February 2017 Fun Cab Challenge
This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome (just because the cab may not be the best please post anyway and if you like ask for feedback to improve).
Theme chosen by prior month winner Tommy : Color must be red, purple, pink, white, or a mix of those colors (or clear ) for St. Valentines day.
Heart shaped and or heart shaped carving strongly encouraged.
Rules: All hand made cabbing techniques may be used. Cabs entered must be hand shaped (can be finished in a tumbler) and be completed by the last minute of the month in your timezone. They can be started before the month but only finished during the month. You must have 1 photo of ether a preform or slab of the rock. You can enter up to 3 individual finished piece (not combined) photos and 1 of the 3 photos will be used for voting to see what cab folks like the most (please note the photo you want used). You can change your photos or improve your cab and place new photos in your original post replacing old photos by the deadline.
Finished jewelry cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified by the theme). It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the cab without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.)
All entries submitted to this contest must be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). Any duplicates will not be included in the voting list.
Feel free to share with us the story behind your workings or material.
Also, don't forget to include the name of the material.
If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first.
If there are any questions feel free to ask. Beginners to old timers are welcome.
Prize : winner is allowed to chose theme for the month following voting, no physical prize yet.

I find myself looking forward to the comp each month, and keen to make a start when I can. I have never done a heart before, and each time I sketched it out on the slab something seemed not right, I finally settled on a design which is proving a challenge on the flat lap. But some improvising by using some old sic grinding wheels mounted to the lap and semi profiled with some agate for the inside curve. I have a preform that I'm happy with. It progressed a fair bit last night and started sanding but the sic gave me some fairly decent scratches to work out, and I may even have to resort to a little hand sanding on the inside curve Jasper - Corop Victoria Australia Thought I better do a little more, it has been sitting on the bench staring at me for awhile now and the month seems to be flying by.

Hearts can be a challenge at first but become easy after your first one when you find out what you need to do. They also sell well. I generally dome each lobe based on my process from the inside bit depending on the material i'm working with. This time I can't do that as i'm doing something similar to what I did in the past material wise.

My entry Purple Burro Creek Porcelain Jasper / Pastelite / Damsonite whichever way the wind is blowing for you: The vein was cut with a 40mm diameter diamond blade and a carborundum pendant grinder: it could do with a little additional polishing with and intermediate grit(s), before the fine ones. The heart itself took a good polish. The making of Shot Thro' the Heart Finished Cab

That is going to be really sweet! I love the shape of your particular heart! I believe that's called a Witches' Heart and a link corroborates this

Ahh hearts are in fashion this month...... And nice efforts on both accounts. Looking forward to finished pieces. Just used mine for another contest. So a regular cab will have to do this time round. One of my favorite materials to work with. Chinese Pietersite that I abused years ago. Last in my pile and finally finished in a useful way. First pic is from about 6 years ago..... And reworked today Thanks for looking, Kurt

Figured I'd throw my hat in the ring this month. Was a balmy 40°F & sunny today so perfect weather to do some cabbing. This isn't a traditional heart, but I read the link metalsmith posted and decided it still can be considered a heart. It is to be worn this way too, as it is a replacement for a pendant my sister-in-law sent through the wash. I was gifted this slab by my good friend Ted - tandl. It is dumortierite. Thanks bud! Slab: Preform: Cab: Backlit: Showing polish: Finally the cab set in the bezel from my sister-in-law's broken pendant: Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day! Not sure if this follows Tommy 's theme for color bit if it counts as clear its all good by me. Not sure i'd consider the reliability of the link saying a teardrop is to be a heart though... everyone i know always considered that shape teardrops. (any shape works for this contest though)

"Theme chosen by prior month winner Tommy : Color must be red, PURPLE, pink, white, or a mix of those colors (or clear ) for St. Valentines day." glennz01 - why does this cab not fit the color scheme?

Nice one NDK! I love dumortierite. I had some like that- it was called dumortierite in quartz (from Brazil). I have straight up dumortierite and it is not translucent. I got a nice little slabbette of the pretty stuff that Susan had, too. I hate to say this, but dumortierite is blue. Lots of people have trouble with some blues and purples, though. I have a bad time with some green and blues. Can't tell them apart. But then, I really don't care if it is blue or purple. It just looks great.

The back-lit and set photos look purple on my monitor. His wife says it's purple, it's purple I have a small slab of "african dumortierite" that has crazy unbelievable deep royal blue color. I've been holding off on cutting it for whatever reason but it might get moved up in rotation once I get my shop going again.

I think we should be encouraging participation rather than putting it off. There's precious few enough contest entries!
From the link I posted earlier: 'In the early 1700’s, the heart shape changed again. As you can see from the pictures, the heart itself looks more like a pear shape but is recognizable as a heart to modern eyes.'
All good in my book.
