Starting to feel like a squirrel collecting nuts before the colder weather hits. Not sure how much is too much or if that exists . I've only got these small 3lb barrels...maybe I should have gone for the 15! Every time I go out I come back with several plastic bags full. Lots of quartz, some agates, maybe a little common opal and other miscellaneous minerals. Should be fun. Just wanted to share with ya'll (these are 64oz containers. 1 half full of <.5 inch, 2 full of ~.5"-1", 1 3/4 full of 1.5"-3") Photos: pho.to/9qRhN2 Weeks into my first load. Doing a clean out and recharge tomorrow. Hopefully I have a slurry this time. I think I'll also have some small buts ready to move onto stage two.

Looking forward to your tumble. the first desert I ever roamed(from Georgia) was the Mojave. what a cool place on earth. I had a boat and collected fine agates on Lake Mojave.

I went out to southern California 2 months ago. I'll tell ya, not much in the way of agates out there, found about six or seven keepers out there the whole time. Mainly banded jasper and the like, also gneiss.

Mainly banded jasper and the like, also gneiss. Yeah at first it seems pretty barren but the more places i explore the more i realize is out here. At first all I could see was small bits of crystal quartz but the more i opened my eyes and perspective and the more I learned (a lot from here!) the more i have found. my hauls keep getting bigger and bigger! I think there are many small contained areas around the desert that have specific stones, it's not always a wide spread abundance so you have to find these small areas wherever you go. maybe that's the way it works everywhere but i think it's even more drastic in the mojave.

I pulled a jet ski out to L Havasu. Road the lakes on the colorado river, then left my engine with www.groupk.com. They modified it and sent it back to Atlanta for me to install.

I believe the best rock hunting was where the ridges feathered out into the lake and where washes made flat beaches. I remember being very tired, lake full of 4 foot waves. Worse than the ocean. Desolate areas. Giant lake.
Ha, looked at it on google earth. That lake is a humongous. And rock hunting best done by boat to find agate beaches. Memory coming back, road north from Bullhead, had to turn back south after 25 miles. Worried about running out of gas. Good rock beaches hard to find. Lots of steep bluffs.
Rent a boat, scenery worth it.

Here's one that's coming along nicely after only 5 days. For perspective, it's slightly smaller than a golfball. Before After Needs a lot of shaping but the initial cutting took very little time. Hoping the color isn't just a thin layer but looks like it might be. Fractures all over the place too but I like it Can anyone identify this piece? I was thinking it's probably just Chert. (fyi first pic was taken dry, indoors under an incandescent bulb. Second is wet, natural outdoor lighting in shade.)

Thanks! Here's a little more from today. I brought a kitty litter scooper with me this time and was able to grab stuff right out of the river and sift it through it, a lot of this stuff is already nice and smooth so it'll tumble easily. Found some great pieces, helps when theyre wet too, you can really spot the translucent ones.

Green stone appears too be andesite to me. Pretty common on the desert and along with basalt, often forms agate bearing outcrops.....Mel
