Sounds great! One of the things we are doing is not just tumbling, but learning identification. (both of us for that matter) However, she is loving working with the MoHS kit, and lets her play with "sharp things" if you have any give away samples we can play with, please let me know. If they are fun to tumble, know I'll be happy to make a thread of pm about what we do and share the fun photos we take!

marinedad Thanks, at the moment, after doing some math, we have enough rock after a small spending spree that dad went on before xmas (to go with the present of course) that we are going to have to run the tumbler for I think about a year to cover it. Yeah so I spoil her on some projects like this... Don't judge, I can feel your look. LOL I actually see a second tumbler in the near future, and considering a Lorton 33b to significantly help that process along, however need to get process sorted on the first one, and make sure stuff is looking good before I start making mistakes on larger scales. We did some identification today, and worked on using the Audubon Society book she got for Christmas to identify some stuff in dad's collection, and then using the tools on some of the unknown specimens in the mixed batches we got.

celticravenI love that you are getting your daughter interested in geology. I teach 8th grade science and a large part of what I teach is earth science. The vast majority of students find the subject material very boring, rocks aren't as cool as cell phones and video games. In the area that I live in we primarily have shale, limestone, sandstone, etc. Not the most colorful or exciting stones. This is part of the reason I got into rock tumbling, to bring some variety into the classroom. Teaching a child the wonders of the natural world is something she will cherish for her entire life. I find kids learn much more when they don't know they are learning. Kudos on getting her interested and keeping it fun.

I know I'm really late to this party, but if there are any rocks left that are up for grabs I'd love to get them. We're just about to finish our first full tumble cycle and are excited to start another. I have some rocks that I collected when I was a kid, and somehow managed to save from being thrown out by my mom. But, I can't identify most of them and really don't know if they can be tumbled or not. Anyway, I definitely need some rocks and would greatly appreciAte it.
Thanks, Alysia

marinedad I think alysia711 sounds like a much better candidate!!! alysia711 by the way, who is we??? I'm just curious... All, We pulled the rocks from stage 2 tonight, they look wonderful, however then the hose nozzle broke, drenched both of us in water in the 35 degree air and we were freezing and had to go inside. I am gonna have a lot of cleanup tomorrow when I get that fixed LOL. Nothing like freezing your 5 year old, in your hobby right?

I clean up to 40 pounds at a time during my clean outs and it is all done indoors where it is warm. One five gallon bucket full of warm clean water and another five gallon bucket with a strainer on it to dump and clean the rocks. When the dirty water bucket is full I carry it out to my grit pit and dump it. Last week I cleaned over 30 pounds and only had to dump the bucket two times. Much better then trying to clean rocks at -4 windchill. example forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/73333/48-pound-cleanoutChuck

I'm not there yet, not even slightly! However in retrospect, there are always things you do that make you a good dad sometimes. "Yes honey I think you should get your coat, it is cold out here." Those words were said and when she came back, Dad in the Tshirt and jeans, had to endure the sub zero water bath from the hose, the chunk of ice that struck him in the face after the ejection of the hose nozzle, and then his wonderful daughters comment, "Daddy, why don't you have a coat on?" Part of me wanted to dunk my head right on into the rinse bucket, and say yup.... I suck don't do what I do do what I say.... (We were both laughing at how wet and cold I was) Now the good news, after stage 2, they look wonderful!!! nothing is pitted or chipped, they quartz I didn't see anything smacked around chipped, cracked etc, the agates look wonderful. After I finish cleaning tomorrow I'll get them all started in pre-polish!

I guess I shouldn't complain about my 55 degree weather! But, I swear the water feels like it's freezing. The "we" are the kids and I. Now, technically, the tumbler was my 10 year old daughter's gift, but my almost 13 year old son is just as excited. I have a 3 year old daughter as well who loves rocks, especially when they're covered in mud, just as much as she loves her tutus and doc mcstuffins. The gift recipient is the one who is most likely to make things with her polished stones, which is why she got the gift.
