Man, do they charge you for that contest rock. There is such a thing as good rhyolite but that is plainly junk pile porous reject stuff for the tumbler. Least they could do is supply good tumble rough for their competition....Mel

Least they could do is supply good tumble rough for their competition....Mel The contest is a fund raiser for the club. It's a $30 box of rocks with the chance to win up to $250. The lady who contacted me when I won last year said that they lost money on the contest last year, but they're going to try to keep it going if they can. I think they need to have difficult rocks to tumble just to be able to distinguish the good tumblers from the bad. I'm thinking I'm going to be out tumbled this year.

I'm in the same place you are. I'm not sure how to proceed. I kept the bad ones to experiment with. Individual rocks seem to tumble differently. I ran some in the Lot-O and had varying amounts of shine and undercutting. None of my test rocks came out very well at all. I don't think I'll be seeking out more of these when the contest is over. @shotgunner , you sent me a rock that seems to be very similar to the contest rocks. Do you have any experience with this stuff? In a word no. Send me a pic of what I sent you and I'll help you ID it. Sorry not helpful Here's the rock you sent me. I think this is the only one. The colors are similar, and the way it shapes is very similar. Sorry about the dark pictures. IMG_6926 by jugglerguy, on Flickr IMG_6925 by jugglerguy, on Flickr

OK guys here's what I might be doing...... I may have put mine into a drum that has a 20 pound capacity and I may have filled it really full..... (80% at least). My filler is a local rock (Round Hill jasper (which is not really a jasper) and I probabley have not used 80 grit or anything coarser.

If they lose money this year something is very wrong with their (volunteer) process. I could drive up to Hayden hill tomorrow and fill my truck - this crap material is laying everywhere near the road in. You get club members over for lunch to break up rocks and put in boxes - MFRB shipping? All you'd need is 16 entries to break even. What am I missing?

Not sure how many people actually enter now. A few years ago they used to list all the people who entered and what state they are from but I do not see that anymore. The first year I won it was right around 40 entries and I would think many more now. The first year I entered there were not many RTH members that entered and now we have a good amount. Chuck

That's awesome Still it means more if it's not our own contest that we are owning if that makes sense.

A World Wide tumbling contest (such as the one these folks have going on) sponsored by this forum would be quite a draw to the forum. We could smoke their little contest.
Promoted on the RTH website and wherever else great minds come up with. Not just for folks here like Scott's (AWESOME) lavic tumbling contest was. Advertise the poop out of it - everywhere. Gotta be promoted bigly. Maybe even take out SMALL ads in rock magazines. Facebook the bejesus out of it. etc...
Guaranteed to draw new members.
I'm gonna have to start charging for these...

One of the big differences in this competition is that it is actually judged by folks that inspect the rocks. All of our contests have been judged on photos which means the best photographer stands the best chance. Example forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/66331/big-fun-tumble-contest-pollI think if we went about something like that it would have to be judged in person by a group of people with all entries held anonymous. Chuck I agree, but that would be next to impossible for us since we are not all in the same location. I think judging something like this would be very difficult, even in person. With more entries, the difficulty increases.

Was thinking about that and figured the contest rocks would have to go to someone in Cali where a few/several members here could be judges. Thinking that's the only place where multiple members are in "close" proximity. Details such as that could be worked out. Just think it would give the forum never before seen exposure.
