woodman, this piece looks bleached on the outside. Is that from the sun? you mentioned earlier that putting it in the sun may bleach a similar piece. I took a slice of this and tumbled it. It lightened up quite a bit. I took another small piece and I am soaking it in Super Oxiclean which is sodium perborate (also sold as Snowy all fabric bleach). It has been in there for a few hours and is already lightening it up. I will post a picture in a couple of days.

Not sure what piece you are talking about, but a lot of pet wood will bleach out, but not all.

That was a huge surprise. It is a very heavy piece. Guess that is normal for petrified wood.

chances are good that it is bleached out. I had trouble posting pictures, it has a learning curve.

Finally after a bit of work and time,I finished this piece......I dug it up at Hollywood Ranch a month ago.... Broke a few pieces off of it(yes I spiked it),found most-glued the pieces back together..Couldn't find the other parts, but that's ok... It still has the bark on it..........I washed it in "Dawn" dish soap, than dipped it in polyurethane, dried it and is on display in my collection...

Would not want you all to think I ran out of wood pictures to post. this little 4 by 7 slab got polished today. Was laying out in shop and figured I may as well get it done. More Stinking Water Oak. I like the color change at the top where it was fractured at one time and rehealed. The white areas that look like polish did not show up as much before I took the picture. It is not polish, maybe something in the wood.

Couple more of my favorites....Mel Fortified limbcast I found down George West way: One of my more prized specimens. Got this from Matt ( Darwin) Dillon along with having a nice agate chat. Neither of us knows what type of wood it is, except for being kind of shrinkwood in nature, but I think it's pretty exotic looking stuff.

I'm a big fan of petrified palm root. Here's a couple of my favs....Mel Edison, CA palm root. Replacement don't get much better than this: Mojave Desert material I think from out around Castle Butte. Fiber grading into root: George West again fiber/root contact zone: More Mojave root: Opalized SE Texas palm root: Yermo, CA fiber. Root is much more common out there.

Picked this slab up at my rock club's show last weekend. Have no idea what it is. I just liked it and the price was right!

This is my favorite piece. Not too gemmy but cool' (in my opinion). I love the knot that it has.

I would have to contour polish the knot!

Great thread!! I now have a cramp in my finger from hitting the like button so much. A few from the South Saskatchewan River. Largest piece I have found. Found this sticking out of gravel pile that was bull dozed up by the spring ice. Jet black when wet. My favorite find. The first yellow I have seen come from my hunting grounds. Finally some Opalized wood. Scenic shot of the valley. Lots of smoke from the California fires made up this way.
