This guy is tearing up the leaves around the house. Scraping and marking, must be some does running around that did not get bred during the hot wet rut last month. Lazy dogs, you have an animal taking up on your turf. They probably know better than to mess with this teenage bruiser. From tree camera two nights ago, 10:30PM. Marking limb w/scent gland Urinating on ground scrape Moving away perhaps LOL, looks like she don't want you young man, certain he is chasing her for some sugar 11AM, she wants a night time date.

Yeah, our yard is full of whitetail in rut too. Boy, once their necks swell and they get in rut, I'm very careful anytime I'm outside the game fence. The blackbuck are even worse as they are totally oblivious to anything that gets in their way when they are fighting. And they are sporting 24+ inch needle sharp twisty spears on their noggins. When they charge, these are pointing straight forward. They'd skewer you like a kebob if you got careless.....Mel

Don't think a wolf could handle a healthy buck 1 on 1 Mel. speed agility stamina horns strong neck, bad combination. You know they can be dangerous in rut, especially your human friendlier deer. Not me, not getting near one. Certain you are cautious. Glad they are so shy around here.

That is a 3 1/2 year old deer there. Good, older sounds better. Been avoiding deer that size, waiting for them to grow bigger. The hunters are not to kill them till the have more mass and 'bigger than basket' racks. See that size a lot, the bigger are here though, but about totally nocturnal. This one old, aged at 7, on right side. Any idea what age is the one on left ?

James, It is incredible just how strong a whitetail is for it's size. We had a buck a couple of years ago that had tangled itself in an electric horse fence wire. In attempting to untangle it, I grabbed the wire and tried to take the buck down. I weigh like 230 and it weighed maybe half that much and he drug me all over the place. Finally got two tranc darts into it and it still never went down properly. Finally got itself untangled after it eventually wore three of us grown men out. Suckers can flat out stand on their hind feet and box too. They can kick you silly in an instant. Definitely not the peaceful little Bambis some folks ting they are. We've got Mouflon sheep too. Them guys are built like little stocky tanks and can knock you clear into next week with ease....Mel

You are a braver soul than I, will never touch a live deer. Especially the ones with horns. Two men have been killed by fenced deer here near Atlanta in recent years, both deer in rut. They are a strange combination of speed and strength. I had come out of a stand during the rut one year, sitting on a log smoking when I heard what I thought was a deer walking up behind me. Smoke blowing directly in it's direction, turned and noticed it was a nice 8 pt buck with what looked to be red mud all over it's head. I dropped it and as I approached it the suspected red mud was blood. That deer had been beat to pieces, both ears shredded like a razor knife got ahold of them. 5-6 deep punctures on it's head and face. That deer hide is resilient, had to take a lot of force to puncture it so. I thought he was walking as if unstable. He may have been to beat up to survive, so stressed. Another time I called a buck in with a grunt call from a long distance. He came in walking sideways showing off his size. Every hair on his body was standing straight up, making weird goat sounds. I was frightened by him and quit calling. Maybe fifty feet away, as if he did not have ability to focus on me, in a daze w/crazy eyes. Please take caution w/those 'bambi's. Really. Could not imagine how powerful the large bodied whitetails are up north.

Hunters were coming here to hunt, one was on his way so we went up the driveway and made a fake rub on a tree not 3 feet from the driveway so Virgil could see it. Ever since that rub was put on that tree they started scraping next to it. Must have been 6 years ago and every year it is a scrape location now. Funny animal those whitetails. Are your mule deer competitive like that Michael ?

You can't age a deer by the antlers. Genetics, nutrition, and age together dictate how the rack will come out.
I based that guess on the fact that the deer in the pic shows characteristics of being an immature deer.

That is the best way. Not only is it more accurate, but a buck in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Whitetail will live their whole lives in a two mile area...

Yep, I've observed the same thing. Whitetail have a very small home range and the trees they use for scrapes have to be protected or they will debark them year after year. We had blacktail at our ranch in Commiefornia and they might rub a bit when removing their velvet but you seldom saw scrapes on the ranch as much as with whitetail. I do believe that the blacktail seemed more aggressive but were way less tame or numerous so not as dangerous as these dang whitetail here in Texas. Last census we had about 1100 here on the ranch so you have to literally wade through the dang things wherever you go....Mel

About 2 weeks ago I was coming home on South Fulton Parkway. We were a couple miles from the Chattahoochee River bridge going toward 166 at Fairplay. Saw about 5 deer standing along side the road so I slowed down to about 40 mph. A mile later, a very big buck with a huge rack crossed the road in front of us. Barely missed him ! He was the biggest deer I have ever scene ! Was scared ! A week later was going to Fairburn on the Parkway and saw 4 deer dead after being hit just from the river bridge to the highway 70 crossing. Told my wife's cousins that Fulton County is going to require a deer hunting license to drive on the Parkway ! !

While living in ND,we had deer (whitetail) in our yard all the time. The bucks were racking my one young tree and debarking it something serious!!!!! I did everything I could to keep the bucks away from that tree! Finally an oldtimer told me to pee on the tree and the local area for about a week!! Heck it was a nice tree,so yes, that's what I did and my boys too...(It worked) The buck left it alone the rest of its time.. As it grew bigger, the scares are still on the tree, but its a nice 40 footer with history.....

A few years ago a state record was killed by a car along that area on S Fulton PKWY Frankie. This area produces big animals, along the west side of the Chattahoochee River below Atlanta. I say it is rich fog from the river pushed in by the predominate NW wind.
