I like the one that hasn't been tumbled yet. It looks like a skull with one red eye and a blue mouth. Great photos.

I believe I sent this one to snowmom.
I think "scribbly" Chinese writing stone hits the mark, lol.

I like those pre-tumbled rocks, meviva. Lots of interesting color/pattern combos, hope they take a good shine for you. Seems worth a few bruises on the ankles to get a stash like that. Oops! Looks like I already told you once, when this first went around.

Despite having lived here about my entire life (minus one year), I have not been to the beach in Oceanside. Lots of mighty fine beaches much closer in San Diego.
I have been on a field trip with my rock club to Carlsbad State Beach, brought some round rocks home from there. A veritable smorgasbord of rocks! Added a couple to the tumbler just a week ago!
Carlsbad is just another five - six miles south of Oceanside.

Carlsbad is just another five - six miles south of Oceanside.
We also picked up a few rocks at Del Mar Beach, which is about 15 miles south of Carlsbad. Not nearly as many rocks, but they were very similar to the ones in Oceanside. Just in case you go to Del Mar, there is a bunch of Hematite on the railroad tracks that run parallel to the beach. I am kicking myself for not keeping any. rockpickerforever - If you get a chance, post some photos of your tumbles! ![](http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah290/jawilletts7872/Locations/California/20160604_143544_zpsprhhn1ln.jpg)

"txrockhunter I want to see pics of your rocks from Oceanside if possible when you get a chance. " A few waiting for their turn in the tumbler. ![](http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/ah290/jawilletts7872/Locations/California/20160620_223142_zpsycxhwuer.jpg) I'm hoping to see this one after a tumble, it smells agate-y (but my nose is often wrong).
The beach shots remind me a little of South Dakota agate beds --- just an overwhelming variety of naturally rounded stone that insists on jumping in your pocket. Having everything wet probably makes them even harder to resist.

Well, if you like beach shots... I know how all y'all like you pictures.
First of all, I must admit that I didn't go to Carlsbad, it was actually Cardiff, which is another ten miles south from Carlsbad. We went with a group of folks from my rock club, back in July 2011. At least, that is what the time stamp on my photos says. Almost five years ago, I'll use Diane's drocknut excuse for forgetting (old age).
View looking south.

The folder I had these photos in on my computer said we were looking for jade. Okaaaaayyy... Squirt bottles with water a must!

That's a lot of rocks! At one point, it started to mist a little bit, which was helpful. But it didn't last for long.
![https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7096/27742429612_0110cd7dfc_z.jpg](https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7096/27742429612_0110cd7dfc_z.jpg) We actually were looking up on the beach pretty much past the high tide mark, not in the water being beaten up by the rocks in the surf, lol. During the winter, our beach sand gets pulled out by the heavy surf during storms. During the summer, the sand comes back in.

Hard to believe the beach is so empty in July! Other than the surfers (who will go out in any kind of weather!), most people/tourists wait until the sun comes out.
The rocks have been cooling their heels (do rocks have heels? Oh yeah, they do when you cut them in a saw!) for five years,. Although they were pretty well rounded to start with, the ones added to the tumbler won't be moving on to polish in the vibe for awhile yet. Just using them for hard filler.
What I did do with them was make this collage/window box, if you will, with found items from that beach trip. Okay, well, I added a few things I already had, like the blue glass fish, the turquoise colored flattened marble, and the leaping dolphin. But everything else was found on the beach.
I've made a couple of these over the years, then donated them to my rock clubs silent auction. The same gal has bought them both!
When I have tumbled beach rocks done, will post some pics! May be a while...

txrockhunter those are looking really good. I love the one in the second pic and also the one that is your favorite. I also like the yellow and red one and green spotted one. I hope they polish well for you. I started my first batch from Oceanside yesterday. Today I'm doing a clean out of a barrel that has a bunch of your San Jacinto in it. Andrea Please post photos of both, if you get a chance. I would love to see what you've got after the rough grind. You have a lot more experience than I do, so if you have any tips on polishing these let me know what's working. Also, some of these are pretty large, like 4" to 6". Just curious if you had rocks that big and how you plan to polish them? Most of mine won't fit into the lot-o. Thanks, Jeremy Here are a few of the San Jacintos. These came from a small batch that have been tumbling for a while. I just started a 12 lb barrel that has a lot of them in it but they have only been running for a week. As for the Oceanside rocks, I have a lot of large ones also. I'm debating whether to cut them or try to polish them whole. Many of them won't fit in the vibe so they would have to be finished in the rotary if I don't cut them. I will just see how it goes. It will be an experiment. San Jacinto's ![](http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l528/meviva2/Mobile%20Uploads/240D0147-36CC-4525-A0BF-1644DB009E10_zpsexui7a8s.jpg) ![](http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l528/meviva2/Mobile%20Uploads/F0C5AE0F-81C4-412D-A2E2-E11A37ACF9AF_zpsgjf4ae8g.jpg) ![](http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l528/meviva2/Mobile%20Uploads/FA250C8E-F3AE-424D-BF39-B9223BCEE3F0_zpsehgz2stv.jpg)

Pretty rocks follow you Jeremy. I have a piece of you Jacincto palm just out of tumbler that deserves attention. Needs to have photos taken from all sides.
Somebody is hooked.

I'll throw it in the tumbler this weekend. It's weighs a little over 19 ounces, so it will be interesting to see how it goes......I have been pleasantly surprised with the rest of these rocks, so hopefully that continues!

That one will be gorgeous tumbled! But, looks like this rock has varying degrees of hardness. I'd be careful tumbling it in a rotary, as it will probably under cut. Like this - ![https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7628/27883722085_a231f7f42e_c.jpg](https://c6.staticflickr.com/8/7628/27883722085_a231f7f42e_c.jpg)
Rocks like this best done in a vibe. I will either grind this one, or hit it on the flat lap to smooth it out again, before putting into the vibe.
I am not quite ready to do a cleanout on my tumbler, but needed to open it anyway to check the slurry viscosity and sharpness of grit. Couldn't get down to the bottom of the barrel without dumping it all out, but managed to fish a few out and rinse them off. Just felt for the round, smooth ones, lol.

*Most* of these are from the beach, I know at least one of them is not.![https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7288/27883719355_dfe096d0e9_c.jpg](https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7288/27883719355_dfe096d0e9_c.jpg)
Jade-ish looking (but most likely not). Probably a quartz mixture.
Really liked this one. Front.

Same rock, rinsed off a little better.

This one is very typical of the beach rocks. Spotted!
A little one, quartzish.
This one is an agate from somewhere else. This one would have benefitted from a vigorous grinding before tumbling. The divot is holding "still-very-sharp" 30 (or is it 36 , Scott @shotgunner that I got from you?) grit. Need a King Kong grinder, a la jamesp, or a ganged blade unit like captbob plans to make. Or much, much more *sharp* smalls (not round beach rocks, lol).

This one could stand some grinding as well.
![https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7411/27849326176_aeec5e7728_c.jpg](https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7411/27849326176_aeec5e7728_c.jpg) This one surprised me. Must have been more consistently hard than I thought.

No undercutting!

That's all the beach rocks I have tumbled so far, and only in coarse grit. But that's what you have to look forward to. I'm sure they will take a great polish.
