Thanks for the info johnjsgems and socalagatehound. I don't know very much about rocks, so I don't know how much time I'll be spending at the show. I thought I'd try and get a little bit more "bang for the buck" by heading toward Lavic to make it a full day, as the drive to the show will be 2.5 hours for me. A couple of days ago, I was able to chat with the author of a Barstow area rockhounding book, and he suggested an area near Lavic that looks interesting and is more west toward Barstow. Don't really know what I'm looking for, but his advice was to pick up anything that I liked. Supposedly jaspers are more common in this area. Good advice, I guess. At least I'll see. Best regards. Dave

Some dealers are there now likely. Friday is official opening day but people will come on Thursday for early bird finds. Saturday usually busiest day of show. I can't imagine seeing the show in 2-3 hours but I tended to spend way too much time looking at rocks and talking to dealers when I was a happy shopper.

As I mentioned earlier, I am looking to go early in the day on Saturday and then head up to the Lavic area around noon. Anyone else want to go? I will be flying solo that day, and I'll be going up to look for tumbling material. I plan on hitting the west side of the lava flow and then going to the traditional area if that turns out to be a bust. I've been given some guidance about the first place to search, so I'm hopeful it turns out well.
I'm a newb, but I think I have a decent grasp on looking for jasper for the tumbler. I have a 4x4 pickup, but I'm not looking to break new trails or add desert pinstriping to the side of the truck. Tires are not aggressive, so soft sand is not something I want to deal with. Let me know.
ETA: I am thinking about making this an overnighter. I could stay on Friday or Saturday...just kind of depends. Right now I'm leaning toward doing the show on Friday and Lavic on Saturday, but nothing is locked in.

Wait I'm confused. The link says the show is next weekend (10TH through 12th) not this coming weekend (3rd-5th). Just to clarify.

That's the problem when dates aren't listed, so I guess I'm guilty of adding to the confusion. I was referring to next weekend for my plans, the 11th specifically. I did find johnjsgems statement interesting that vendors will be there now. That kind of took me by surprise and made me double-check the flyer. That said, my original plans for the one day beeline out there on Saturday may change. I may head out on Friday, take my time at the show, and then spend the night in Barstow and hit the Lavic area Saturday. Then again, I also have the option of doing Saturday/Sunday. Just gotta figure out what I want to do. Dave

(Giggle) Get past that one. ETA the Lavic areas aren't a problem for pinstripes or sand.

Soft sugar-like sand is a bit of a concern, but it's my understanding the roads themselves aren't too bad. The pinstriping is tough to get by, but I know it will probably happen one day. Dave

We will haul our trailer out there this Sunday to get a spot. There will be 6-10 dealers already there but likely not set up to sell. We'll go back out Wednesday to take our time setting up. We are fortunate (?) to live nearby. Friday shopping and Saturday Lavic sounds a better plan to me. I couldn't understand driving hours and rushing shopping in 2-3 hours. Great place to camp too.

This is clearly a first time venture for me, so I don't know what to expect. With your statements about vendors being there early, I'm excited about the potential scope of the show. My plans may have changed a bit. @shotgunner has invited me for some Sunday hounding, so perhaps that means I'll still be going out first thing Saturday and then going to Lavic for the afternoon. From there, a night in Barstow will prep for Sunday. If all goes well, he'll be guiding a newb on Sunday in a different area, but I'm excited nonetheless. The boss has pretty much given me free rein for the weekend, so it should be a great time. Thanks all for your advice/help thus far. Dave

Well, @shotgunner and I managed to cross up days, so I'm still leaning toward doing the show next Friday (the 10th) and heading to the Lavic area on Saturday for hounding. If anyone wants to meet up, say the word. Regards.

Hi Dave
We're not going up until early Saturday (the 11th), Then heading out to the Cady Mtns area. Probably arrive there early afternoon. Then again on Sunday. I haven't been to the Lavic side of the freeway in several years, but I can PM you my cell and see how things work out.

That sounds great, Craig, thanks. Other than the walking, Lavic was a choice for me due to the alleged amount of surface picking and it being easy to get to. I am somewhat limited right now to no heavy digging due to recent elbow surgery. Regards.
