Hell roy , half my friends are dead. Life is too short. Lost 5 life long friends in 3 years time. Giving to gain friends is getting to be a way of life. My wife will be your friend for a puppy. She would probably even add Denise to her Christmas card list.

I needed a diversion from the smugglers.(he thought I was being generous) In that case I was using the poor bloke as a decoy. But a gave him a good time since he survived and came back with a cabana of fine rocks.

Just to give everyone an update - I am no longer involved in attempting to purchase the rocktumblinghobby.com domain or admin rights to the forum located on the Proboards website.
Thank you to those who directed their support in my general direction. I still don't know what the magical price is but it seems to be "double" the fair offer I put forth.

Dang. I was (am still) thinking that you are the best qualified Tommy. This is disappointing to hear.
If folks here want to raise "double your fair offer" what's the problem?
ETA: So folks don't misunderstand, I still think it's silly for the group to "play Santa", but if that's what they want to do ... why not. Still think you are best for the job Tommy.

There is mention of a newsletter on the main site. It says there that the information submitted for that will never be sold. Does that affect the value of this sale?

I've never seen a newsletter since I have been here.
Yes, major bummer! Thank you for giving it a shot, Tommy.
Mark does not seem to realize the value of this site is it's members. He seems to think it is worth more than it is, typical. What can we do if he won't listen to reason? How about if we devalue it for him, or at least get him to see how important all of us are to the viability of the site?
I propose we ALL boycott the site, just for two days, to show him what the loss of the members would do. Without us, it is nothing, and may make it look less attractive to prospective buyers. Two days at first, maybe a week the next time. After that, he may listen to reason, and his price may come down.
I have worked for a business that was sold, and I was one of the commodities that went with it. It sucked!

If he made an income here, it would be different. If it is someone from the outside, they may not even give a crap about the forum. If it is someone from the site, they would believe that people would come back. Maybe Tommy can start a new forum?

*sigh* I gotta disagree with a boycott. Several reasons but my opinion and not worth the time to type out. I don't believe what Mark is looking for for the domain name, and forum etc is unreasonable. I made an offer which I considered less than I would be asking for the same - but all I could justify as I was not looking to turn this into a business. My offer was not rejected, and Mark actually told me that he should accept my offer but felt a need to give it some time. I understood this completely (I HAD made my offer like two days into his sale) and would probably do the same. I figure that I could pretty reasonably break even every month with just the set up in place here. Someone (anyone) with a mind to, could most likely turn a profit with a little effort. Tommy, Tony, Roy and others with their contacts could place ads on the RTH web site and Facebook pages and maybe make a decent return on their investment. Especially if the group buys it all for him/them! As to starting a new forum. There goes the content here. *poof* a decade plus of rock pictures and knowledge gone. As I said before, kinda like your house burning down. We survive, but what we lose can not be replaced. Some of it will be reposted over time as new questions are asked, but this would be like losing your family photo albums. There seems to be an agreement that Tommy could step in and do a fine job. If that's what folks want and ya'll are willing to bankroll it. Go for it. You don't need to come up with an unreasonable amount. (I ain't sayin') Just do it...

I realize he did not make an income here. But he knows that were we to purchase it, he has us over a barrel. I think he is holding out for as much $$ as he can get. If the value of it is going to go down, he would be better selling it before it does. Get on with his life, move on. Why not just sell it to us now, why wait? What's a couple thousand one way or another? It's not like it's a vast sum.
I would be totally all for Tommy making us a new home. Just thinking about losing archives of 14 years makes me very sad. Barring a new site, I suppose we could abandon this place and move en mass to other existing sites, but that would not be fair to them or us. They would feel they were being invaded, and there is no other rock forum that compares to RTH. Other sites I have been on have strict content rules, we need a place exactly like RTH, with a lot of free rein. I think it is why so many people like it here.

But he knows that were we to purchase it, he has us over a barrel. I think he is holding out for as much $$ as he can get. I'm not following, how would he have us over a barrel? If someone (or "we") purchase it, he's going to turn over the keys and will take some time working with the new owner on the hows and whys of how things work around here (administrative stuff) and then wash his hands of the day to day here. He has other plans and simply wants to move on in another direction. Nothing sinister about that. I don't see any sin in wanting to get as much as he can for what he is offering. Not many put something up for sale, without a fixed price, and don't hope for the best possible outcome. No foul there. It is NOT an unreasonable amount. Ya'll just need to figure out what you want to do. Pooling money and handing the reins over to Tommy seems to be the best that has been put forward. Run with that. Come up with something else. Or sit by and wait to see what happens. Maybe Mark should list it on eBay. (I would like 10% for that idea Mr. Mark!)
