I cut some Montana Agate today and I got two slabs that have the iris effect. It is minimal, but still iris. I can't get pics though because it is such a thin line of iris that I can't see it through the camera to position it.

mark - try using an LED light hold the wet slab about arms length from you and move in/out from light source until it shows. best method I have found to get the iris to pop...congrats always fun to find it. cheers

I looked for it. The slabs are about 1/8 inch thick.
I sat and listened to the guy from WA that knows about iris agate at Tom Harmon's shop and in MT at the Bozeman show. I sat and talked with him for quite a while trying to soak up as much info as possible.

I use the sunlight to catch the "Iris",try that...... Congrads... The sunlight is really the only way to see it. I can't see it through the camera so I could take 100 pics and never have it right. The iris is not any wider than the line you see between the large crystals and the micros.

That is an epic Montana, iris or no iris. Just wait until you see some really nice ones. This one is really not that great. I cut another MT yesterday that would have been REALLY nice were it not for the voids. I will try to get a pic while there is still light.

Here is the uncut part of the rock with the iris. Here is one that looks like petrified cream of wheat. I kept this one only because of the pattern in it. As you can see, the pattern went all of the way through.

Great job if you self collected... wish I could hunt in Montana, I don't know too much but I know they're found along the Yellowstone river for a couple hundred miles...
