I seen that announcement. Seems like it just about supplies for making items not about the actual final projects? My sales on etsy this year are non existent. Year to date I am at 15% of the sales I made in the same time period last year. I am ready to pull the plug. Not worth the effort in creating and maintaining all the listings at this point.

Chuck Cabs fall in the category, Chuck. This will be double exposure for your cabs. Don't give up, yet. Sales have an ebb and flow.

I have looked at it and really don't know if it is to our benefit. Like most things that Etsy does, it will take us about six months of work to react to the change. I am just waiting and not optimistic at this point.

As far as I can tell... it is effortless on our part. They will automatically include our items for double exposure. Can't hurt.

It is the downstream work that we can't see right now that worries me. You are the optimist here and I am the pessimist. I have too much experience with Etsy to think this is a simple change. Those software programers just can't let things alone.

This, though, is not as bad as having to redo all the tags and titles..... yet.

Yep. I think we are on the same page on this. Etsy is just short for BOHICA.

I actually love Etsy My sales last year FAR exceeded my expectations and efforts in my opinion. When I broke myself last October things started to slide...to the point where Chuck is right - 15% of this same month last year is optimistic... but then again it's my fault, I've got 130 something listings where this time last year I had up over 200. Thank you for this post Tela I had not seen the announcement. I'll be looking forward to it - probably as simple as changing the 'category' of all of our listings to Craft Supplies and Tools ... I would imagine. Good thing because the categories before tended to suck ass.

I get out of it what I put it in it. I just don't like how they do things. I've had numerous problems with them. And I really hate that they drop changes on us and do their damn testing on us. I could type a blue stream, but I won't. But, like I said- If you want to sell handmade, there is no other place. (Even though they really aren't handmade anymore.)

Well good or bad I went in and changed the category of all my listings to Craft Supplies & Tools. I'm betting this is the direction they are heading with creating the new program.

Etsy is a good market, but like everything you have to know how to use it. You MUST use the promote feature. I use both Etsy and Google promotions. I set the daily advertising budget and set the highest amount I will let clicks be paid for by me. The latter is important because if you are selling something for $5 you don't want those clicks costing you 10%, which they can. Next, you gotta promote. Etsy will give you the option to post your listings on Twitter, Pinterest, etc. I get a lot of traffic from Pinterest. My 2 cents.

I've never seen a good return on promoted listings at my store on Etsy. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Regardless, my sales have been awesome so far this year. I don't know if there's been some kind of algorithm change in the search or if I've finally tweaked my tags just right, but something has definitely been working in my favor lately.

That is really great to hear. I am the first to admit that I am horrible about making my listings. Fancy descriptions and proper tagging are not my strong points. I would rather go clean my slab saw then list items on my ETSY. Chuck

Another selling tip that my wife has been on me about is the photos. Hugely important is lighting. I recently bought a small lightbox photo studio from amazon that included and LED strip of lights. My pictures are almost perfect now. No strange lighting that changes the color of the specimens, etc. That little box makes my specimens look like a professional shot them. Huge difference for $15 and it affected my sales literally the next day after I started swapping the pictures out. It just takes time to learn all these little pointers, but you'll get there.
Back to the original topic, I wonder how this will affect sellers. I'd rather not have for example turquoise rough in the craft supplies section of etsy because it seems to cheapen the product. A boat load of crap comes out of China, especially fake gems and minerals and I can forsee that part of testy being swamped with it. I don't want my genuine, unique material competing with that crap. Thoughts?

Thoughts? I think most educated buyers, with the money to spend, will gravitate towards quality in both material and workmanship. I would never by a cab, for instance, from China or India. I would rather pay 20 or more MORE to get a good quality artisan cab. I haven't had any problems putting fair prices on my things. People who can afford quality will pay for it. I don't let all the cheap stuff bother me. You shouldn't either. Quality stands out.

If you make a Wix or other website take advantage of (actual) Etsy search terms. Pay attention to which terms are searched to make a decision on naming your category/TITLE WORDS/keywords You guys probably know that.
fire pit verses fire pits was used as a search term 164 times more often. 16400164/100010 = 164
Ha, easy for a small category like fire pits. Jewelry has such a large amount of sellers and categories. I tried optimizing jewelry categories and was very challenged.
Have been considering looking into Amazon Marketplace.
This year
Search Engines: Etsy Google Others Views
fire pit 16400164 planter 170017 steel fire pit 160016 outdoor fire pit 110011 fire pits 100010 table top 9009 fire bowl 8008 Not Provided 0808 fire pit bowl 7007 metal fire pit 7007
