January 2016 Friendly Cab Contest /Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation. Theme: Colorblind. Stones made from rocks that are black and white with every shade in between. Silver / metallic color is also included. Minor rust stains are common for river materials and is understood as long as it is not interfering with the majority of the rock. Rules: - Cabs entered must be completed by the deadline (they can be started before the month). All entries will require a photo of the slab or rock, preform and finished cab. So no cabs pulled from the drawer. You can enter as many photos of the finished cab as you like (within reason) on the same post. If you decide to add another photo later on, please edit your original post. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified) in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the item with or without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) We ask that all entries submitted to this contest be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the material, the process or what ever else you would like to share. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. Prize : provided by cobbledstones

I still don't get the theme thing.
In my opinion, people ought to be able to enter whatever they want to, rather than being constrained by some irrelevant personal whim.

cab contest has been fun and strong the past couple months, and I would love to see that continue. I made a new year's resolution last year to put something into every contest here, and I kept to it, I think it is the only resolution I have ever kept. I think my cabbing improved because of it. It was worth the time investment. As to the themes, variety is the spice of life. Some may see it as a nuisance, some may see it as an additional twist or challenge. Whatever gets people interested. Glass half full/half empty situation. captbob maybe you could come up with an interesting theme. I bet you could. I will put together a MFRB as a prize for the contest this month.

I will put together a MFRB as a prize for the contest this month. Awesome, thank you. I will try to enter - I kind of agree with both sides on the "theme" - on one hand its limiting but on the other it's challenging and it levels the playing field a bit. I'm racking my brain to come up with something colorless for this month. One month I'd like to have a "shape" contest where all entries must be the same shape - ie: oval, rectangle, etc.

I'll propose that the themes remain, but as an added incentive to enter, let the winner of the previous contest pick the theme or pick NO theme for the current contest. Let's remember "Variety is the spice of life".

OK, here is at least one entry. Spent an enjoyable afternoon rummaging through my stash of rocks, looking for suitable colorblind candidate. found this little chunk: it was pretty small, but i got a few good cuts from it: now, i don't do freeform very often and i'm not that good at it to boot, but i'm calling the finished piece "Winter Wheat". Not expecting to win any prizes with this one, but i enjoyed the challenge. At the suggestion of glennz01, i have tried for a clearer photo.... Thanks for the contest! KD

DO NOT mess with her dish rags. Or do not get caught. More importantly, DO NOT use them for packing material on rocks sent to cobbledstones ! A ladies sentiment can manifest itself in the most unusual of ways.
