Sure works good for macros of small items. Use another $10 lamp from the other side(cord would not reach for this photo). I take macros with slow shutter speeds like 1/2-1/20. Holding camera still mandatory. Average 1/10. Trying for f7 to f11 for detail and depth. Blocking a bit of the lens seems to have no adverse effects.

hmmmm...
How about getting a third can, which is wider than the lens, so the lens will fit in the can and that can (with both ends cut out obviously) can sit on the two bottom cans - thereby the lens is not blocked by resting directly on the two lower cans?
Too many cans can spoil a sentence!
Is variable shutter speeds necessary for macros? Kinda wondering how close of close-ups I can take with my new camera. Haven't made time to experiment yet.

Yes, variable shutter speeds are a necessity. Some larger rocks are sedimentary and just sit around sleeping a lot so a slow shutter speed is ok. But, take some of those igneous rocks, they've moved fairly fast in the past and who knows when they'll take off running again...requires a fast shutter speed for them just to be on the safe side so you don't get burned. Metamorphic rocks are kinda in the middle...shutter priority set around 1/125 or 1/250 should insure sharp images...apearature will change a good bit from one f/stop to another. I don't usually go into so much detail but being from Florida I knew you'd appreciate it.

Just hold out for the improved JPtripodâ„¢ release Scott. It will probably involve welding during construction.

YES. I get you. After a can flow chart.
The lens being blocked has no effect except at the edges of the photo which got cropped out.
That Sony takes great macros in strong light. But never ran it in manual mode to force it to do say 1/10 @ f8 for weaker light. Easy to snap off a few macros of say your keyboard for instance. if it takes photo with f3-f7 you may have poor focus front to back.
The closer the camera gets to the subject the less the bandwidth of focus(depth of field). So if you focus on the top of a golf ball at 6 inches away the top may be in focus and not the outside edges-in auto mode... If you switch camera to manual or priority mode and buffalo it by picking 1/10 second and letting it pick the f-stop(shutter priority I think)) it will pick higher f-stops like f8-f11 f3 has narrow focus bandwidth, f8-f11 has a wide bandwidth. i set mine 100% manual and tell it 1/10, then watch the light meter and adjust the f-stop. That takes a 'thru the lens' light meter. I don't think the Sony has 'thru the lens'. sorry for the exposition. But I can look and see if the Sony has aperture or shutter priority. That will do best macros.

Choosing aperture mode and high value like f16 or better will give you increased depth of field. Heck, I still have my old Nikon F and F2 manual cameras and some killer lens for them. Guess I should put them on flea bay and see what they will bring

You have to be careful how hard you hit them...you hit them too lightly they'll scamper off like a California cliff slide. On the other hand, if you hit'em to hard they'll sit there and quiver like the San Adreas fault. To hit them "just right" (in the words of Goldilocks) put your left pointer finger between the rock and the hammer to help dampen the blow (do you really need to ask me how I know this technique?

Darn right photos will be posted Now this old Nikon D70 accepts film lenses too. Consider a D70 body if the F1 F2 lenses fit it Arlen. That's why I think the old D70's are bargains at $100 used since expensive film lenses are being sold for little of nothing that fit them.

Shouldn't that be "Smack-ro"? Easy there, radio, or I'll send a change of address in for you and relocate you next door to captbob's chihuahuas. Ok, got that out of the way. Now...what James said about your lenses. Get a camera that can mount them and keep using them. They'll be manual everything but some of that old glass is very good. I shoot Canon but I've got some old Nikon glass that I pull out and use on occasion. I buy "focus-confirmation" adapters (makes the little red light in the viewfinder light up when you hit focus) that allows me to mount the Nikon glass on my Canon cameras. I've got a 55mm Macro 3.5 that is a downright good little landscape lense...and several others. But, I mostly use my Canons...auto-everything...I'm lazy. Unless it's a rare bird they're not worth too terribly much but definitely don't chunk'em...you can get several dollars for them...or use them.
