The entries could be sent to somebody who is going to be at Quartzite. That person could open the package and assign the rocks a number and record who's they are. That person would not be a judge. Have at least 3+ judges with hidden ballots record 1- 10 or so then total to find winner..................MrP

jamesp Don't kill me but wouldn't it be fun to tumble some of his chipped coral?
The first thing I thought was maybe have the Rock Shed supply tumbling rough, maybe at a reduced price, for a tumble. They have good rough and would be impartial and could get advertising from it. Not that they don't get enough advertising from us now. Entry fee buy's the rocks, pay's the prize, and helps support the forum...........................MrP

Coral or something else that would consistent to all batches sent out. I've got a 55 gal barrel of sodalite from Brazil that could be used to make some consistent lots of rough. Sodalite is too easy though. Needs to be something to challenge the contestants. Something that undercuts easily would be a challenge.
Anyway, something to think about down the road.

A World Wide tumbling contest (such as the one these folks have going on) sponsored by this forum would be quite a draw to the forum. We could smoke their little contest. Promoted on the RTH website and wherever else great minds come up with. Not just for folks here like Scott's (AWESOME) lavic tumbling contest was. Advertise the poop out of it - everywhere. Gotta be promoted bigly. Maybe even take out SMALL ads in rock magazines. Facebook the bejesus out of it. etc... Guaranteed to draw new members. I'm gonna have to start charging for these... Yup. As it gains traction, it could potentially drive more traffic to RTH. At the very least, it would create more forum engagement. Perhaps a portion of the surplus from the fundraising auctions could be budgeted for acquiring starting material. Entry fees collected would cover cost of materials, shipping, and prizes. Anything over could help pay for forum expenses. Non-cash prizes or starting material could even be sourced from forum members.

How much material do you think you would need to have for this, 100lbs, 200lbs, 300lbs? Could always get a gathering together in Ohio and go collect flint at Nether's. At 50 cents a pound, we could collect a lot of material for a pretty small price as opposed to buying it from a rock shop.

I think it would be great to get the material from members, that's why I volunteered jamesp , but it would be a lot of work and also a cost for the material. The person should be paid for material, time, and effort. I am not sure of the cost for @shotgunner with his contest but I do know it wasn't free for him. Yes he wanted to do it and I think that was great. If a member wanted to supply the material that would be fine with me but that could be a large commitment. I would like to see Tommy set it up and run it then any leftover money would be his as board owner. The other thing is the prize money could increase or have 3-4 places. Just some thoughts as I think it would be nice to have a large contest being it is a tumbling forum.
On another not there could be a cabbing wrapping contest also. The entered cabs wraps could be auctioned and proceeds go to a charity or some other good cause. Just a thought so don't shoot me!...........................MrP

ChicagoDave You have a much nicer variety of colors than what came in my batch. About 90% of mine are nothing but cream and tan colored, I don't have the reds and purples that you got. I have noticed that if they come out rounded but have a pitted, rough feel, they will just continue to grind away and never polish. It's like you can never get the those pits out no matter how much you tumble them or what grit you use. Jake

Now if you could just set aside the variability of the stones, and the photog equipment and skills o the participant, maybe then you could actually judge the entrant on their tumbling prowess.

My little contest consumed about 90# material.
I love the concept. Can't offer help due to personal obligations

On further thought. A sponsored materials tumbling contest could happen every month. But for rotary folks to participate the materials simply must be made available 6 months in advance. My original goal when I started the contest was to beat the world contest from that club in all metrics. But, job got in the way and I lost vision. I hope someone takes the reins and accomplishes that goal. I even offer to help with ideas and concepts. No charge but to see whomever succeed. I love this website. I have huge respect for everyone here (oncluding you too captbob!) and want Tommy to have a huge success. I'm concerned a name change may be needed. The website already encompasses all lapidary but many many folks don't look due to the name. I know this because internet active lapidary at our club told me so.

And thanks for schooling on Tiger Iron versus banded ironstone. I was totally unaware! I'm going to see about buying a ton of tiger iron.

A ton of tiger iron? That would be pretty sweet. Gonna be over 10k I'd guess if you can find quality material in that amount.
rockman69 on eBay may have a good source. Think his name is Chris / Christopher (?) Been quite awhile since I dealt with him off eBay.
There is a better source (I feel) in Texas. Has (had) tiger iron, rosetta and others in impressive bulk amounts. Been YEARS since I bought from him. His info is on my old computer. Will see if I can hook that up and if I can locate his contact info.

Lots of deep voids, especially right in the red/purple areas. My tan rocks are much nicer.

The contest is a fund raiser for the club. It's a $30 box of rocks with the chance to win up to $250. The lady who contacted me when I won last year said that they lost money on the contest last year, but they're going to try to keep it going if they can. If they lose money this year something is very wrong with their (volunteer) process. I could drive up to Hayden hill tomorrow and fill my truck - this crap material is laying everywhere near the road in. You get club members over for lunch to break up rocks and put in boxes - MFRB shipping? All you'd need is 16 entries to break even. What am I missing? There is $400 in prize money, cost of the trophy and they advertise in Rock and Gem magazine every month...maybe that had something to do with losing money.

Unless we can buy 10 tons. Lol
