OK here's my entry. Started and finished in one session which is unusual for me...I usually do things in batches. Self collected Strawberry Onyx from the Ribbon Rock mine. Finished polishing first... Carved top then re-polished the girdles.

Just to think, if I'd taken a picture of the rough I could have put this one in (oh and taken a decent photo!)... Australian Koroit Boulder Opal And I had to spin the image to make it a heart, but you'd never know it was upside down if I didn't tell you! Anyhow, this is likely to be the last cab from me for a short while. Enjoy

Both are awesome - I really like the one on the right with the amethyst crystals - looks like a beating heart in the center.

Here's my entry. This is a piece of Rosetta Lace, which is a very soft stone - something like rhyolite or dolomite. Turned out to have a lot of healed fractures - oh well. It's my first heart attempt though, and I think that part of it came out ok! Turned out nice. The more you do the better you get I find that they are easy but time consuming.

OK, at the risk of sounding like a moron..... how do you do the cleft? With the edge of the wheel? Seeing all these hearts makes me want to finally give it a try. I would have sooner, but I can't stand heart jewelry. I have a mental block to doing heart cabs.
eta: I have to add that I am a proud recipient of one of Ed's hearts and those I DO like. Those puffy little hearts are just too cute!

Once you make one everyone that likes your stuff will want it so you will find yourself making more

Yeah, edge of the wheel. I found that doing one side was easy, but reversing it for the second side was a bit trickier. You find out when you're single how many hearts there are floating around in the jewelry of the world - the world LOOOVES hearts. I'm sure they'll sell.

On the few I've made I've had ZERO success selling them in my Etsy shop. I've ended up giving several away as free gifts.

In fact I feel like I've ruined my beautiful strawberry onyx cab I posted here. I should have stopped and let you all imagine it as a heart heehee.

Lol Tommy. Nevermind Tela, don't do it! (Or just try it on a scrap you don't like very much).

Has anyone seen hearts where the cleft isn't cut into the stone, but rather it is set in such a way that a claw or V-shaped prong forms the cleft?

Lol Tommy. Nevermind Tela, don't do it! (Or just try it on a scrap you don't like very much). No, no- I'm up for the challenge. I have to wait to get some preforming, though. I've had a bunch of good cabbing days, but the water outside is still too cold to do much with the tilesaw. I did that dumortierite today that you sent and the rainforest rhyolite. Both are gorgeous material. Thanks again. I'll post them after I get pictures.
