BORING Now, I know that will offend a lot of people, but....... Kurt you know I'm one of your biggest admirers and no you could not offend me (unless you told me this dress makes my arse look fat), and I think I understand your point but also think you missed one important fact - you are INSANELY talented carver and most of us "boring" cabbers aren't even in your league regarding creativity. The thought of making an animal shape should come normal and natural to someone of your talents but to us regular folks just trying to make something pretty and marketable without breaking it, it's not a realistic consideration. I try push myself to new heights usually by taking on a new and expensive material that will impact on me if I ruin it - for instance I bought a $100 slabbette of Larimar at Quartzite last weekend and I'm too terrified to touch it so far. I know once I do the creative juices will flow and I'll calm down and either finish it or break it. My sister wants an oval pendant from it ... if that seems boring to a creative genius then so be it but I'm happy making little shiny things that make people happy to wear or buy from me

That's exactly my point. I cant draw, I dont do well in general with arts & Crafts or music (love and admire them all). But I tried for so long in different things and it never worked out, until I started in stone....... I'm absolutely sure that you and many others could do much better than me, yet will never realize that, simply because for the idea of failing. Cost, is a serious consideration for the majority of participants. I too, I got a few pieces that I don't dare touch yet. I have no interest in monetary value of the pieces, but they are either way to expensive to replace, or simply do not exist anymore (as example; I got a deep-sea black coral harvested before the ban). I don't dare touch that thing yet. By the end of the day, everyone needs to do the things that satisfies their own needs, and that is fine. The thing that stupefies me, is simply, that most people do not seem to have a longing to try and go beyond. I for one will continue to encourage people to go beyond comfort-zones, but its a lonely place, in an immense sea of contend participants.

I thought making a heart shaped cab out of as single piece of stone without any gluing would be impossible, they are now my best sellers. One doesn't need carving wheels to make hearts, I wish I had some 8" wheels to make them on though but my 6" have enough room for my typical sized hearts.
I learned very fast the angles in which you can or can't do on a cabbing machine. Granted I hardly have any expensive material other than a few slabs, I am not really worried about breaking things though and haven't broken something yet that was solid.
I challenge everyone to try it and see what happens
if your worried about breaking something, maybe take a piece of common material to work with, post the results regardless of the outcome.
I know for fact that they can be done on standard wheels as I have made 8 hearts already and they all sold. If you want to see examples of the ones I made look through my facebook photos.
I'm going to finish my colorblind cab this weekend no matter what I need to do to finish it.
As for the animal, reguardless of the theme i'm still making one myself... not sure what one yet.

If you have access to FB, here is a contest we did about two years ago on hearts. Out of 34 entries, 27 are from pure cabers and even better, 6 of them at the time where newbies. www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.504026536383699&type=1

I should be cabbing this on the weekend This is more of a test piece to see how much I like it to decide if I want to slab more of this material. This is silicated limestone I'm not sure but i'm hoping it has some pyrite in it. Only 2.25 hrs to spare! 2 different lights and the shine.. this was some very hard material.. took a lot longer than most cabs I have made. Still looks better under my lapidary light.. a bit darker than I was hoping for, but this is a darker piece f the material.
