My sister uses a drip pot on her camp stove. That always seemed like cheating to me. I prefer the percolator. My late father in law used to do extensive camping out West. He was quite the adventurer. He used to put charcoal in the pot. Something to do with settling the grounds. Maybe someone else has heard of it.

In my opinion, which is spot on by the way, drinking instant coffee is like tossing agate over the hill and cutting quartzite.

Mark, I totally agree with you. I used to be a coffee snob, a coffee connoisseur. (Although, I never went so far as to roast my own beans!) I never said I prefer instant coffee, I said that's what I drink nowadays. Real coffee, drank (drunk, drinken?) black at my dad's is always a treat. Years ago, I had a coffee maker called My Cafe, made by Toshiba. I loved that thing! You'd measure whole beans (premium or el cheapo) into it, add water, set the timer, and wake up in the morning to the sounds / smells of fresh ground beans being turned into marvelous coffee. Now that'll perk you right up!
Eventually, my coffee maker gave out on me, became obsolete, and I could no longer get parts to keep it working. That's okay, I don't have counter space for a coffee maker now anyways. (I actually have one in the cabinet, but only use it if company comes.) So I drink instant. Quick and cheap (microwave mug of water). Doesn't matter if it tastes good, I'm only in it for the caffeine, lol. And I am not out to impress anyone. Mark, as you grow older (notice I did not say grow up?), some things just aren't as important to you as they used to be. I guess now I am a "settler," lol.
Don't know how many of you can say this, but I have never been in a Starbucks!

I hear ya. For a long time, my parents had instant, which meant I did because I was at home. Then they got a drip maker, ditched that and got a percolator. I use a drip now. Although, I just as soon use a percolator. Starbucks- funny thing... I was on my way to Bush Gardens Williamsburg with my brother and had a hangover, so we popped into one real quick for some caffeine. When I got in, I realized my britches were ripped out and my (clean) underwear were advertising to the world. Everyone was staring, but I really didn't care, I needed my coffee. So, I calmly waited in line and got it. This was just about when camera phones became the norm. I'm convinced that somewhere on the internet is me standing in line at a yuppie Williamsburg Starbucks with my ass hanging out!!! They were old, comfy, paint splattered jean shorts, what can I say. Anyway, I ran into a nearby walmart for some new britches and had a fun day at the park.

Sometimes on the weekend I like to perk some coffee in my old glass pot. Fun to watch it brew. Both I have are from the 1940's. We have both the 4-6 cup and the 6-9 cup.

Even in the field, we usually had real coffee. We had a great mess crew.

Never been there either. I prefer Mc Donalds coffee. Every once in a while I will have what I call my cold morning camping coffee. 1 oz each of Kahlua, Bailey's Irish cream and JD. Topped off with coffee. After 1 or 2 of these, you don't really care how cold it is.

Before my first coffee in the morning, I hate everyone. After the first cup, I still hate everyone. But feel much better about it.

So what brands do you folks like? My wife and I are thinking about offering free coffee at our Montana business this summer. I am not a sophisticated coffee drinker, but many of our customers are. My wife grinds Starbucks French Roast and brews it strong. At the Black Bear restaurant in Bend, OR I had a coffee called Seattle something that was very good. I'm thinking about ordering some Community Dark Blend and trying that, as I had some customers recommend that. I'm open for suggestions!

I like that brand over Starbucks.

I love instant coffee in my morning smoothie. Bunch of ice, nonfat milk, Chocolate Royale Slimfast, a banana, and a monster slug of instant coffee ( so much I can't shoot straight sometimes). Blend it to a milkshake consistency and drink about a quart or so. Man that gets the old juices flowing....Mel
