Prediction here is snow then lots of rain by Sat. night, may well not get above freezing 'till Monday. Everyone stay home and stay safe. Almost midnight. Icicles on deck rails about 3 inches. At 6 inches trees start visiting, power lines coming down. Only 1/10 inch left till 3AM. Probably dodged a big bullet. Stay warm Larry.

Brutally cold here this morning with light snow on the ground and the thermometer was reading 1 (One!) degree! Forecast is for 60 degrees by Thursday, then cold again with freezing rain. Crazy swings in conditions like I never remember seeing!

Crazy swings in conditions like I never remember seeing! Power came on but the pressure switch sensing water line froze preventing water usage. heater fixed that. Made it to 27F for an hour. 1F would have devastated. Life here not attuned to such. Bet your deer were up and about Arlen. Good luck staying warm still hunting.

I hunted quite a lot during our muzzleloader season Dec 24th-Jan 3rd, but failed to take a shot. I got the new to me Dan'l Boone style black powder rifle and two evenings the deer came in just at last light and stayed in the trees where there was less light. Every time I would draw a bead on one and close my left eye, they just all but disappeared. I would open my eye and could see them ok, but close my eye again and the shadows just swallowed them. In all good conscience, I just couldn't take a risky shot like that and take a chance on just wounding one. Had I taken my more modern inline with a scope, there would have been meat on the table, but the fun and challenge of hunting like our forefathers was a real hoot, even with no deer! Yes, the cold has them moving a good bit. in the 23 mile drive to the shop and back we have been seeing deer feeding at the field edges almost every trip morning and evening. Archery season closes the Jan 15th, so I'll try to sneak in a couple of hunts before hanging it up until this September.

Arlen enjoying the new toy. Have you a freezer full radio ? Enjoying it very much even if no deer have been harmed. I have one deer in the freezer from our main rifle season, but would have liked a second one. May still happen with the crossbow

Now that you had a blast of ice on the foliage. Does it drop its leaves like other trees? or do they just bounce back up with no problems after defrosting.

The ice coating will assist pulling deciduous leaves off, they will fall during the winter regardless. Most non-deciduous foliage will remain with no ill effects. Worst case scenario for non-deciduous foliage is extreme cold with a frost coating. That can kill the foliage. Orange orchards and ornamentals are sprayed with water to coat the foliage with ice to protect the foliage. The ice actually serves as an insulator. Florida orange orchard iced

Haha! we don't even thinking of washing our vehicles until it warms to 20F. , otherwise you will be froze in your car or froze out of it. Take a screwdriver with you to pry open after a wash.

I had to pry my car doors open yesterday due to 3/8" coating from freezing rain. Coming down at 32-33F. Today is 15F and wife had me come outside and free wet mop frozen to concrete in seconds. She learned not to put the wet mop outside after mopping. Us dumb southerners.

I switched to propane from fuel oil, not enough btus in propane for my liking, grew up with wood, when I owned a greenhouse 30 years ago we burned 30 to 40 cords per year and only heated the green house Feb through May. My garage is heated with a rocket stove with out the heat sink and in this weather I can get it to 32 in there if I burn it for a few hrs, insulation is my next project out there. With a rocket stove you can get a whole lot of heat from a little wood as there is no waste. Mine is kind of modeled after this.

With a rocket stove you can get a whole lot of heat from a little wood as there is no waste. Mine is kind of modeled after this. I studied a rocket stove you mentioned in a past thread. Serious efficiency going on with that burner. Now burning 30-40 chords would start getting old in a hurry. I wish you had a 110F artesian well pushing 20 gallons per minute. Imagine that. Ever so often a drilled well in the Florida aquifer hits hot water. Sorta useless in Florida. A dream-going to Iceland where they have lots of free heat from hot ground water. "Reykjavik has the world's largest and most sophisticated geothermal district heating system, which has used natural hot water to heat its buildings and homes since 1930. Today, geothermal powers the entire city"
