the "Creating Cabs" forum, since that one seems more active?
(I'm very new here, so if that's already been discussed and discarded, I apologize for my ignorance.)

Personally, I won't be ready for competition for awhile. I am finally getting a real lap. Working with a dremel has been tedious at best. Useful tool, just not for cabbing.
My slant lap is scheduled for delivery this afternoon.

whats with this theme stuff why not keep it the way it was ? Makes it more fun I think as several people noted before. Some months may not have a theme though.... but if I do have a theme it is something that everyone will be able to do. If people are not entering because I have a theme, I would consider taking it out in the future... But I think this theme is rather simple that can be applied to a wide range of materials.... These are people that could enter with something I seen from the cab board... if it was completed this month. Donnie's Rocky Treasures micellular @drummond Island Rocks @<'))))>< Fish

It's less fun if not as many people participate.
While I like the idea of themes in the abstract, if the net effect of having a theme is that fewer people enter (which seems to be the case) then I think they're ultimately detrimental.
As a general observation, glenzz01, the last few competition threads have been overwhelmingly dominated by your comments. You may want to considering making more liberal use of the "Edit comment" feature.

I agree w/ Roy. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! I believe some folks may be put off by all the changes and requirements. K.I.S.S.! Maybe next month, you could have 2 contests. 1 Glenn's way, and 1 the old way, just to see what happens. I'll put up a Sfrb of slabs for the winner of the old way. Worth a shot.

I will go the old way (no theme) next month but I really don't think that is the problem... I think the problem is a lot of people don't have the time as some stated, although i know some might make one in spite of the situation. I'm not sure why you guys hate a theme so much, as all themes pertain to lots of materials both common and rare. Some people I think are forgetting that it is a contest or a challenge against ones self for fun... not against each other like most think... or a way to get more free rock if your already good. This is why I think is a lot of new people don't join, now or before.

As a newbie to lapidary, I was initially excited to contribute and track my progress over time, and get that sweet sweet external validation. But glennz01, honestly it's your approach to this competition that has me least excited about it. I spent some time yesterday reading through the old FCC threads. IMO, since you've taken this on, there's a pervasive tone of scolding and haranguing your fellow forum-members and this stubborn-headed unwillingness to truly LISTEN to what people are saying. From the disrespect initially shown @wampidy for his generous contribution, to this obsession with having a theme, it seems like you are the one who is taking this too seriously and sucking the fun out of it. I know I'm being a bit harsh, but it does appear that several people have already tried to give you some very good advice. Here's just my two cents.

Maybe Glenn is trying to make the RTH monthly FCC more interesting and fun for those that decide to enter until carleton returns. I also think Glenn would like feedback on the cabs he enters in the cab contests so he may learn and improve his cabbing technique. spiritstone created a similar contest on the Opal Auctions forum, but it didn't hold because most of the forum members did not cab. micellular, you have 2 beautiful cabs that could be entered in the contest - your Guadalupe cab and probably your silicified limestone, although it has curvy lines. I believe the rules are they have to have been cabbed w/in the month of the contest.

As for then cabs are made, carleton said they must be finished during the month... but could be started months earlier. I did not change any of his rules in that seance... apart from adding a theme. Although I think Carleton had it so there is 1 entry per person but i'd have to relook myself.

Well, there goes my entry. Plume agates have neither dots nor lines. In all of the years that I've been on this forum, I haven't entered a single cab contest. Guess I'll wait until there's a more material friendly contest for my first entry.

...Next month I was thinking about fall colors (I thought that would be cool for October) but I will postpone that for november if the next months resaults are the same... glennz01, I like your idea of fall colors for October, but have you seen some of the cool "Halloween" cabs and lapidary materials previously posted by some of the forum members? Maybe a 'spooky' or Halloween theme for October?

You gonna enter your plume if Glenn drops the theme Don?
I don't cab, but I miss seeing all the entries every month!

I feel that the push back against a theme has kept people from entering.... So I am dropping the theme for this month.

Well, glennz01, I commend you for trying to encourage folks to enter your themed monthly cabbing contest and for asking forum members for their recommendations for the contest. I thought your idea of a themed contest was pretty cool. I tried to help spiritstone come up with a similar idea to yours on the Opal Auctions forum except we created a monthly list for the year so members could view it before each month.
